Urban Meyer stepping down at Florida

Urban Meyer is stepping down as football coach at Florida, the school's athletic director announced Wednesday.

"I fully grasp the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field," Meyer said.

A news conference was scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Meyer will coach his last game for Florida in the Outback Bowl against Penn State on January 1st in Tampa.

The Gators, who won two national championships and two Southeastern Conference titles under Meyer, had a disappointing season in 2010, going 7-5 (4-4 SEC).

A three-time national coach of the year, Meyer posted a 64-15 record in six seasons at Florida. He also coached at Utah and Bowling Green.

Any takers on when the accusations on recruiting violations come out? My bet is a week max. I think he takes the Denver job and reunites himself with St. Tebow.

haha, that's funny you wrote this cause i when i saw this all i thought was, he can finally be back with the love of his life Tim Tebow! But I've personally never cared for him that much, and put me in the grouping of people who think within the next year or two recruiting violations WILL be found over his reign.

Are you saying he will be Pete Carroll Jr.? This is why I don't buy the Gruden to Miami, Fla. U stories as in college you have to worry about so many more things than coaching football.

I am a Gator fan so this is obviously not good news to me.

But, I have 3 questions:

1. If Urban Meyer does in fact go to Denver, what happens to Orton and Quinn? Because you know if Meyer is running the show in Denver, Mr. Righteous will be the starter.

2. Do you honestly think the spread will work in the NFL? It works in collegiate football because it is focused on one thing and one thing only. Speed. The NFL is not like collegiate football, Tebow cannot and will not and does not bulldoze guys like he did in college and he is surely not the fastest man on the field.

3. Is Meyer leaving effective immediately or his he hanging around to coach the Outback Bowl? I will be attending the Outback Bowl on New Years' Day and I most definitely do not want to see us get our asses whooped by JoePa and Penn State.

urban meyer has put himself in prime position to take over for Brett Favre..

All he has to do now is come back, and we can have the yearly urban meyer watch

No, clearly that is not the case, bud. Meyer almost stepped down last year because of a life-threatening illness. Favre simply wanted and decided not to enter retirement because of his old age. There is clearly a difference.

Colt I know, but maybe ron zook will go back to floirda now?

eh, he would be OK, but not my first choice. Here is a list of UF's possible coaches.

1. Dan Mullen (Has already been offered the UF job. Won 2 National Championships as OC at Florida. Currently head coach at Miss. State)

2. Charlie Strong (Won 2 National Championships as Defensive Coordinator at Florida. Currently head coach at Louisville)

3. Mike Leach (All-time winningest coach at Texas Tech. Currently relaxing in Key West)

Florida has a strong program, it is certainly a loss but if they hire right they will be fine.

I am a miami hurricane fan and we haven't had a coach since butch davis.

it will be interesting to see which school gets there "guy"

Miami and Florida both want Leach, but Florida is clearly the better program at the moment. We will see, it should definitely be interesting.

I think Bob Stoops is the first choice.

Well, there is this reason: http://blog.newsok.com/berrytramel/2010/12...stoops-florida/

And I know you are an avid Gators follower, as am I, and we need someone that will run the spread. We need to get Brantley out if he cannot cooperate with the rest of the offense. You canot successfully run the spread with a pro-style QB.. We need to work with Trey Burton over the off-season and develop his arm, because he showed that he has the ability to run the option and the draw. If we mix in Jordan Reed a little bit and get the Pistol formation goin, (Remember, Burton lines up at QB, HB, and Slot Receiver, so he is very versatile) then I believe we can run some good reverses and double passes. We definitely have the personnel, now we have to use them to fit their style of play.
