CLEVELAND-- Former Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl quarterback Jake Delhomme will visit the Browns on Thursday, a league source told The Plain Dealer today.

Delhomme, who was cut by the Panthers last week, went 58-40 for them as a starter in seven seasons, including taking them to the Super Bowl after the 2003 season. The Panthers lost on a last-second field goal to the Patriots.

In Cleveland, Delhomme would most likely come in to challenge for the starting job. ESPN is reporting today that the Browns are shopping Brady Quinn, although a league source told The Plain Dealer that the Browns have not actively tried to trade anyone.

Delhomme, 35, was released with $12.5 million in guaranteed money still owed to him to make room for starter Matt Moore.

A fan and team favorite, Delhomme fell out of favor with the club this year when he threw a career-high 18 interceptions.

Panthers coach John Fox got emotional in the press conference last week and said, "He's done some great things for this team. Two (NFC) championship games, a Super Bowl, all those comeback victories. I'm not sure I've had any more respect for an NFL football player than Jake Delhomme.''

Details to follow.

I like him. Im sorry but that resume is impressive. I know he has had a bad year last year but i believe it was a fluke.

2 NFC Championships.

Remember, this is what everyone said about Favre when he "retired" from the Packers. Point and case.

Jake would be okay in the backup vetaran role for quinn or w/e qb the browns draft but you're better off with wallace as your starter.

I don't think he's going to go for a 6-7th round pick money like Wallace. Jakes going to cost us some $$$$ and then to have him as a backup???? I don't see it happening.

Guest Metcalf_FTW

His contract was outrageous, something like $25 million, so nobody in their right mind would have traded for him -- they had to cut him. He's not good. I hate to say it, but living in Charlotte, I would rather see Quinn play for us than to have Delhomme join Cleveland.

i think this is due diligence...

this just shows other teams that we're continuing a search, even if they wanna stall. i like how these guys create smoke.....

BUT

unless watson left, they've signed everyone else that came in.

I'm assuming that Quinn is gone if they sign Delhomme.

Possibly:

They sign Delhomme 1-3 year contract, nothing crazy, and he starts. They're rebuilding so you start with some stability at QB. He's not great, but he can play at a competative level and he's not as incompetant as DA or Tim Couch when his head is in the game. Seneca Wallace is a back up. They draft a good class of players to put some weapons on the team. Draft a QB this year or next year and groom him as the starter.

Another option if they sign Delhomme is he competes with Wallace for the job.

Those are all big IFs though. I can't believe that Holmgren is sold on Wallace being the starter yet though. Lets just watch and see what happens.

Joe Montana, Steve Young,Brett Farve,Matt Hasselbeck

Me thinks dude may know a quarterback when he sees one

Or a poser... as the case may be

Let's assume Holmie's got a clue...

My guess would be we're looking for a respectable veteran to groom a young prospect

Kyle Orton went to a Super Bowl with the Bears. Do you want him too?

Oh, and Delhomme ain't no Brett Favre my friend.

Didn't say he was. My point is that I believe Delhomme has some magic left in the tank. And don't worry, when/if he signs with the Browns and leads us to our first playoff appearance since 2002, ill be there to say i told you so :)

Kyle Orton did a very minimal thing to get the Bears to the Super Bowl. The Bears defense got them there.

Jake Delhomme was partially responsible for getting the Panthers there.

Oh my. Please say this ain't so... Delhomme completely lost it last year, he was absolutely horrible. Panthers fans are glad he is gone too. To borrow a phrase, clearly a case of "diminishing skills".

Brady nation is always nervous. I hate to bash a fellow Brown but the guy didn't prove anything to me and I do not want to hear any bullshit that the guy needs more time. Im over him.

so any QB with 12 games started should get a full season of games

got it

i dont care who the QB but the reasons people say quinn sucks are hillarious and 100% dead wrong

12 games is only about 1/3rd of the number of games you can decide about a QB before he's good or bad

Well 2 head coaches now don't see Quinn as a NFL starter. I got it. HE IS A BUST. get over it. He can't even stay healthy in 2 straight seasons. Count the losses and move on.

Who said that? I never heard either Holmgren or Mangini say anything of the sort. Quinn was sat last season because of his contract escalators, and if you can't see that then you are blind. Then he goes back in and gets hurt, and we need Anderson once again. And Holmgren said himself that Quinn wasn't given a fair shake and 12 games is not near enough to judge a QB.

Don't believe me?

A quarterback needs two full seasons before you can judge him

Somebody's got to play a full season. Not two games here, out two games, in three games ... It doesn't work. So pick one, commit, coach him up, build confidence, make him better and then surround him with good people.

I will agree, though. He's been hurt too much.
