Super Bowl (mostly) trivia

This isn't the answer to the question, nor a hint. Information only. But in the pre-Super Bowl era there were several championships involving two cities that were closer together than any 2 teams that have ever met in a Super Bowl. And those were the several NFL title games contested between the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions, which cities, per my AAA Atlas US Mileage table are only 168 miles apart.

As long as I am on it, I will give you the answer to this question, since Zombo got it anyway:

The closest rivals in a Super Bowl was that between the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts, which are 178 miles apart.

After the Cleve./Detroit and Chi/Indy matchup, the next closest geographic rivals to meet were the Cleveland Browns and the Buffalo Bills in the 1948 AAFC title game. Those cities are 190 miles apart.

After that came the Baltimore/New York game in SB III. FYI, Baltimore is closer to NYC than Boston is. (Boston is 216 miles away). Closer yet is NYC and Philadelphia, only 97 miles apart, but teams from those 2 cities have never met in a title game.

Finally, the next closest appears to be the 1962 AFL title game between the Dallas Texans and Houston Oilers, which cities are 239 miles apart.

Here is a set of trivia questions for you to try your hand at. Mostly Super Bowl type questions, but also a couple from some other current events:

Here are the answers to the trivia:

1. We know that the New Orleans Saints are going after their first ever title of any kind. Name the other 7 NFL franchises which have never won a title of any kind in their history.

Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars.

2. Somewhat related: name the 8 MLB franchises to never win a title in their history.

Mariners, Padres, Rockies, Rangers(Senators), Astros, Rays(Devil), Brewers(Pilots), Nationals(Expos)

3. Name the NFL teams whose record in Super Bowls all time is 0-1.

Cardinals, Seahawks, Panthers, Titans, Falcons, Chargers

4. Name the NFL teams whose record in Super Bowls all time is 1-0.

Jets, Ravens, Buccaneers

Note, for me to give you complete credit for a right answer, I am going to ask that all elements of some of these questions be correct!

5. Who has scored the most TDs in Super Bowl history?

Jerry Rice, 8 TDs (next closest only has 5)

6. OK, so Kobe Bryant has now scored the most points "AS A Laker". But, name the other people who have played for the Lakers who still have more overall career points than Kobe Bryant does.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Karl Malone, Shaquille O'Neal

7. What country has won the most medals in the history of the Winter Olympic Games?

Norway. (the US is 2d) (FYI, "the Soviet Union" is not considered the same as "Russia" for medals purposes, else those combined countries may have held the medals lead)

8. Name all the Quarterbacks who have started in 3 or more Super Bowl games.

John Elway-5, Terry Bradshaw-4, Roger Staubach-4, Tom Brady-4, Jim Kelly-4, Joe Montana-4, Troy Aikman-3, Bob Griese-3, Fran Tarkenton-3, Kurt Warner-3.

Some of you left out Warner as he is the only one who has started for 2 different teams.

9. Who has the most rushing yards in his career in Super Bowl games?

Franco Harris, 354 yards in his 4 games.

10. What are the most points scored by the losing team in a Super Bowl game? (who, when?)

31 points by the Dallas Cowboys vs. Steelers, 1978

11. What Super Bowl in history matched up the two closest teams geographically?

The Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts.

Potential Super Bowl matchups that would be closer than this one if they were ever to happen:

Lions vs. Browns

Ravens vs. Redskins

Ravens vs. Eagles

Eagles vs. Jets

Jets vs. Giants

12. Only 8 states have hosted a Super Bowl game. Name them.

Florida, Arizona, Michigan, Texas, California, Louisiana, Georgia, Minnesota.

The Super Bowl to be held in Jan/Feb of 2012 will be held in Indiana

Note: On the answer to #1, I know that some people, particularly those in Minnesota claim the Vikings as having won an NFL title in 1969 because they did win the title of the NFL that year, but, they did NOT win the AFL-NFL Championship game (later Super Bowl) that year. Thus, I do not consider them to be an ultimate champion in football.

Some people (notably Steeler trolls) may question why we would not give a championship crown to the Vikings that year, yet would give a championship crown say to the Buffalo Bills or 1964 and 1965 or to the Cleveland Browns circa 1946-1949.

The answer is simple: you are awarded a title if you won the ultimate championship available to you. If you did not win the ultimate championship available to you, as the Vikings did not, you don't get a crown. The Bills of the 60s went and won as far as they could go under the rules in place at the time. Same for the 40s Browns.

It would have been nice to decide things if the AAFC and NFL had played that "World Series of Football" which was proposed but not held. But since they didn't, each team was awarded a crown. But we can't award one to the 4 teams that "won" their NFL/AFL championships but later lost the first Super Bowl, those being the 69 Vikings, 68 Colts, 67 Raiders, and 66 Chiefs.
