THE BROWNS BOARD

Game Notes vs. Carolina

Here is my weekly analysis. Comment and criticize at will.

POSITIVES:

-Hillis as usual. He is keeping my fantasy team alive right now with 37 points. The fact that he is being listed with some of the Browns greatest RB's is huge. I can't wait to see what his entire career is like in Cleveland. In my life I have never seen a good running game in Cleveland, so this is foreign to me. Couldn't be more excited.

-Give credit to Brian Robiskie. As much as I have hated on this guy, he had a great game and maybe this is the turning point he has been looking for. I know it was against Carolina but if he does this the rest of the season, we have to give him another chance.

-Vickers...wow. This guy. He deserves almost as much credit at Hillis. It will be a blasphemy if he isnt in the Pro Bowl this year. He just can't catch.

-Defensive Line was outstanding. We got so much pressure on Clausen (who is easier to knock down than a 5 year old Jets Fan...yeah I said it).

-Haden is going to be the next Revis. And Ward is gonna be the next Polamalu. These are facts.

-Phil Dawson/Reggie Hodges were outstanding. Phil Dawson is now the new PAY DA MAN.

-Rob Ryan trying to catch the Jimmy Clausen pass was too funny. He then jokingly yelled at the ref to throw a flag.

-John Kasay having an off day.

NEGATIVES:

-Play calling was terrible. As usual. There was a point where the camera zoomed in on Hillis and McCoy talking on the sideline. The lips of Hillis read: "Daboll is an idiot. I can't do anything out here." And Colt said "I know I hear you."

-Delhomme sucks. I know he spread the ball around and made some good throws yada yada. But its the same story with the second half INT's. He won't change. He is a decent backup but is too scary to put out there.

-Secondary cannot tackle (except for Haden and Ward). Brown, Adams, and Ventrone just whiffed every time. Elam was always the last resort tackler. Same old defense.

-Evan Moore had a bad game. I don't know why but he did. Dropped passes and that fumble were inexcusable.

-The game shouldn't have been this close. Ever. We are lucky to have this win and if we were to lose, Mangini would be gone tomorrow. He has saved his job for at least another week.

-FOX sucks. I am so glad we are in the AFC so we get CBS most of the time. I just hate everything about FOX. Torry Holt needs to learn to get peoples names right. He just kept saying "number 41" or "That guy". Oh well.

That is all. Critique!

I agree with the FOX network comment. I don't agree with your claim that the playcalling was terrible. Some of Delhomme's decisions were crap. Let's just hope that it's rust, and let's hope that McCoy heals fast!

Disagree. The play calling was crap again after we got a comfortable lead. All the first half that toss sweep or stretch play with Hillis was doing wonders when we were pulling our tackle and guard in unison. Then for some freaking reason we stopped doing it. We couldnt even get one and two yard plays when we needed them when we constantly tried to run up the gut or QB sneaks. Daboll isn't entirely the blame today, but he he had his share of comatose moments.

We stopped doing it because they widened the linebacker splits...that's called adjusting to their adjustment. We couldn't get one yard because our offensive line couldn't block...not because the play call sucked. Give it a rest. Players play.

O-line didn't suck. Delhomme had tons of time.

Really? That's what he said? or could it possibly have been "why did Jake call his own number on that play?"

The fact is, we still have a few players starting on this team ,that would have no chance to start for most other team

We are big and slow, and when we have to substitute we get even slower...we've got average players playing hurt, that makes them less than average

I hate to say it , but we are still two more draft classes from being a consistent winner

what you say is true BUT think about this: if we had a game changing wide receiver with momass as the #2 and colt mccoy starting from day one we could easily be a seven win team right now. yes we need to upgrade a lot of positions but look at how we've played against some of the toughest teams in the league with what we have now.

i'm saying playoffs next year. we just need to keep that injury bug the hell out of town.

Yea, the announcers, WOW. Torry Holt, on several occasions started sentences and then trailed off. I remember him saying something about Peyton Hillis "Yea when you are 6 yrs old" then he said nothing else - and this was right after calling a play on the field. I thought maybe I misheard him. Then a few other times, starting what seems to be a pre-written piece then just trail off into nothing. AWFUL. There has got to be some other punch drunk players that at least can be comical in their poor commentary.

Right now it is absured to think that Hillis gets less carries (26) than pass attempts by any of our current QBs (Delhomme 31). Even if we need to put Bell in more (2 for 14 yards today, plays better when has more carries) we should have more running attempts than passing attempts, at the very least the number or runs to passes should be even.

Good to see Cribbs back in today, hopefully we will get to see him at WR and in the flash package next week. Also nice to see them finally use Mitchell. He had a nice 9 yard run today and was actually thrown to once while he was in.

"IF" we had drafted say Dez Bryant...We'd all be on here bitch'n about how bad we need a shut down corner

It took years to dig these hole...It's gonna take a couple to fill'em back in.

+++ On the injury bug...we need the Orkin man to exterminate that SOB

exactly. listen, i could care less how it gets done i.e. defensive draft needs then a stab at a third round quarterback, you know? .......i'm just happy as hell that for once in recent history i can say or think that we finally have a strong foundation in the FO that seems to know what they're doing.

if we draft like we did last year that's a home run in my book.

Bell completely whiffed on a pass-block though that resulted into a split second sack. He showed decent patient on one of the runs, but seems to fall forward/down once into the hole.

Mitchell is quick, but on the one pass thrown to him he didn't sheild the defender very well. In fact, that is kind of a trend right now with all of our receivers, we leave the door open too much for DB's to get a hand on the ball.

I saw Robiskie sit down in the seam a time or two, like we should be using him, but Delhomme elected to throw into tighter coverage instead. Robiskie got a bit better at keeping sealing off his coverage and make possesion receptions as the game went on. I still hate the SOB, but we could sure use him to make plays.

MoMass on one key 3rd-and-long, didn't release off of the line until late, then appeared to attempt to cut it wide and up the field. Hell, the play was over before he ever thought about looking back for the ball. He just pisses me off to no end.

I watched a lot of the Receivers today, so it was a horrible game to view today. I'm getting a bit tired of us always trying to force that deep straight-on pass to the TE over the middle. There is no angle to work with for the QB's and by running that pattern we draw the safeties toward the middle and those were the times Robiskie was open in the created seams. Instead we keep trying to force a high pass down the middle that is gonna get picked one of these times.

I hate our receivers. Hillis runs a better executed pattern out of the back field than these guys do on an average basis.

NEGATIVES:

-Secondary cannot tackle (except for Haden and Ward). Brown, Adams, and Ventrone just whiffed every time. Elam was always the last resort tackler. Same old defense.

Sheldon Brown's shoulder was gone, he was in position to make tackles, he just couldn't go and lower the boom. Gotta give the guy credit for trying to play through the injury though, unlike many other sista's we've had around here.

Did anyone else seem to notice that whenever Adams came in (mostly to spell Brown), that we blitzed from either the corner or safety position? First Adams himself trotted in and on the same got a hit on Santa Clausen, then the next time Adams came in to relieve Sheldon Browns, we sent Elam for another sack.

I thought Elam had a pretty good game. I'm starting to like that guy. He roamed well yesterday and in recent weeks.

I agree Haden looks very good. He impressed the hell out of me with his tackles and it didn't appear that Carolina had any interest in testing his coverage skills.

Regarding Ward ... hate to say this, but I think he has hit a bit of the rookie wall. Sure he is in on a lot of tackles, but they are also in the Andra Davis neighborhood of 6-8 yards down field. He had the one nice stick behind the line of scrimmage in run support and he tackles well, but Polamalu-like? Naaa, not yet at least or even close.

I feel like the play calling was decent in the first half, then it fell apart in the second half. We set ourselves up for a huge blowout and then we lay a giant egg in the second half! Delhomme comes out and throws two picks against a defense he knew...WELL! Inexcusable! He should have had John Fox's number, and it looked that way in the 1st Qtr. Delhomme is not over his awful 2009 season and its not helping us! lets just hope this is over with ASAP!

Hillis is the bread and butter of this offense. He is allowing us to play AFC North football! He plays smart, he dosnt try to run east and west, he runs north and south lowers his shoulders and lows people over! He has a great FB in front helping him out but the Hillis just has a knack for the game! He loves to play football!

Once again I was impressed with TJ and Haden! They played smart and props to joe for the big pick! Joe should start over Wright the rest of the way with Sheldon Brown playing opposite! Now i know we bash Mike Adams sometimes but when Sheldon Brown went down, he came up with some huge plays to get the ball back into our offenses hands!

Thats all!

GO BROWNIES!

Nice post, Skippy, we watched the same game.

Some guys are levelling off, but other guys are starting to make a real difference (Elam, Robiskie).

On the injury front, I'm concerned with Shel Brown and we need Fujita back. And I'd love to see Cribs get his explosiveness back, he could be a difference-maker in Miami if is back to the old Josh.

Zombo

I am not worried about Sheldon Brown. He has missed one game in his 9 year career. I think we are ok.

+1. Sheldon is a warrior and I think he's playing limited but he's better than anything else we've got right now. He'll be okay. I still don't understand how he gave up that sideline throw to Lafell but the guy should have been down by contact and the clock run out anyway.
