kshutchins
In another thread, longhorn said he'd gladly take Carrot Top as a coach if it meant a division championship. I also read moans and groans about prospective coaches and their conservative styles. To me this begs the question in the topic title: Can conservative football be winning football? Would we care, or is winning enough? I'm not sure I can remember a winning team that was boring.

Absolutely, the WCO offense compared to a beast of a long ball thrower can be considered "boring" but it can win, absolutely. A great D without a great O can be a "boring" team and still win the SB. I think they went 3 games or so in a row where they won by strictly kicking field goals. Then again their defense was sick! Boring or not... JUST WIN BABY! longhorn
I think to get bored with winning you'd have to be exposed to a lot of it. I'm willing to take a chance on boredom if we can go undefeated 3-5 years in a row (or something like that).
DawgTracker
IF the browns had scored no more than 14 points all year and went 14-2 I would be happy. I enjoy great defense just as much as great offense. If the browns ran it 35 times a game and won I wouldn't care. If the browns passed it 35 times a game and won I wouldn't care. However I don't think many fans share my desire to JUST WIN BABY.
NewEraDawg
Boring is in the eye of the beholder . The brand of (offense-ive )football we have had displayed in Cleveland , has been WAY beyond boring in my vernacular . I want to see some LONG drives , capped with TOUCHDOWNS . Now there's a thought .
Nw220
Dont care about boring football just care about winning games plain and simple win, when the Patriots let go of Randy Moss everyone was in awe and they went back to basically underneath passing and simple football and look where has them you dont need to be sexy in order to win games just get it done
nickers
Im down with what NED said...I like long drives...I love the dynamics of the chess match...I like seeing a team that can dictate the flow of the game on offense and defense and the adjustments made during the course of the game... Gips
Boring conservative football can certainly be winning football but its still boring football nevertheless, that is if you can consider football boring..hehehehehe Conservative or particularly over-conservative football combined with a bland personality for coach is just bad football from a spectator view but can still equate to winning football! Wide open vertical football while never boring offensively may equate to not winning as much and bored fans from seeing their defense on the field so much... I think most of us prefer a balanced style with the natural ups and downs that come with a well played and well coached game...

Chicopee John
What's the most boring team you've ever seen win a championship? If you favor a team then winning trumps style, etc. IMHO. As a non-fan of either team, I remember the following Champions being 'boring'. My bet is their fans found them exciting: Baltimore Ravens NY Giants during the Ottis Anderson days Maybe some of the Steelers' teams. Just off the top of my head.................... Hoss
I don't think anyone who is a fan of the Cleveland Browns would care if they were boring and wore pink tutu's. Winning is winning. Question is can you build a team and win with no passing game? In this day and age, you have to pass the ball well and have a stud defense. Passing isn't boring. Oh sure we could talk all day about the Baltimore Ravens, but after mediocre years, they're knocking back on the door again with a QB who can pass. Would I take boring football and a winner? Of course. Is that realistically going to happen? I don't think so.
shepwrite
What he said, pretty much. Fans of "boring" teams don't find them boring. I think both the Steelers and Ravens play a lot of dull games... but when I'm watching teams I don't care about, I wanna be entertained, I guess. It's harder now to win boring, I think. Someone smart said it's tougher to sustain drives these days, which is actually why many defenses just keep the play in front of them and expect turnovers or penalties. And playing against all these turbo-powered pass offenses, you really can't run your way back from a two or three score deficit. Most short passing games are designed to make short throws into long gains, not to just throw 4-yard hooks. I think the WCO is a blast to watch, actually. If you favor a team then winning trumps style, etc. IMHO. As a non-fan of either team, I remember the following Champions being 'boring'. The reason I brought it up was all of the grumbling over various prospective coaches and how conservative (boring) their offenses were likely to be. It sounded to me like quite a few people care a lot about that sort of thing.

Now that they have a passing game, they've been to the playoffs three straight years. The Vikings were .500 and once a fringy playoff participant... then with Favre, they had a first round bye. The only way you can compete year after year without a serious quarterback and a serious passing game is if everybody else agrees to play that way, too. It sounded to me like quite a few people care a lot about that sort of thing. It is a cool thread and a great question. I don't want an offense that right off the bat is boring or conservative. However I have heard a few members talk about how our players were just plain poor ballers, and it was not Daboll's fault we were boring. Chicken or the Egg? nickers
What's the most boring team you've ever seen win a championship? the first Superbowl team of the Parcells era was rather bland,,,but to Parcells credit...he didnt fear taking chances on 4th down. Mark O
I wasn't bored watching us win 3-0 in Buffalo last season and that was about as bad a game as I've ever seen. Winning is winning....who cares how we get there.
