Troy Smith wants to play for the Browns

Posted by Mike Florio on January 30, 2010 10:02 AM ET

Quarterback Troy Smith currently plays for the franchise that used to be the Cleveland Browns. (Cue the Browns fans either who insist that the Ravens were never the Browns or who get pissed at us for mentioning it.) Now, Smith wants to play for the franchise that currently is the Cleveland Browns.

Smith made his preferences known in a recent interview with Mark "Munch" Bishop of ESPN Radio's Cleveland affiliate.

"There is no doubt about it," Smith said regarding his desire to play for the Browns. "It has always been a childhood dream of mine. It's funny how we always talk about Cleveland. That's the first thing that comes to mind with anything I do whether I get a chance to come home and be a part of that organization or not. You know, I would love to get that chance if that opportunity comes up, but the political and right thing to say in this situation is that I would love to be anywhere that would give me a chance. But, without a doubt, there would be no second guessing in my mind if I could come back home and be a part of something that I love."

Earlier this week, Bills safety Donte Whitner lobbied, Twitter style, for Buffalo to make a play for Smith, who currently is stuck behind Joe Flacco in Baltimore.

Smith, the 2006 Heisman winner, would have opened the 2008 season as the starter in Baltimore, but for a case of tonsilitis that gave Flacco a chance to take snaps as a rookie.

I'm in no way endorsing a move for smith, nor am I opposing it. Just thought it was interresting that he would make this comment geared toward the browns.

Not for nothing, but Joe Flacco didn't look like he took a step forward in 2009. I'd LOVE for us to get Troy Smith here at garage sale prices to upgrade the competition at QB while we're prolly gonna draft 1 or 2 kids as well. TRUST ME when I tell you we have nothing to lose by bringing him in to upgrade the position.

I looked at the list of former Heisman QBs we reviewed. 3 of them, Vinny, Plunkett and Flutie all required 2nd chances away from the teams that drafted them. Smith's arm didn't fall off nor did he wake up a crappy athlete one morning. He's just awaiting the SAME opportunity other guys did. Joe Theismann was a runner-up that also required Canada before he would be allowed to retunr punts in Washington.

SOMETIMES good Qbs don't fit the pototypical crib sheets. Anyone ever hear of Brian Sipe or Drew Brees? Well, we spent so much time on the prototypical Mike Phipps that we were too petrified to think what putting a 13th round kid like Sipe in would do. Let's not forget, he was NOT starting, he was too short, he wasn't fast and experts said the alleged weak arm wasn't right for Lake Erie weather. Well, I've got 3 consecutive seasons where he averaged over 4000 yards passing back when that was unheard of as well as 1 MVP season telling me premature conclusions suck!

I just don't see the Ravens willing to trade the guy to us at bargain bin price. Why??

I was never all that high on the guy myself, but people change and grow.

I wouldn't want to give up anything more than a 7th rounder for the guy.....ok....maybe 6th.

Any higher and you might as well draft a qb in that round and you probably have as good a shot the guy will work out and be fairly decent.

Why not just give them the Derek Anderson we've heard they missed so much? Wasn't he a 6th or 7th rounder? Troy wants out because he's NOT in their plans which seems to be the equivalent of DA here.

They wouldn't do that. DA has a much larger contract.

And to be honest, I think DA is better. But, if we did that and they did that, I wouldn't run around flailing my arms in the air screaming the sky is falling.

I just don't think that is a realistic option.

That's real sweet that guys like Troy Smith, Brady Quinn and Charlie Frye want to play for the Browns, if nothing else our franchise fulfills the childhood dreams of mediocre QBs from Ohio.

Can't wait until players want to play for the Browns because they want to win championships.

Easy Penn Stater, Smith isn't a bad QB. Matter of fact, he has the potential to be pretty good. He was the QB in Bmore until he got sick and they anointed Flacco seagulls.

I wouldn't dismiss him just yet, but wouldn't break the bank for him or anything.

I would do a Stuckey and 6th for him, they need a wr and this years draft is deep, we are going to get some kinda draft pick if we try and trade BQ anyway, so it would end up being and wash and we can move on from the DA vs BQ fued. Then we wont have to draft more than 1 qb this year. Get Levour or Pike in the 3rd.

Smith isn't a bad QB.

He's a 6th round draft pick that has 2 NFL starts and 53% completion percentage.

You say he's not bad, what proof do you have that he is any good?

What is it with you and mediocre homeboys? Let's go out and get a real QB. Pittsburgh found theirs in Ohio ... think they give a shit that he's from Ohio?

I don't care if our next QB was born in Madagascar, Key West or the banks of the Monongahela ... let's just make sure he is a real QB who is accurate, tough and a real playmaker.

Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cinncy have those guys ... how do we expect to compete without one?

Screw Quinn. Screw Smith.

Get Don McNabb and draft Colt McCoy. A Chicago homie and a Texas redneck ... and let's hire local guys for the grounds crew, marketing and the training staff.

Umm, that's actually my favorite plan. I'm just saying that Smith can be a player in this league and he is an option. I'm not sitting around here pining for nothing to get done just so homeboy Queen starts for another year. I want to be proactive, but Smith may be our only option down the line besides the draft.

At that point, we better hope he is better than you think he is. All the guy ever did to Penn State was kick the living shit out of them, so I'm not sure how you think he's no good. You know damn well his draft stock plummeted from the Florida game and his subsequent dbag behavior before the draft. Combine that with his height and weight from the banquet circuit and there you have it. Bottom line is he was better than Flacco last year but deathly ill, lost a shitload of weight and strength and Flaxseed took over.

I would bet right now if they had a fair competition in Bmore this year Smith would beat Flaxico out, but it will never happen. Flacco is the anointed one there being a first rounder. He played just well enough to render not giving Troymont a chance, hence he could still be very viable somewhere else.

We're not ALL going to agree on Troy Smith here. I think I'm almost beginning to understand why Loverboy used to put on his Lancelot Armor for his college hero. He certainly wanted us to see what he saw. I'll try not to be as abrasive and I know I'm not nearly as funny.

IMO, it's always been possible for guys like Steve Young, Vinny Testaverde, Joe Theismann, Kurt Warner, Warren Moon, Jim Plunkett, Rich Gannon, Jeff Garcia, Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck, Doug Flutie, Matt Schaub, Jim Harbaugh, Fran Tarkenton, and others to have much better luck on their 2nd/3rd pro team than their first. It usually has to start with being on an NFL payroll somewhere for that to be possible.

Worth noting: Terry Bradshaw and Dan Fouts weren't even completing 50% of their passes in their first 3 years or so. Joe Namath was a 50% completion guy lifetime. Which one of those guys didn't make the Hall of Fame?

Since I've witnessed countless success stories of QBs drafted between round 3 and 6 and others that needed a 2nd chnce elsewhere - I think it could be pertinent to Troy Smith. As I've said earlier in this thread, my favorite Browns' QB was Brian Sipe who was drafted in round 13. Rumor had it he wasn't nearly as prototypical as Mike Phipps, whom we selected in the 3rd slot of round 1 (requiring us to give away Paul Warfield in the process). I think we all learned how that one turned out.

Last but not least, if a guy like Mike Tomczak can start for 2 different NFL playoff teams in 2 different conferences - I'm pretty sure Troy Smith can experience some success in the right environment. He's got a WAY better arm and I don't remember feeling like I wanted to choke Troy Smith every other play at Ohio State quite the way Tomczak made me feel. If he's as bad as many accuse him of being - then Baltimore has ZERO problem parting with him in their own division right? That's how we got Dumb Ass; and they might have even thrown in a large screen TV for all we know. When Cinderfella encountered that early midnight in 2007, he lost more accuracy on his throw than Ricky Ankiel. And that ain't good if you're posing as an NFL QB.

The ravens would NOT trade him for Anderson.........if we gave them Quinn and a fourth they may go for it. They understand Troy can play too bad too many do not

he got drafted low for two reasons one bad game the last........and he is short........same height as Drew Brees..........which makes the short thing obe now

Oh ... the old "he was good in college" argument. So was Brady Quinn. Didn't John David Booty kick the living shit out of OSU? The list of college QBs that were great in college and nobody in the pros is as long as my dick. Major Applewhite and Josh Hueppel won some big games ... how come no one gave them a chance as starters in the NFL?

You know damn well his draft stock plummeted from the Florida game and his subsequent dbag behavior before the draft. Combine that with his height and weight from the banquet circuit and there you have it.

Let me get this straight ... you are arguing for Smith? By pointing out that he tanked his biggest game, is short and has character issues? Hate to hear his bad points ... can't believe this guy isn't starting somewhere!

Bottom line is he was better than Flacco last year but deathly ill, lost a shitload of weight and strength and Flaxseed took over.

LOL! Flacco is a 6'6 laser-armed first round pick that has thrown for over 6,500 yards and 35 TD passes in two seasons , is 20-12 as a starter, and has won three playoff games at age 25. Yes, I'm sure Troy would be all that and more if he just got a chance

A three-inch list? The font must be really small, to fit all those names on it.

I'm kidding. I am sure you're hung like [insert any porn star's name here that suits you].

If he can learn to run on stilts, he can come. It is nice to hear someone actually wants to come to the Browns and play though, especially considering how piss poor we have been.

when you say someone in the media you mean: some. one. i write better tribble in my dreams. troy smith? no.

I am one who actually think Troy Smith could be a good NFL QB, and wouldn't mind giving him a shot in Cleveland, if say the Ravens would let him go for a 3rd rounder. Although I doubt the Ravens would trade him to us regardless.
