BEREA — Chris Gocong’s alma mater might seem as familiar as the University of Mars.

A few Stark County football fans might recall that Gocong’s team, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, is where former Massillon Tigers head coach John Maronto was a fireplug guard.

Others might ask, “Wasn’t that John Madden’s school?” Indeed it was.

At this point of his NFL career, five years in, Gocong must wonder if his days as a Cal Poly Mustang were real. Was it him who made an NCAA Division I-AA 231⁄2 sacks in 2005? Were his 42 sacks in 41 games as a Mustang a dream?

Tom Heckert’s former team, the Eagles, thought it was real. In the 2006 draft, Philadelphia picked Gocong midway through the third round.

His playing time was real. In the 2007, ‘08 and ‘09 seasons, Gocong played in 51 games, four in the postseason.

In his final game as an Eagle, a playoff game this year, he got to Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. By then, the sack seemed like a mirage. In his first 50 NFL games, he had a grand total of four sacks.

Now, he is somewhere else — Cleveland. He would love for his football life to seem real again, to feel like ... him.

“I’ve always wanted to play in a 3-4,” he says, standing on the field where he had just spent another practice with a 3-4 team.

Gocong, who looks to be about 6-foot-2 and says he weighs 260 pounds, played in a 4-3 defense with the Eagles.

“I’ve always wanted to get to the quarterback more,” he said. “With the Eagles, it was more of a run-stopping thing.”

Gocong did his thing adequately. He was credited with 129 solo tackles the last three years. But ...

“It did get frustrating at times ... where your role is just hitting the fullback, or whatever,” he said.

Gocong relishes the low jersey numbers coming back into view. Nos. 5, 7, 9 ... the numbers worn by Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger and Carson Palmer.

LIKES RYAN’S APPROACH

He is excited about his new defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan.

“It’s like a breath of fresh air,” he said. “He’s so open to his players.”

He enters a linebacking system devised by Eric Mangini and Ryan, who go back to New England’s 2001 and 2003 Super Bowl runs, when Ryan was linebackers coach and Mangini tutored the secondary. The Patriots were known for collecting smart, versatile linebackers. That’s what Gocong is supposed to be.

“(A versatile role) is what I’m hoping for,” Gocong said. “Throw me in there. I’m always trying to learn.”

Mangini knows what this guy did in NCAA Division I-AA ball. His Jets would have drafted Gocong if the Eagles hadn’t gotten there first.

“I know what I saw from him in college, and it was good,” Mangini said. “He is a really smart person and player. He moves well. He is understanding the concepts well.”

In Mangini’s first year as head coach, the Browns made 40 sacks with a patchwork crew, up from 17 in 2008.

What did the general manager, Heckert, and Mangini have in mind when the Browns traded for Gocong? Do the college math.

the only person dq is going to hurt by not showing up to mini-camp is himself. the browns sound like they're ready to go and i can't wait to see what gocong can provide this team with. i think he's going to thrive in rob ryan's 3-4 d.

i like this guy, he fits. real smart too. for someone who never really anticipated a career in the NFL it has sure worked out well for him.

fwiw i think Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo was Chuck Liddell's Alma Mater as well. they should bottle that water there.
