CLEVELAND (AP)—A person familiar with the situation says the Cleveland Browns have agreed to contract terms with former Pro Bowl kick returner Clifton Smith.

Smith was released earlier this season by Miami, and worked out for the Browns on Tuesday, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract has not been finalized.

The Browns need a kick returner after Pro Bowler Joshua Cribbs(notes) dislocated toes in Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets. Cribbs could be out for some time, leaving rookie Joe Haden(notes) as Cleveland’s primary returner.

NFL.com earlier reported the possibility of Smith’s signing.

Smith made Tampa Bay’s roster as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He made the Pro Bowl as a rookie after becoming the first player in club history to return a kickoff and punt for touchdowns in the same season. He finished last season on injured reserve with a concussion.

Per Adam Shefter Twitter ReTweet @KCS316

"Brett Ratliff was buying a phone in my store when he got waived, over the phone. It was brutal."

Geez. How brutal could it have been? He's a giant knucklehead if he didn't see this coming from the day he was hired as an emergency backup.

I'm sure it was brutal. He just realized that his dreams of being a pro football player are over. He will most likely have to get a real job that pays like crap because he probably didn't learn anything in school.

I'm thinking that would be a brutual realization.

Are you kidding me, all he has to do is to go back to Utah and get a job with a booster.

Also I like the pick up of a pro bowl kick returner. It makes it so Cribbs doesn't have to come back before being completely healed, and it makes is so maybe Cribbs can focus more on being a WR than a returner.

Even as a backup he made around a million dollars in 4 years.

I thought Zastudil was already placed on IR? Can't believe he lost his roster spot to injury ... tough game. Good luck to him, he served well before the black guy beat him out.

I cant believe he is gone either, but this regime is playing for keeps and while harsh this winners only policy better serves the team and fans when and if there is an equal or better option and or involving less money, as much as i liked zastudil i like hodges just as much simply because he brings trick play ability zasty did not have, not to mention he isnt a bad punter...

Hodges is a threat that opponents have to consider before the line can just drop back to plow the row!

The days of the insidious cleveland browns old folks home policy of keeping mediocre overpaid benchwarmers are gone, and even very good but replaceable injury prone and overpaid players who are injured like zasty are not exempt, this kind of policy has been long missing from this organization and is another sure sign we are going the right direction!
