2015 O-line Grades: Week 6 Broncos

There were 16 series with 6 in the 1st half, 9 in the 2nd half and 1 in OT.

There were 34 first-half, 43 second-half (including the one-play, final kneel down) and 3 OT plays for a total of 80 graded plays.

Note: Graded plays include plays negated, but unaffected, by penalty.

Weekly Run Direction...

Here are our game 2 results from WideLeft to WideRight:

WL-6 / L-1 / M-16 / R-3 / WR-0

Last week's interest in the right was replaced with a probing of the Wide-Left. The Middle remains our busiest run target.

The Grades

Small solace, but overall Week 6 may have been our best overall effort of the year. Individual "wins" were common, especially by our OTs, but coordination "fails" were too common, especially by our interior three and especially in their PassPro. Run coordination at times flashed at a very high level perhaps confirming last week's observation.

And the surprises just keep on coming... This week featured an increase in the use of the power running game. In all we ran 8 trap plays with pulling by: Bito 4, Greco 2, and Barn 2.

Joe Thomas: 1st +15-9 net +6 w/ 4D+&2D-; 2nd +18-3 net +15 w/ 3D+&1D-; OT +0-0 net 0

Game Totals: +33-12 net +21

Joe posted another solid game. Defenders who are pass-rushing Joe's end of the line often look as if they are already defeated at the snap. This earns Joe a lot of cheap points when a half-hearted attempt is made, but this costs him even more points when the effort put before him is token at best. Every once in a while, however, the test is serious. This week only the combination move of a hard speed rush followed by a quick spin once the rusher is deeper than the QB seemed to give Joe trouble. Even then it took a Von Miller level athlete to pull off a win with that combo.

Joe's three D-'s came for: losing his backside seal block to a zone run away from him to a defender's spin move (S1P2); a perplexing, half-assed effort to fill the hole left by Bito after he pulled (S3P5); and not selecting the nearest defender, a DE, to seal from pursuing a middle zone run (S7P3). Clearly run blocking was the source of JT's biggest negatives. Joe did get away with a False Start and a couple holds this week.

Joe's seven D+'s for the week included: a key, POA, 2nd-level block... LBs don't like to see JT coming (S2P1); handling an early, concerted, speed-rush attempt (S2P5) and again (S4P3); crashing inside on a rusher attempting to split he and Bito, and still able to recover outside to a looping ILB (S5P4); stoning a bull-rush/spin combo (S7P4); a second, strong, 2nd-level, POA block on a Z-run his way (S11P1); and extra sweet chip+2nd-level effort (S11P4); and lastly...

One last, gorgeous, 2nd-level, POA block on a Z-run his way when Joe actually locked onto the LB's breast plate firmly enough to lift the LB off of the ground... let me repeat... off of the ground (S13P2). Never before have I seen that. Joe be strong...

Joel Bitonio: 1st +23-4 net +19 w/ 5D+&1D-; 2nd +24-8 net +16 w/ 4D+&1D-; OT +2-0 net +2

Game Totals: +49-12 net +37

How do you follow a +44 gross? With a +49 apparently... and where he upped his gross by 5, he upped his net by 6. Another awesome display of interior line play. Last week I wondered aloud if Joel had been inspired by Joe. This week I saw nothing to dispute that. Now what I wonder is whether Bito is passing that inspiration to his right.

Bito posted two D-'s were for being driven into what had been a hole in a middle Z-run (S4P1) and a weak chip with no 2nd-level block on a later ZM run (S11P4).

Joel slacked off a bit this week earning only 9 D+'s vs. last week's 10... pffft... hope Payroll docked him. Here they are: strong chip and POA 2nd-level (S1P2); defeating Von at end of pull to the right (S2P3); reverse seal at POA on toss-middle Z-run (S3P2); pick-up of a looping rusher (S4P3); stoning a bull-rushing DE (S6P3); X-block p/u (S7P9); a driving POA block (S11P6); stoning a bull-spin rush combo (S11P8); and coming off a PassPro dbl to p/u and blitz (S12P3).

Alex Mack: 1st +12-7 net +5 w/ 1D+&2D-; 2nd +17-12 net +5 w/ 3D+&5D-; OT +1-2 net -1 w/ 1D-

Game Totals: +30-21 net +9

For the first time this season we saw much more good than bad this week. That is not to say there was not "bad"... as 7 D-'s attest, there was. And it was not only the number, but their timing. Nonetheless I came away on balance feeling positive about Alex's trajectory for the first time this season. It is possible that he is building up, physically and mentally, and not wearing down.

Here are this week's D's: blown back from line allowing penetration disrupting a Barnidge pull (S3P7); reached for 2 separate blocks and making neither for a sack (S3P9); somehow ended up outside of Mitch on a middle run (S8P2); could not move DL assignment in Z-middle run (S11P4); failed to anchor allowing disruptive penetration on ZR-left (S11P6); beaten across face to throw trap run for loss (S12P1); weak chip and whiff at 2nd level on Z-middle run (S13P5); and in OT, missed p/u of X-rush looper for sack (S16P2).

Alex's garnered 4 D+'s this week. Here they are: turned and cleared NT from path of middle toss (S4P1); very nice chip+2nd level effort (S7P5) and again (S11P1); and a nice p/u of a delayed blitz (S13P10).

His chip+2nd execution is where Alex made his points pre-injury last season. It's good to see them popping up again.

John Greco: 1st +13-5 net +8; 2nd +20-10 net +10 w/ 2D+&1D-; OT +1-0 net +1

Game Totals: +33-15 net +18

A much more consistent game from John this week and one of his busiest to date with season highs in both positives and negatives on his card.

John's lone D- came for inexplicably chasing a defender looping away from him leaving a gap another defender exploited for a McC knock-down.

Both Greco's D+'s came after half-time. The first was for turning a strong bull rush and escorting it harmlessly by the play (S11P7). His second came for picking up an X-looping defender.

It's interesting the pattern of fewer D grades, positive or negative, on our right side vs. the left. It may be as simple as talent levels, but it may be something else such as design, ours or our opposition's...

Mitchell Schwartz: 1st +14-2 net +12 w/ 1D-; 2nd +19-7 net +12 w/ 1D+; OT +1-1 net 0

Game Totals: +34-10 net +24

One D+ for handling an all-out speed-rush by Von on our last play of regulation (S14P3).

One D- for failing to seal off an LB on a Z-middle run (S3P1).

It would seem that life is easy grading Mitch... but in fact it's not. So few D's mean more singles meaning more graded plays... 42 for Mitch this week. That's more than Greco's 35... more than Mack's 39... more than Thomas' 35. Only Bito's 50 plays exceeded Mitch's number.

I'll also point out that Mitch's -10 was the week's lowest negative gross. Keep up the good work Mitch.

Cam Erving: Game Totals: +0-0 net 0

Thought I saw him in once, but did not note it. I was probably distracted by a squirrel... or a pigeon.

Other Blockers:

TEs: Housler shows up... a D+ and a catch in the same game?

  • Barn: +4-14 net -10 w/ 4D- You can't be good at everything... D-'s for: Blown back into Bito's pulling path (S2P8); POA failure (S3P4); discarded blocking for Z-middle run (S9P1); and whiff at end of pull (S10P1).
  • Dray: +7-3 net +4 w/ 3D+&1D- Strong, best of season showing for Jim. D+'s for: getting 2 on Z-right including TJ (S7P5); making POA block on TJ (S11P4); and inviting and then taking Von out of delayed run (S13P1). D- for getting shucked during run his way (S11P6).
  • Housler: No activity noted.
RBs: FB Boom or Bust week...
  • M. Johnson: +12-15 net -3 w/ 5D+&7D- Higher high and lower lows this week from MJ. He's just so damn inconsistent. D+'s for: strong ILB blocks at Z-middle POA (S1P1) and (S7P2); cut OLB and tripped bonus DE on Z-wide left (S2P1); and nice block with a bit of a hold at end leading Duke on delay (S13P1). D-'s for: not moving LB out of hole (S2P3)(S9P1)(S12P1); ran past LB in hole (S8P2); weak chip and nothing (S11P1); bad fundamentals (position, etc.) on lead block wide (S13P2) and whiffed a cut block (S16P1).
  • Crow: +5-0 net +5 w/2D+ both for blitz p/u's while subbing for Duke late (S14P1) and (S14P3).
  • Duke: +2-4 net -2 w/2D- Run over by LB on his way to sack (S3P9) and his False Start (S5P4).
  • Turbin: +0-0 net 0 Maybe this week we'll see him block.
  • Draughn: +0-0 net 0 He gone... good luck.
WRs: Little this week at third level...
  • Gabe: +2-1 net +1 w/ 1D+ LittleBigBlock made a nice one on (S2P1).
  • Benji: +1-3 net -2 w/ 1D- Got away with a lil' hold at the end of his + play. Hit the ground only on a cut for the -. D- for a False Start.
  • Hart: +0-1 net -1
  • Hawk: +0-1 net -1
  • Bowe: Looking like he's had his point for the year...
General Notes:

1. Our run game

I do not know what to say about Malcolm Johnson. He simply cannot root defenders out of holes. Success for him is a draw. I think we need to look elsewhere for our FB... or stay single-back and roll with that.

Here's an example (S2P3):

post-2853-0-41237000-1445562770_thumb.jpgpost-2853-0-58761600-1445562781_thumb.jpgpost-2853-0-67732700-1445562791_thumb.jpgpost-2853-0-10735800-1445562803_thumb.jpg

Flip... no Pistol... attaboy.

2. Our RB CorpsP3)

Talk about impressions being off... never would have thought Turbin would have the lowest YPC for the game. We are going to see a lot of him vs. StL... possibly with Crow moved to the Duke role given Duke's shoulder.

3. Pass Blocking

I wrote last week that I was optimistic that our OTs would match up well vs. their OLB rushers and they did. I wrote that I was concerned about pressure up the middle and there was. But it was as much due to Wade Phillips' scheme as it was any physical mismatches, which were the primary basis of my concern... and that troubles me.

4. Play action

New wrinkle this week with a couple quick-pass fakes feeding delayed runs.

5. Hot reads

Clearly missed one big one that resulted in a sack-fumble. Not sure who missed what... who, if anyone, released when they should not have... but MJ ended up short

6. Snap Counts

Got us a big, free play with one bark... a free five with another, but caught one of our own fish, Duke, with a third.

7. Prettiest new to me play

The fake pass, delayed run is my top pick, but there were a couple others to choose from.

8. Personnel

Yup... apparently a TE presence on the field is mandatory... but...

10. Fun with Three TEs...

... only went 3TEs once this week (S3P8).

11. Shifty Flippy

Did not see the mass shift this week, but did see one double-shift done in stages (S5P2).

Revelation(s) of the week:

We have sight adjustments. Saw two this week... both were quick slants to Benji (S8P1) and (S13P4). One was particularly telltale as Crow did not know what to do when not handed the ball. Chemistry between McC and Benji is pretty good.

Rant of the week: Seven, and only seven, men on the line, please

The subject of last week's rant, our pre-snap alignment, was a non-issue... but based upon what I saw, it could have been. The cleanup was noticeable, but there were still times when we were blurring the line.

This week I have a fresh, big rant, but it is about our pass D... specifically our pass rush scheme... or lack of one. And there's a thread for that... or there will be.

But I also have a small rant about Benji. He has to toughen up... not a lot, but he needs to a little. I don't mind a touch of gator arms over the middle or getting down fast on slants. I'd rather have him in one piece for the next play. A little has to do with blocking, where he needs to target thighs, not ankles. Mostly it has to do with punt returns... specifically one he cut a bit short in a tight game this past Sunday.

It was a good return across the field...

post-2853-0-51912100-1445563526_thumb.jpg

It included a nice dip up field to set up the corner...

post-2853-0-10078200-1445563543_thumb.jpgpost-2853-0-45010400-1445563563_thumb.jpg

And a beautiful sprint to a decision point...

post-2853-0-13108800-1445563576_thumb.jpg

The cut back into the field is there... I've no idea if it pops, but in a game like this it has to be given a chance.

Instead...

post-2853-0-89684300-1445563589_thumb.jpg

Next time, Benji... give it a shot.

Weekly Special Request:

I've started recording the weekly scores and as a leveler I am dividing the net by the number of graded plays.

Our, or at least my, leader through Week 6 in all aspects of positive points is young Joel B. Joe T has the fewest negative points.

post-2853-0-88843000-1445565827_thumb.jpg

Reminder: I do take requests. If what you are interested in interests me and/or is not a major time commitment, I may well do it.

Go Browns...

Certainly FB is not a point of emphasis. Sad part is MJ probably had his best game. Sadder still... MJ is the best FB we've had in two seasons and counting. I really want to see Bibbs as HB/FB.

First play Mack made a nice seal block. Got a plus as did the entire OL except JT who got a "?" for going to 3rd level for reasons unknown. The play was blown up when MJ whiffed his lead block.

Second play of OT, the first sack, was on Mack when he missed a looping rusher.

Last play was on McC. Don't know why he ran up and out of pocket. Mack was part of double team. Middle was solid. Edges were pressed, but holding firm. LBs were waiting for flush and McC obliged them.

So in OT Mack was: +1-2 net -1 w/ 1D-

Just crossed my mind that if DNV was in man coverage, then they might have been suckering McC into taking off.

If someone has the all-22 look, then please take a look at this.

I'd be interested to see:

- how often our backs bounce to the outside when the play is designed to go up the middle

- how much yardage is gained on inside/outside/bounced runs (and also probably screens to RBs).

I see we're running up the middle a lot, but wondering where our yardage comes from. If we're averaging 4+ YPC up the middle, that's pretty good and a run game we can lean on, but if we're getting stuck less than 2 YPC up the middle, while gaining 5-6 YPC outside, it's not something we can use to see out games, we can't just hand the ball off to a closer (like Lynch) and run the clock - as we saw at the end of regulation, with 1st and 10 from the 11, we gained 4 yards on three plays. A good OL and closing back will get us in the end zone there.

Good ball talk Tour.. Good to see Mack coming on. Saw 1 bad play that lead to a sack but that was it. Like his matchup with Brocker this week but got to help on Donald & Quinn. You answered my ??'s on M. Johnson & if Bibbs wants to see the field a think he sees it too & hope to see some boys getting Blown Up by a Bibb. Really thought we blew our opportunity to run Left but we at least tried. Wade was out. His Sub got hurt. Shane Ray got hurt. All stayed Out & missed a Golden Egg running that way. Instead I thought we laid a egg. Damn it...

Something that's maybe gone unnoticed - the schwartz is apparently the ##1 ranked RT per PFF.

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2015/10/mitchell_schwartz_earns_rave_r.html

Pro Football Focus, which rates players based on their performance in games and over the course of the season, has Schwartz as the highest-graded right tackle in the NFL this season and the sixth-highest graded tackle overall in the league.

Mud mentioned the top RT thing last week. JT was top LT and #1 overall OT. I would assume he still is.

And the bidding for Mitch starts at ??? $6mm/yr???

I'd be interested to see:

- how much yardage is gained on inside/outside/bounced runs (and also probably screens to RBs).

Thats' doable... I normally note bounces and always note gains. Will be sure to note bounces starting next week, but will also look back at first six weeks. Certainly can calc YPC in each of the directions I count.

I can't recall a single bounce this past week.

Saw more sustained double teams that appeared to be by design in the middle this past week than I can recall. Much more used to seeing the play-side OL slip off to the 2nd level once the off OL gains leverage. The good news was the sustained doubles controlled the NT. The bad news was more often than not Denver's LBs filled very well.

I'd like to see Bibbs (or Dray) filling the trap role that's fallen to Barn. Barn pulled off one pull, but simply isn't reliable in that role.

Barrett, Denver's other OLB, played very well... outplayed Ray for sure and even Miller to my eye.

Bito for sure... faster and more athletic. And to use that ability some of his pulls are up, into the hole rather than across to open the hole.

But John can get it done. He nailed both his pulls this week.

Let me guess... you saw him make three bad plays this week?

He has had 8 penalties in 7 game which puts him in the conversation for most penalized OL in the NFL. He got steamrolled on one play. Tour not saying your work is inaccurate just that an offensive line is more than individual grades. Often times if one guy breaks down the whole thing goes bad. And that based on watching the games the OL has struggled this year but according to PFF you'd think they were the 94 Cowboys. I don't see our OL imposing their will on anyone and that may be due to the zone blocking theme but to say this unit is the sum of its parts, namely three All-Pro players, seems to be a stretch.

Tour better roast these guys this week. They're an embarrassement. Some of this is on McCown, the fucker holds the ball foreve which as a Browns QB...I mean the history is just there for everyone to see....you don't hold the ball in Cleveland. You don't do it. But some of these kill shots that happen about 1.5 seconds after the ball is snapped ain't on him. Our o line has problems. And that's before we talk about the penalties today. These cunts I swear to god, what's gonna happen in Seattle if they couldn't handle the relatively muted Rams crowd? We'll set NFL records

Actually you were blaming one guy... If you've read any thing I've written outside of the individual grades, you know I've been saying this "unit" has been far less the sum of its parts.

I'll grade them play-by-play, position-by-position like I have been. We'll see what comes out.

Will include some RG data on Cam.

If I still have a stop watch around here, I may put it to use this week as well.
