Joseph Michael Jurevicius
(born December 23, 1974 in Cleveland, Ohio) wide receiver for the NFL Cleveland
Browns. He was originally drafted in the second round of the 1998 NFL Draft by
the New York Giants out of Pennsylvania State University. He has also played for
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks.
High
School Years
Joe Jurevicius attended Mentor Lake
Catholic High School in Mentor, Ohio, and was a letterman in football as a wide
receiver/punter and in basketball.
Career
Joe Jurevicius played for 4 seasons
with the New York Giants (1998-02). For his career in NY he played in 58 games,
scored 5 touchdowns and got 1,442 receiving yards he also had only 2 fumbles as
well. In Super Bowl XXXV he did not record a reception even though he played in
the game.
After his contract was up he signed
with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a unrestricted free agent in 2002. In Super
Bowl XXXVII he caught 4 passes for 78 yards for the Super Bowl champion
Buccaneers. He finished his injury-shortened career there with 8 touchdowns and
874 receiving yards in 30 games played.
In 2005 he signed with the Seattle
Seahawks as an unrestricted free agent. 2005 would prove to be his best year yet
in the NFL. He finished the regular season with a career high 10 touchdowns with
694 receiving yards, his best since his 706 yard year in 2001. He also had a
career high two 137 yard games, against St. Louis Rams and his former team the
New York Giants. He capped off his best season when he led the Seahawks in
receiving with 5 catches for 93 yards in Super Bowl XL.
On March 11, 2006, Jurevicius signed
a four year contract with the Cleveland Browns, his hometown team and a team he
claimed he has always wanted to play for.
Personal
Jurevicius lives in Chardon, Ohio
with his wife, Meagan, and daughter. His only son, Michael William Jurevicius,
died on March 24, 2003 from sialidosis, a neurodegenerative disease. Since his
son's early passing he has been a strong support of the March of Dimes programs
and will dedicate his touchdowns to his son by either pointing up to the sky, or
throwing the ball into the air(a celebration called "The Heavens"). A
scholarship has been made in his son's name. The inaugural winner of the newly
founded scholarship was Nicholas Cipkus.
He has a tattoo of Vytis, the
national symbol of Lithuania on his right biceps. He is of Lithuanian descent.
He earned a degree in Human
Development and Family Studies from Penn State University in 1997.
