Browns place second-round tender on Matt Roth

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 4, 2010 8:14 AM ET

Matt Roth had an interesting 2009, starting the year on the physically unable to perform list, getting waived by the Dolphins after a falling out with the team, and then getting claimed by the Browns and playing very well, starting the final six games of the season and recording four sacks.

The Browns were pleased enough with Roth that they've tendered him at the second-round level.

Roth is a 6-foot-4, 275-pound outside linebacker who looked very good in the Browns' defense late last year and played a significant role in Cleveland's late-season improvement. It makes sense for Cleveland to want to keep him.

And if another team signs him to an offer sheet and the Browns decline to match it, they'd get a second-round draft pick. Either way, it's not bad for a guy they picked up for free off waivers.

Good. Good.

I think its great. Either we hold onto a guy with 2nd round draft pick potential, or we get a shiney new 2nd rounder.

Does anybody know if today is the deadline to tender players? I'm really interested in seeing what happens with D'Qwell and Harrison.

Yes all players should be offered their tender. I believe dqwell is getting a second round tender and Harrison im not sure of, have heard rumors of a first or rumors of a second. It wouldnt kill me to see dqwell go at all. i know he was upset that he didnt get a first round tender but i feel that he is only worth the second round tender and this is a good move for the browns. no more overpaying for players who arent worth it by this regime, i like it a lot. i would be really estatic to get a second rounder in return for dqwell or would be happy to sign him for what hes really worth. Excellent move and love the roth move as well. If i had to pick from the two i would much rather have roth!

Thanks for the info.

At first I thought you were a little off about taking Roth over Jackson but, he is a little younger and he had 4 sacks in 6 games. That's something we have relly been lacking here since 99'; pass rush. And in this league, the only way to get an advantage over an offense is to get pressure on the QB.

I think Jackson is going to be interesting. I like him and i think he is a quality inside linebacker. But i dont think that he is anything super great and not replaceable. My opinion is that he is closer to an average inside linebacker in a 3 - 4 scheme than he is a very good one. I think that if we were too lose him i think that it wouldnt be as hard to find someone to replace him that could do as good of a job if not better. I dont really think he is worth any kind of a big contract and after hearing him complain about only being offered a second round tender it seems to be a little scary and that he himself thinks he is worth a lot more than he really is. He reminds me the way he plays a lot like another inside lindebacker that we had here who made a lot of tackles whom i think that we as browns fans somewhat overvalued at the time but very similarly made a lot of down field tackles and not at the point of attack around the line of scrimmage tackles. A Mr. Wali Rainer.

As far as roth goes. I love what he brings to the table. Like you said he helps bring something that we have lacked here for quite some time. a resemblance of a pass rush. 4 sacks in six games is huge. ecspecially when you consider he was hurt earliar in the year and how quickly he adapted to being here in cleveland. Add to the fact that he got to the quarterback a lot causing pressure and hits on the qb which we havent seen a lot of either. I believe he fits the mold for what we are looking for in our players. He brings with him a little bit of a nasty attitude that goes back to his days of college for the iowa hawkeyes. A relentless motor and an intenseness and with how quick he adapted to things in cleveland a very coachable player. He is a sure tackler. When he gets those big mitts on somebody forget it. At 6'4 275lbs. he has great size to play the run and he is no stranger to get to the point of attack against the run unlike somebody else on the browns cough, cough, Kam Wimbley. Just a complete Outside linebacker and perfect fit for the 3 -4 scheme being ran. Whats not to like good pass rusher, Big body plays the run well, solid speed for his size, intense high motor, sure tackler, physical, brings a little nastiness. On top of this the even better part is he is just coming into his prime. Very excited to have him on board i hope we are willing to match very highly if anyone really comes after him to keep him in cleveland but i dont feel it will be a problem.

I definitely want Roth with the Browns. Our chances of getting a 2nd rounder to equal what he showed are slim, but a 2nd round pick wouldn't be awful, at least we would get value. That being said, I much prefer keeping him over getting the pick.

Now, DQ is a different story. He figures to be a pretty high tender & I WOULD take the pick over signing him. Yes, he (before the injury) led the team in tackles, but most were the "chase 'em down" type. Very few sacks & tackles for loss. He's a decent "pursuit type" LB who is somewhat overvalued (just MY opinion) & worth more to us being signed elsewhere with a high tender or maybe being traded. I honestly feel his value is at a peak....sort of like when Anderson filed for Free Agency & Howdy Doody re-signed him. We should have let him go & I feel the same about DQ.

These are just my opinions, but we'll see what the REAL experts decide.

you mean Savage? i don't remember. probably a lot though.

If memory serves me correctly, I believe Savage traded Jeff Faine to the Saints to move up to get DQ...after luring Bentley away from them in FA.
