leftwich?

Steelers traded their 7th rd pick to bucs for Leftwich, Adam Schefter just reported on twitter.

The Steelers now have Ben, Dixon, Batch and Leftwich at qb...

Batch recently decided not to retire and sign a 2 year contract with the Steelers. It's likely he won't retire, and I doubt the Steelers would want to cut him after resigning him.

Considering we traded a 7th for Leftwich we likley won't cut him after a few games.

Dixion has to much potential to be cut, although we might try to trade him for a 3rd/4th.

To me, this means any of 4 things:

1. Dixon will be traded

2. Ben will be traded

3. Ben is facing way more than a 2 game suspension

4. Batch suddenly changed his mind about retirement

#1 raises some interest. #2 and #3 raises a lot of interest.

NFL.com reports Ben's punishment will be handed out tomorrow...It was first reported it would be next week after the draft. Maybe the Rooney's requested an earlier punishment so potential traders know more about what they are dealing with?

Stools got leftwich for a 7th round pick....

Thoughts?

If I remember correctly, they had somewhere in the vicinity of 10 picks in the draft. With your franchise QB facing a suspension, and Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch waiting in the wings, why not spend....

Wait...

Byron Leftwich?

Uh oh.

I think dixon stays, bens the odd man out...maybe batch though.

Dixon showed some talent, but nothing to warrant anything more than a 5th. He has more value if ya keep him. Perhaps colbert isn't convinced batch can hold a clipboard....

Realistically, ben is shit in pitt. Majority of pitt season ticket holders have families and no doubt dan has gotten an earful.

I agree, Dixon hasn't done anything to prove he is any better than the 5th round pick he was drafted at. But, he is learning the Steelers system and I doubt they would trade away that progress at the same value he was drafted at. The Steelers are going to want to gain something from trading him, and as we both agree he hasn't proved to other teams he is worth what the Steelers are going to be asking for. That's why I don't think Dixon won't be involved in some type of trade...But who knows, maybe the Steelers told Al Davis he ran a good 40 time and Davis offerd the 8th overall for him.

it's ridiculous for anyone to think that ben roethlisberger will not be a steeler for anytime short of his whole career. we all need to step back and let this thing play out. hopefully he will learn a lesson (this time) not to expose appendages in moving traffic as it is not a safe or prudent practice.

Big Ben isn't going anywhere. All this is, is a calculated insurance policy. Leftwich knows the offense and he did well in his spot starts. I still don't know why most feel Leftwich is some sub par QB. He's sure as hell better than Delhomme and quite possibly one of the best backups in the league. I was sad to see him go the first time and glad to see him return. Giving up a 7th is nothing and I don't believe Pittsburgh is ready to toss Dixon in their without a contingency plan. I do believe Dixon is more than capable of leading the team to a few wins while Ben serves his suspension. Ben could be gone for 4 games or it could be a conditional suspension where he'll get 4 but if he goes to counseling it could get knocked down to 2, something a few media outlets have reported.

In addition to the above ESPN radio reported at some point today that Batch is considering retirement which is another explanation for the signing. Great move if you ask me and lol at the people saying "lol" when the Browns are planning to start Jake Delhomme.

Leftwich only appeared in five games in his previous stint as a Steeler, although he performed well in only thirty six pass attempts. He was essentially a backup to Josh Freeman in Tampa last year. He went 0 and 3 there after getting the starting job. I agree that giving up a seventh is nothing, but to say that Leftwich is better than Delhomme is a fallacy. Leftwich has accomplished nothing.

By the way, I like Leftwich as a player, but not someone I want playing QB for my team. I am familiar with one of the lineman that carried him down the field at Marshall, and I admire the competitive spirit he showed.

He led the Jags to a few playoff births and did just fine when he started for the Steelers. Jake Delhomme is one of the worst starting QB's in the league and that was before he was traded to the Browns. He also had a dominant run game in Carolina and one of the best receivers in the game and he still couldn't get it done. He ALWAYS implodes and he's not better than Leftwich. Either way that's just my opinion and he doesn't have to start the entire season. We already have our franchise QB.

Charlie stay as Inactive player Dixon No. 2 with Lefty taking over if Dixon falls on his face during Bens absence. OR... If you want to hear Cray talk. My buddy is a Bouncer at Mountaineer and was told by a Post Gazette Reporter Dont be shocked Ben being shipped to St Louis and the Steelers drafting Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska. Possibly Colt McCoy at no. 18. That would be unreal. But all Rumors... so IDK .

Leftwich was drafted in 2003.

He led them to one playoff berth in 2005 and they lost in the first round.

Garrard was the quarterback of the 2007 team that won a playoff game.

Leftwich had Fred Taylor with the Jags.

Leftwich had Jimmy Smith also.

Leftwich threw 51 passes with the Steelers.

Leftwich stays on the medical cart.

Delhomme led the Panthers to Super Bowl XXXVIII to face the New England Patriots. He went 16-of-33 for 323 yards, 3 passing touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 113.6 passer rating, but lost on a Field Goal from some guy named Vinatieri. Before you say that was a long time ago, the last time Leftwich contributed significantly to a good team was two years later with Jaguars.

How can you justify Leftwich being better than Delhomme? Leftwich managed the games he played in and didn't the lose the game for the Steelers, that is all.

But you're right, he doesn't have to start the whole season. Hopefully he doesn't see the field before Dennis Dixon. But to try to say that Byron Leftwich is a good quarterback is a farce.

Thoughts?

Actually a relatively smart move. He played ok but not spectacularly for them last year, knows the system, and they only gave up a seventh round pick, which is the same as what they got in compensation when they lost him to free agency. The only down side is if Casey Hampton thinks his jersey says Sandwich and accidentally eats him. Rapistberger will probably sit 4 games, Leftovers could handle something like that I think. Batch gets hurt every time he suits up, Dixon I have not seen enough of to make a judgement on him.

Ding! Ding!

He's getting at least four.

And all three of those other quarterbacks suck.

Zombo

You my dear pal are spot on. Ben Date Raper (sorry Steeler apologists, it is what it is) will be gone 4 games- take it to the bank. Damn shame Goodell didn't tell the schedule makers to really stick it to the Steelers and put the away game against the Saints in the first four games. BTW, the Ravens lucked out we didn't. OTOH, we get the opportunity to bust Ben's pee-pee, and the Ratbirds don't until the end of the season.

PS Ben, here's a word of advice- you could have picked up a first class ho down there in Georgia for way less than what that suspension's gonna cost ya. :)

That's what is so sick about the guy. He seems to enjoy forcing himself on drunk women. The guy is a threat to society and should get 6 games. After all, he would be a registered sex offender in prison if he weren't a football star. 18 year old guys have to register becuase they get 'serviced' by 16 year olds and Ben gets to walk free. The guy is sick.

Iirc....they just gave up a pick for a qb they let go.....

Colbert needs his head checked

Yea, what is up with that? Leftwich was with the Steelers in '08. How did he leave Peetown? Cut/traded/FA?

Personally, I think he was brought in to play QB while BR is out.

I don't think they will trade BR, but the situation is fluid. I don't see how they could get rid of their "franchise" QB just weeks after ditching their best receiver. That would drastically deplete their offensive capability....I don't care who you may have taken in the draft to replace them.

They would then have to completely rely on their defense, a defense that showed some cracks at the end of last year.

Well, when you start arguing who is better, Leftwich or Delhomme, that is like arguing about which one of Cinderella's ugly stepsisters is better looking.

Grabbing Leftwich is, nevertheless, an indication that the Steelers are not comfortable in handing over the team to Dixon, even on a temporary basis during BRs suspension. (To me, that is not a good sign for his future with that team)

He probably signed with Tampa because he saw a chance to start. TB had no established QB like Pittsburgh did. I mean, they still don't, do they? They have Josh Freeman who was a rookie last year, taken in the first round, but he is by no means established, though he will probably be the Bucs starting QB on opening day vs. the Browns. Wouldn't he?

What do you know....already starting to break down the first game!

OK, so here is a bit of irony that I just discovered:

When Leftwich signed his FA contract with the Bucs, the Steelers were awarded a compensatory pick in the 7th round of this year's draft: #242 overall. This was not TBs own 7th round pick. They still have that at position #217.

So, now, the Steelers come back to the Bucs and say, we will give you the #242 pick that we got for losing Leftwich to you to give him back to us. Tampa says no, we want your regular 7th round pick, #225 for Leftwich. The Steelers give in and agree to it.

So, basically the Bucs gave up nothing for him, get a year's use out of him. The Steelers get an older, wearier Leftwich and give up their #225 pick.

Tampa now has their own #217 and the #225 pick for a guy they may have released in training camp!
