why cant we win
Without a doubt the best cover cornerback in college football, Haden has drawn comparisons to some of the National Football League's elite at his position 7TH PICK JOE HADEN WELCOME TO THE CLEVELAND BROWNS!!!! Analysis Read & React: Typically plays in press or off-man coverage, reading the receiver to gain an advantage on the route. Good straight-line for the deep route. Reacts quickly in zone coverage and when he's facing the quarterback in man coverage. Little wasted motion in closing once he sees the ball in the air. Man Coverage: Very strong in man coverage. Quick, active hands to provide an initial pop to the receiver in press coverage. Quick feet and loose hips for the transition to run downfield. Good balance and body control to mirror the receiver. Can plant his foot in the ground and explode out of cuts. Good use of hands downfield to prevent separation. Shows a legitimate late burst to close after the ball has been released. Good timing and hand-eye coordination to slap the ball away as it arrives. Zone Coverage: Smooth, low backpedal out of his stance. Maintains cushion with his backpedal, keeping his eyes alert to receivers in his zone. Changes direction smoothly with no wasted motion. Plays even faster than he has been timed, a credit to his recognition and efficient change-of-direction ability. Closing/Recovery: Among his best traits. Plants and drives back to the ball very well. Accelerates late and has the body control to contort in space and slap the ball away without drawing a flag. Good straight-line speed to run with any receiver and has a late burst to close if beaten initially. Locates the ball in the air. Good vertical and times his leaps to compete for the jump ball. Run Support: Reads run and is quick to close toward the line of scrimmage. Evades blocks due to his lateral agility and anticipation and is willing to take on bigger ballcarriers. Understands his role on the edge and approaches it with a workmanlike mentality. Tackling: Takes good tackle angles, going low against bigger ballcarriers. Isn't an explosive hitter. Grab-and-drag tackler more often than scouts would like, rather than wrapping up securely, but rarely has his tackles broken. Can be dragged a bit by bigger ballcarriers, but gets his man to the ground. Intangibles: Signed with Florida as a standout prep quarterback and all-around athlete. Originally was expected to play slot receiver, but elected to compete for the starting cornerback position rather than back up Percy Harvin. Team-first player who is a standout special teams player despite his All-American status. Played in 2009 on the punt return, kickoff and punt teams. Guest birddog1
Fk this pick.... we couldnt go with Earl Thomas? Really??? That's what I'm thinking. Kind of disappointed. Edited to add: The more time that passes the more I am warming to this pick. I was so set on either Berry it was disappointing. Now I'm beginning to think this went the right way. I was glad to see the emotion from players, including Haden, it shows that they understand how blessed they are.

TN Browns Backer
I will admit draft workouts dont always do players justice, and going to Tennessee I saw haden alot and he did play in arguably one of the best conferences in the country.... its just not the exciting pick I guess but I do trust in M.H.... lets see if we make any other noise tonight
Dawgstucknpa
No wonder we always suck.....our fans suck. This is a great pick. They are loaded at arguably the most important position on D. Lighten up Francis.......
Gips
Haden is a good solid pick but we desperately need a real safety...mangini is an idiot elam just isnt going to cut it the guy has no coverage skills and is a fairly poor tackler... brownbuckeye
Ok well why wouldnt we draft Earl Thomas considering he can play both safety AND cornerback. Not to mention he's much bigger than Joe Haden.

Chris.
Good piece from Pluto... Joe Haden? I guess that's . . . OK. Haden started 40 games at Florida and was considered the top cornerback in the draft at the end of the season. Then Haden ran a poor 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, and it seemed he had dropped out of the top 10. Meanwhile, the Browns made noise about trading for Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford -- no chance of that happening. They seemed to really like Tennessee safety Eric Berry, but the Kansas City Chiefs (thanks, Scott Pioli and Romeo Crennel) took him at No. 5. Some in the Browns front office really liked Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson. Others were intrigued by Texas safety Earl Thomas. But Wilson played at Boise State -- a non-BCS school -- and that might have counted against him. And Thomas played only two years at Texas, which might be a bit of a concern. When Browns General Manager Tom Heckert said he wanted the No. 7 pick to be a certain starter, it appears that Haden was the best bet. He was first-team All-American, a big-time player for a powerful team in perhaps the toughest conference in the nation, the Southeastern Conference. This means newly acquired veteran cornerback Sheldon Brown can play some safety, if Haden is immediately ready to start opposite Eric Wright. If Haden needs some time to adjust to the pros, the Browns can go with Brown at cornerback and Haden being a fifth defensive back in passing situations. While the pick might seem like a yawner to Browns fans, it makes sense. It's also good to know the Browns have nine more picks, and a few more days to make trades. http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/blog/index....t_get_a_sa.html
playerjdd
welcome haden, i am pleased to say our corner position is finally set. Now go get us a starting safety. Maybe Nate Allen USF
Canton Mike
I think Haden is a great pick. He is considered a super shutdown corner, which will make our blitz packages that much more effective. Combine aggressive blitzing with solid coverage & you can really see immediate improvement in the overall defense. IMHO, he will be an asset to the defense along the lines of what Joe Thomas means to the offense. This kid also played against PRIMO competition too. He's a winner. The way I see it, this is a great start to this draft. Mike

next2nothing
I like the pick also. I wanted Berry (I guess Romeo wasn't thinkin Arby's this time...) but I'm glad that we still upgraded an area of need instead of trading out. I have a feeling we might be coming back into the first round later...
roach
This is the player i wanted. If we can land Colt McCoy in round 2, this will be an outstanding draft.
VaporTrail
I like it, I don't really think we could go wrong picking either him or Earl Thomas. Do we get a QB tomorrow?

Thaak
Ok well why wouldnt we draft Earl Thomas considering he can play both safety AND cornerback. Canton Mike
Sheldon Brown is going to play safety for now....I believe. You are probably right, he may become a "swing man"...CB & Safety. We got our solid cover guy in Haden & Taylor Mays is still there (a little "wildness" on D could be a plus) + I also expect a trade for another early 2nd round pick (probably for a QB). Then it's DL & receivers with an OL thrown in. Mike
ATENEARS
I viewed this draft as thinking that Eric Berry was our man, and we would see if he is going to be an elite safety at this level. I figured if we didn't get him that we would be sold (politician style) on wjhoever was our pick. in the 90 minutes or so since we've drafted Haden, I have really grown to like this pick. Call it drinking the koolaid or whatever, but there was something about Berry's game that didn't sit well with me this year. Spiller may have been a reach, but Haden just feels good, like a great fit. I like this pick. I love the drafting of a DB and would love to see a safety added as well. If Colt ain't there tomorrow, would Mays suck? I'd take Mays now in round #2. Let's kick some ass on defense!
SuperSteelers
I hated the pick, but only because I wanted us to get him. Anyone on here that doesn't like this pick now will love it come December. His ears alone can cover the left side.
daddybull1
Finally a shutdown corner, one need taken care of.... He had slow times at the combine because he was hurt but he ran anyway.... Wow, Tebow to Denver!!!!!! Now the Quinn fan club west will be bitchin cause they didn't get to see enough of him and he never got a chance, WOW!! My dream...Trade DQ & a couple picks to the Rams for their 2nd pick & keep our 2nd rounder too. Then take Colt AND Mays. With the cover guys we now have, I feel Mays is the type safety who would work very well. He COULD be that defensive BIG PLAY guy we need.
