Browns lose punter Zastudil for the season

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 17, 2010 12:22 PM ET

The Browns will have a new punter this season.

The team placed Dave Zastudil on injured reserve Tuesday, meaning that Reggie Hodges will be the team's punter and holder for 2010. Hodges isn't actually that new, as he replaced Zastudil late last season when nine-year veteran tore his patella tendon.

Zastudil struggled to recover from the injury, but Browns coach Eric Mangini said he wouldn't be surprised to see him back with the Browns in 2011.

I was worried about this. Wonder if they'll sign someone to compete with Reggie.

Zastudil is a damn good one.

Veteran OL Floyd Womack out for rest of the preseason with knee injury. Likely had arthroscopic surgery. Will be re-evaluated before season.

TE Joel Gamble resigned to take Zastudil's roster spot

Rookie OL Shaun Lauvao has been excused for the rest of the week for personal reasons; may or may not play Saturday vs. Rams

Where did you hear Womack was out for the rest of the preseason? I am finding nothing anywhere on it.

Guest c-dawg

I am an Ohio Bobcat alum who had seats on the 45 yard line during Z's playing days at OU.

We had the #1 rushing attack in the nation and Z would ALWAYS hose the opposing team with a field-position-destroying, high-as-hell punt. He averaged over 45 yards or something sick like that.

It was crushing to have him go on and win a Super Bowl with the ShitBirds, but there it is.

We'll miss you Z! Hope to see you back next year!

Me too! but I missed Zastudil playing. I didn't go to any games the year that I was there getting my masters degree. Sorry I missed him. He is one of the best in the NFL and he will be missed this year. Hodges is not nearly as good. Go Bobcats and go Browns!

How did Hodges do last season?

He had a net average of 36.4 with 15 inside the 20 on 45 punts.

He ranked 12th in the league.

He isn't going to launch 60 yarders, but he is pretty good directionally so he can pin returners against one of the sidelines which simplifies coverage.

From Wikipedia

Gardocki is best remembered by some for an incident while playing for the Browns in a 2000 game against the Steelers in Cleveland Browns Stadium. After being tackled by Steelers linebacker Joey Porter following a punt that left Gardocki briefly motionless (Porter would be penalized for roughing the punter), Gardocki flipped the middle finger twice to Steelers head coach Bill Cowher. The incident, caught on live television, resulted in a $5,000 fine for Gardocki[1].

Pricelessssss stuff. Gardocki is forty and hasn't played for 3 years. But he was better then Hodges is now.

I bet Cribbs could handle it <_<

He can punt it and run down and be the guy to make the tackle. Make him a long snapper to, whats the point of wasting a roster spot for a guy that does nothing but long snap...never understood that.

Hey now. Our long snapper was a 2x pro bowler if I'm not mistaken!

PLEASE! I HATE REGGIE HODGES ALMOST AS MUCH AS BMAC. Grand. Gardocki?

I'll grant you your hate for McDonald- but you're way off base on Hodges. Reggie pales only in comparison to Zastudil- who happens to be one of the best in the business. Here's the stats from last season (more than 40 punts).

Zastudil- rank 3rd, avg 44.7, net 39.1

Hodges- rank 11th, avg 39.8, net 36.4

So unless you know of another Ray Guy out there in the bushes, I'd say Hodges is certainly an above average replacement.

Someone needs to watch the video I posted a few posts back. I don't need a punter that doesn't know what he is doing.

On a random note, we had a punter in 2006, I don't recall his name, but does anyone remember? He always would punt the ball 12 yards. It was great. Needless to say he started 2 games tops.

Pontbriand is one of the best at what he does and deserves his roster spot. Absolute accuracy on his long snaps. You remember the Buffalo ice bowl from a few years back when their long snapper shot one 10 feet over the punter's head for a safety?
