THE BROWNS BOARD

Future Tailgaters Unite. Possible 2011 schedule

Here is a possible scenario involving the Browns 2011 schedule scenario, including if the NFL goes to 18 games (that is assuming there is a season at all). No dates involved here, just opponents:

HOME games:

Baltimore

Cincinnati

Pittsburgh

Houston

Indianapolis

San Francisco

Arizona

plus, if the standings ended as they are now with the Browns in 3rd place the AFC East 3rd place team, right now, the Miami Dolphins.

If they expanded to the 18 games (and the Browns end up 3rd) it is proposed that they would have a home game against the AFC West 4th place team, right now, the Broncos

AWAY games:

Baltimore

Cincinnati

Pittsburgh

Jacksonville

Tennessee

Seattle

St. Louis

plus, if the standings ended as they are now with the Browns in 3rd place the AFC West 3rd place team, right now, the Raiders.

If they expanded to 18 games and the Browns end up 3rd it is proposed they would have a game against the AFC East 4th place team, right now, the Bills.

So there you go for your future tailgate and possible travel plans. If you like to travel to road games you could do a trip to the northwest to sip your Starbucks, or possibly to Oakland and head north to sip wine in the Napa Valley...or maybe ballpeen could host a tailgate party down in HeeHawYeeHaw land at Nashville and sip some of his moonshine.

Shouldn't the Rams come here? I went to St. Louis in 2007, had a blast. I always thought the NFL rotated the schedule so AFC/NFC teams alternated home & home every 8 years.

Here's hoping these idiot owners don't lock out the players and there is a 2011.

I did last time for a group of 8-10 from Columbus who I know from another board.

If the Browns play in Nashville, I am there. Nashville is a GREAT weekend town.

Seeing how you put down everything South I wouldn't expect you would be making the trip. :P

I just put down the South because I know it gets your goat peen. If I didn't make it to Nashville it would not really have anything to do with not wanting to go to the South, but would have to do with other matters. I will actually be going to South Carolina over Christmas. In fact, I was in Nashville just last year for a convention. There are parts of the South in Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia that I actually do want to see. Plus I am going to North Carolina next summer.

You have some home/away games mixed up with out of division opponents. The Rams, Cardinals, Jags, and Titans will be coming to Cleveland. The Browns will travel to play the Colts, Texans, 49ers, and Seahawks.

Hmm, I am seeing some conflicting information on this. One site has it the way you say, another had it some of the way I had it. I guess we will have to wait and see. No one should be booking anything yet, fair to say?

I'd be damned happy if they finally played some west coast games. I'd go to both Seattle and San Francisco, among the coolest cities going (Portland actually took #1 as the "Coolest City in America" recently).

I think they were referring to just temperature and precipitation. Now, if they said it was the "Grooviest city in America" that might mean something to us old hippies. One way or the other it does seem that they are going to play in either San Fran or Oakland. You can get to the Napa Valley from either..

It doesn't get me and why I added the face.

As said....all of this is projection. Maybe 8 years ago the league came out with a schedule template that went through this season.

All of these schedule projections are being based on that template and just starting over.

I don't know why the NFL would change it, but then again, the NFL seems to be big on change, so who knows??

Maybe there could be a better way to do it. Some don't like the fact that the first place team must play all the other first place teams in the conference where the 4th place team gets to play all the other 4th place teams in the conference. Some think their should be more interconference games if they go to an 18 game season.

The intradivison round robin will always be there, but how could the rest of the schedule be handled?

Perhaps they could develop a schedule along these lines: Let's take the Browns for an instance:

1. Every year they do the home and home round robin in their own division. 2 Games each then with Pitt., Balt. Cinci

That accounts for 6 games on the 18 game schedule.

2. To develop real interconference rivalries the AFC North teams will play each of the NFC North teams every year. (likewise the Easts will alway play the Easts, the Souths the Souths, and the Wests the West). Thus every year the Browns would have a game against the Lions, Bears, Vikings and Packers, alternating home and home from year to year.

This would foster some real rivalries. The NY teams would always play a game each year. The Raiders and 49ers would always play. The Chiefs and the Rams, Jax v. Tampa, Titans vs. Falcons, etc. etc. This would reduce travel costs as well.

This accounts for another 4 games on the 18 game schedule.

3. Then, like now, the AFC would take alternating years and play all the teams in the other AFC Divisions: Example, one year the Browns and the other AFC North team would play all the teams in the AFC East, the next year all the teams in the West, the next year all the team in the AFC South.

That is 4 more games on the 18 game schedule

4. Then, like now the Browns would play the two teams that had the same position in the standings from the AFC Divisions they were not otherwise scheduled to play. E.g. If the Browns came in third, and next year they were scheduled to play the entire AFC East, they would also play the teams from the AFC West and the AFC South that came in 3rd. That is two more games.

5. For the final two games the Browns would play two games against the other 12 teams from the NFC on a regular rotation basis. OK, that would mean that the Browns would only see the Giants/Eagles/Redskins/Cowboys/Panthers/Bucs/Saints/Falcons/Cards/Rams/49ers/Seahawks once every 6 years. But they are making up for it by establishing those regular rivalries with the Lions/Bears/Packers/Vikings.

If this doesn't work out well with some, then perhaps some teams should switch what division they are in. e.g. the Dolphins could go to the South, the Ravens to the East and the Colts to the North. Then the Ravens could have a yearly game against close teams like Philly and DC, the Dolphins could have an annual game vs. Tampa, and Indy could have an annual game vs. Chicago etc.

This way there would always be 12 Conference games and 6 non-conference game.

What do you think?

I think you put a lot of thought in to your reply, but in the end I think you will never see that.

First, way too many inter-conference games. The idea is to find the best team in your conference to represent it against the other. You can't have the NFC holding a big sway on who make it in the AFC. The balance of power swings around, but fairly slowly.

You could easily end up with the best AFC team playing in the best AFC conference who also play on a yearly basis against the best NFC teams.

As far as how things are set up....it is what it is.....in many cases it doesn't make sense.

I admit I was trying to mix it up a bit. I think the proposal now is if they go to 18 games that the additional two games would be against teams in the same conference. If the Browns came in 3rd place they would play not only the 3d place teams in the "other 2" divisions, but the 4th place teams as well. In that respect then you would have 14 conference games and 4 nonconference games. Under my scenario this would change to 12 and 6.

I don't know how else to do it. It might be nice to try to put in 13 conference and 5 nonconference games....but I don't know how that could be worked out.
