Russia, America's New Frenemy

So for those of you that think the USA and Russia getting cozy is a good idea (someone here asked me why I thought better relations with Russia was a bad thing, don't remember which thread), please note the following. In the past week...

But wait a minute, I thought Trump and Putin were buddies? They say such wonderful things about each other:

Trump on Putin

Putin on Trump

Trump is right about one thing, Putin is outsmarting the US right now, precisely because he's playing Trump for a fool. Putin's praise for Trump is not admiration, it's a calculated strategy based on Putin's understanding of Trump's personality. Trump craves admiration and attention, so he gives it to him, and he'll keep giving it to him until he's got Trump wrapped around his finger.

Putin's already got Trump disrespecting NATO because it isn't "taking care of terror." At the same time, he's saying he wants to lift sanctions on Russia.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/15/world/europe/donald-trump-nato.html?_r=0

Russia has never gotten over being outsmarted and broken by Reagan. Putin wants to restore the Soviet Union:

According to Vladimir Bukovsky, a dissident who spent a decade in Soviet prisons before his exile to the West in 1976, Putin is totally genuine when he says the disintegration of the Soviet Union was a "geopolitical catastrophe".

"He does not understand that the collapse of the Soviet system was predetermined, therefore he believes his mission is to restore the Soviet system as soon as possible," he says.

Russia is planning on major expansion and redeployment to it's forces in 2017 on it's borders with Europe.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/russia-vladimir-putin-military-expansion-reinforcements-europe-a7491276.html

Let's put it all together.:

- Putin, who wants to restore the USSR, comes into power in 1999.

- Using 'War on Terror' after 9/11 as a pretext, he invades and eventually annexes Georgia and Crimea.

- Putin encourages friction between Trump and NATO, with Trump criticizing NATO for not doing enough about terrorism. Trump talks about lifting sanctions imposed on Russia for annexing Crimea.

- Trump's immigration ban sneaks in language that can get America drawn into the war in Syria, making our military further committed elsewhere around the globe.

- Who benefits? Russia. The more NATO can be focused on terrorism, the less it can be focused on what Russia is doing. Russia wants nothing more than for the US, Europe and NATO to be singularly focused (distracted) by the threats posed by terrorists who in reality do not pose an existential threat to any nation outside of the Middle East.

- Missiles have already been redeployed in violation of the 1987 treaty.

- With the Western powers distracted, Russia will redeploy forces as mentioned in the link above.

Appropriately aggressive responses to this will not come from a terrorism-obsessed US administration that seems to admire Russia and has been talking with them even before they came into power. A terrorism-obsessed US populace will not put any pressure on this administration to counter Russian maneuvers.

Say hello to the Soviet Union 2.0.

So, WSS or forum admin, I happened to click on a few of Cal's posts. They aren't on thread topic at all. Can the ones that are not be deleted? I truly and honestly would like to have a discussion with people on this board about Russia and it's maneuverings to rebuild the USSR.

It's pretty clear he's just trying to derail the thread by cluttering it with off-topic stuff.

not off topic at all. You are goading about terrible Trump wanting to be

friendly with Russia, and you ignore, ignorantly/dishonestly about the

lack of respect Russian has for us, over the trashheap of obamao/higgardly

disasters the last eight years. It's right on subject - who is responsible

for Russia not respecting us, and why it's bad to trust them.

Whining sombeitch. You bragged about goading me, but you can't take goading.

I suppose because you're a Muslim, you get to decide you get to goad, but

nobody else does. Hypocrite whiner.

The re-set button was kind of silly gimmick though from Clinton.

I would think about all administrations would try to have improved relations with Russia. It would be in our best interest. I remember Obama promising to Putin he would have more flexibility after he was re-elected. As long as we go into trying to improve relations with Russia with our eyes wide open and do things in our best interest why not?

If you have someone as savvy as Putin, sure. That guy isn't Trump.

Obama was savvy I will give him that. He was far more radical in his ideas and views than most people realized because of how he presented himself and his demeanor. There is something to say though for someone like Trump and a what you see is what you get person. You know where they are coming from.

Steve, without violating his privacy, is dealing with an issue at the moment. I expect he'll be away from the board for a time. We're gonna have to fend for ourselves.

true - that and he voted "present" 128 times to hide who he was... instead of "yay" or "nay".

you're completely and deliberately wrong. His highness osiris even bragged

about goading me.

And, the cartoons I posted were to the point - his highness osiris gloated

about the stupidity of Trump wanting to be friends with terrible Russia.

But, he avoids talking about higgardly wanting to be friends with terrible Russia.

Seriously, do you have a reading problem?
