Browns facing questions at QB for finale

Posted: News | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Bruce Gradkowski, Cleveland Browns, Ken Dorsey

The struggling Cleveland Browns had been relegated to starting third-string QB Ken Dorsey. Now, they might be forced to go to a fourth-stringer to lead an offense that hasn’t scored a touchdown in five games.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said during his weekly Monday press conference that Dorsey suffered a rib injury and a slight concussion in the 14-0 loss to the Bengals. The potential loss of Dorsey would mean the Browns, who have already lost Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson to season-ending injuries, would have to start Bruce Gradkowski, who was signed by the team on Dec. 2.

Crennel indicated Dorsey’s progress will be tracked during the week as the Browns determine his status. If Dorsey is out, Richard Bartel would be signed from the practice squad to serve as No. 2 quarterback.

Another option for the Browns is to use receiver and return specialist Josh Cribbs more at quarterback. Cribbs, a collegiate quarterback at Kent State, lines up behind center in certain packages for the Browns and has been taking snaps during practice. The hesitation for lining up Cribbs more at quarterback is he would be available less on returns and special teams.

“We might have to depend on Josh a little bit more,” said Crennel

I actually think this is a good time to find out if Gradkowski can be our backup QB to whichever QB we keep next year (I think BQ). Getting Cribbs in there more will also let us know the viability of extending the use of our Flash Package next year.

Just wow. All of that QB wrangling done in the off season on this board and this is where we end up.

If someone here had said "Anderson will have a season ending injury, so will Quinn, and so will Dorsey - you'll end up with only 4 wins and not be able to score a TD for the last month of the season", we would have all thrown him out of here.

Unbelievable. We've definitely had lopsided luck the last 2 years. Had the best luck in the NFL last year and the worst this year.

Pffffffffffffffffft.

So what the heck, here's a prediction. Grad's will do OK at QB, get at least 1 TD against the Steelers, and earn a back up spot next year.

this week's playbook will have about one page.

How is that any different than what we've seen all season?

It would be nice to know if Cribbs is a viable backup - if he is, that opens a slot for another player instead of carrying three QBs. Problem is, I don't know who we have that would be worth filling that slot.

What's the over under on Rucker and Harrison being involved this week?

The offense hasn't scored a TD in 5 games and Romeo's worried about Cribbs being available on special teams ?

That cartoon is hilarious! Chud and Romeo should draw up some wing T plays for harrison and Cribbs. That would be entertaining to watch! .......So far there hasn't been much entertainment value watching the Browns and to watch these Bums on defense who dont want to get there unifrom dirty sucks also!

The best thing that might come out of this is that the new coach will realize that Cribbs is a better RB option then a WR option. It is not against the law for RBs to catch the ball coming out of the backfield. So, no surprise that this FO and coaching staff has gotten it wrong making Cribbs a WR instead of a RB.

Get him off the coverage teams and get him involved in the offensive game plan.

Would you like to be a defensive coordinator looking at Cribbs in the "i" formation or standiong next to the QB in the shotgun and trying to figure out what they were going to do with him.

Man, how we squander talent and misuse players on this team.............unbelievable

I actually think that Cribbs should be a receiver. I do think that they use him wrong though. They should use him as a slash type of player or even a Randle - EL. They should run him on screens, reverses, and have him throw out of that same formation. Problem is that this coaching staff has no imagaination. When you have players that can make plays you find ways for getting the ball in their hands.

Cribbs should line up as Receiver, Rb, QB. He should be all over. The Defense should not have a clue what you are doing when he is in the game. That would be fun and effective I think.

We will see next year what happens. A new coaching staff might be more inventive. Would also like to see a more aggressive defense. But for that you need better LBs. So I am hoping that the Browns draft LBs in the first two rounds.

I have to laugh a little regarding the QB situation. In the offseason we were all going back and forth with keeping Quinn and DA, trading DA to get picks for him, back and forth. Some people questioned Savage's decision to keep DA, when his reasoning for keeping him was because he wanted another year with the same QBs to make evaluations AND he wanted the depth because of how many QBs historically get injured (He often quoted the number of different QBs that started games last year). Now here we are looking at our 4th string QB because of injuries.

Just dumb luck how that all worked out. He tried to stay prepared for the worst, but the worst was worse than anyone expected. DA's trade value plummets because of performance, Both DA and Quinn go down with injuries. . . so it's a loss-loss situation. . . when we all hoped for a win-win.

I think its interesting how Cribbs is getting 5+ yds a carry and defenses know he is going to run when he is behind center. He is that damn good, but seriously, I dont know how long thats going to last, they really need to let Cribbs throw the ball, he's thrown I think 2 all year and one IMO was a 40 yd. completion to Braylon (only no red flag was thrown).

I say start Gradkowski but give him and Cribbs and equal number of snaps.

It's the oline. Shaffer used to be at left tackle. Frye got battered to hell and back, and injured.

Fraley is a proud battler, but he has also struggled with certain guys...

Hadnot isn't much of a puller at guard, either, I don't think...

Anderson got the ball off quicker, and had a stronger arm, but later, they got wise to him too.

Because, Tucker was out, and Shaffer was at right tackle. Now, Shaffer has single-handedly

been the tackle that has been responsible for every qb on our roster being injured since

we got our Browns back.

As big as he is, he is often shoved right back into the qb, by smaller defensive players. Which, also, ruins

quick rollouts to the right, as well as runs to the right, as well as often ruining any kind of trick play possibility,

like and end round etc...

Cribbs is the only qb the Browns have, now, that is quick enough to avoid the rush, and get past Shaffer

before Shaffer gets run over, or run around.

bah.

he isn't mobile enough to pull as a guard.

The Browns MUST sign or draft a legit OT to take his place.

Hadnot is a decent run blocker but struggles at pass blocking. He is a natural center and just might end up there next year. Shaffer got really exposed this year with Tucker out. Many of the coaches have said that Tucker is the best lineman on the Browns. Shaffer has had help most of the year also with TEs and backs and still gets run over or around.

Steinbach has been hurt all year, to a point that most guys wouldn't be playing. He has knee, shoulder and back problems. Fraley has shown his age this year. Teams have rushed up the middle and Fraley just can't handle that anymore.

Last year we were fairly lucky that we stayed healthy most of the year. this year has been just the opposite. That's life in the NFL.

AMEN! I have wanted to see Cribbs at RB since LAST year...he is wasting away on special teams & would still be under utilized at WR. With his talents, he is IDEALLY suited to RB.

Let's hope this happens...at least a couple of us hope it happens.

I still think Cribbs should throw the ball once in a while, at least to keep defenses uneasy so they dont know if he's gonna run or pass.

Maybe we should try what Baltimore did when Troy threw to Flacco

Exactly! Cribbs can run elusively with speed & surprising power, catch passes, & throw the ball. Those talents equal a lot of different wrinkles in an offensive game plan.
