NFL Culture

I have only followed football closely since 1999. But this is it. This is the culture of the NFL. Teams like the Steelers, Ravens, and Patriots will always have success and will never have losing seasons ever again. Teams like the Browns, Bills, and Lions will always be at the bottom. They will always lose everything. I dont see any reason to think otherwise. The culture of the NFL will be this way forever. Screw rebuilding. We will always be in last place. I'm sick of it. But we will have to live with it till we die. The days of the 80's are gone. Forever.

I'm a believer that things come in cycles but yes certain teams will always be good, Steelers the main one. The Patriots will bomb when Belichick (sp?) or Brady leave. Just under 20 years ago it was the Bills who went to 4 straight SBs and the Dolphins also had a streak of winning divisional crowns. The Cowboys used to be great but got crappy but are heading back up again.

The main reason the Steelers are always a winning team is because they have solid leadership and ownership who have a solid set of values. That is what we have been missing since '99. Now we have that, Holmgren and Shurmer are on the same page and Jauron can really help our D. Everything takes time.

The day will come when we win the division and sweep the Steelers and Ravens during the regular season.

I hope your right. Because this is starting to effect my mental health.

Are you saying that the Steelers will always be good until Rooney dies or what?

The Pats, Steelers, and Ravens wont always dominate. Belichick and Brady wont always be around. The Steelers without Polyhairdo, Harrison, and Big gay would not be the same team. They will eventually fall, they just have good players/coaches right now. If the Browns had a boat load of stars like those teams then they would dominate.

When have the Steelers ever been as bad as us? Please share.

The lions are on an upward trend with smart drafting. They are not there yet because they have too many miles to travel to catch up with their divisions elite. But if they stick with their coach and the system they have a chance of doing it. Same goes with us. We are changing coaches too often to implement a system. And without a system we will not be able to compete. The Ravens, The Steelers all have a system. That system allows them to make clearer choices. We are too confused to acheive anything.

Lions fans suffer worse than us. They never ever even get a glimpse of success. Even Barry Sanders era wasnt amazing.

Face it, we will always lose.

i know you can't see it but it will be a long process and it needs to start with the city of Cleveland.....until the complete buffoons who run the city can get their act together the sports teams here will always struggle.................unless a great owner decides to take a flier and buy the Browns.

Nah its not the city. Its the NFL culture. The media wouldn't know what to do. The owners wouldn't know what to do. The players wouldn't know what to do...if the Browns were a winning team. I just can't see it ever happening again.

It has more to do with patience, vision and a plan.

Cleveland's playoff appearances: 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1980, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1994, 2002

Pittsburgh playoff appearances: 1947, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010

Before the 70's the Steelers were irrelevant, they've had more success recently. Due to the Browns becoming the Ravens and going 3 years without a team, but that dont erase the past.

Maybe you're just down now.....maybe you're drunk..........but if you want proof that you're wrong, just look at the drool that comes out of the media every time the Bengals win a few games!

Nope I am sober as a bird (Friday was another story). I am just done trying. As a fan this is exhausting. I am going to live with what we are given and just be thankful that we even have this franchise in the first place.

Really? Well go take a look at this- Super Bowl Teams now if you want to believe the City of Cleveland is cursed, that's another story.

Everything goes in cycles- in the last 10 years teams like the Rams, Cardinals, Panthers (they of first pick in the draft this year), and Titans have all played in a Super Bowl. The league is set up to ensure everyone has a chance- eventually. Last years winners (The Saints) were so bad back in the 60's their fans INVENTED wearing paper bags to games. Tampa was known as the Yuckaneers in the 70's and held the record for consecutive losses until the Lions broke it two years ago.

In fact, the Browns have been incredibly UNlucky to not have played in one. Had the Super Bowl started a few years earlier, the Browns would have played in (and won) a couple. They were an epic Elway drive, and a couple fluke plays away from playing in three in the 80's.

Our dear Steeler trolls hate to admit it, but Pittsburgh was monumentally lousy until Chuck Noll showed up in 1969. The Patriots were unremarkable until Bill Belichick and Tom Brady arrived. The 49ers won everything in sight when Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jerry Rice were playing for them. As to teams staying on top forever- well, that's a REAL long time. Baltimore's defense is starting to get old. The Colts will go in the toilet (guaranteed) if\when Peyton Manning gets hurt or retires. You do realize the Bears had a losing record last year right?

The reason the Browns have been bottom feeders the last ten years is-horrible drafting. It's the reason the Steelers have done so well of late- great drafting. BTW, the Super Bowl run Pittsburgh went on in the 70's was predicated on some incredible luck in the draft- and I'll go out on a limb and say it will NEVER happen again- drafting FOUR Hall of Fame players in ONE year.

ok, i've sat back long enough and watched people try to cheer you up and make you believe. now it's time for tough love.

first of all, let me say that i respect your opinion and usually like reading your posts. you're a smart guy and it shows. i like having you on this board.

that being said: stop bitching. i'm sick and tired of the "poor me" attitude that some browns fans have. so our team is bad and we struggle to win. so what? that doesn't mean that we have to stop believing in them. it doesn't mean that we need to give up on them. crying about how we will never make it won't solve anything. i do believe that we will make it and when we do it will be glorious. this poor me crap needs to end now amongst browns fans. the negativity is sickening.

At times I feel the same way. I've used the analogy many times that watching this team is like watching the movie "Ground Hog Day." Same shit over and over! I'll bet there will be yet another "QB controversy" this year. It really makes you wonder if the NFL is truly the parity that they profess. At any rate, I'm still a fan, and will remain hopeful, but it is quite frustrating. I hope that they finally got this thing right. I'm willing to be patient with the progress. But I need to see consistent progress. I want to see our record improve EVERY year! None of this moral victory bullshit! I want our record to start showing the improvement in terms of more Ws than Ls!

THe thing about the Steelers''..when they have a bad year...it's 8-8 or 9-7..then they bounce back to 10-6 then 12-4..

I can't remebr when they had a below 500 season??..

A .500 season for the Browns is worth getting a Boner on for

Are you that young? Or just that dumb? Are you out of your Pampers? The Steelers were 6-10 in 2003. Were you bothering to watch football then or are you only like just now 10 or 12 years old.

The Browns were 10-6 just 3 years ago. Again, were you not alive and living in America?

On another thread you remarked something about "ancient history". Apparently, ancient history to you is anything over 2-3 years ago.

Why would you be a fan if you don't derive fun from it? No one forces you to be a fan. If it's going to depress you, spend your time somewhere else for goodness sake.

It could be worse, a lot worse. You could be a Steeler fan, married to your first cousin, and your mom could be pregnant by your son. Ray Stevens wrote this song about Steeler fans.

Cleveland continues on a downward spiral because there a stability issues..Lets fix it quick..5 coaches in 10 years,,anew savior who by the way will bail if a better opportunity arises..just my gut feeling..NE, Pittsburgh..they don't run coaches off every 24 months..They give them time..not here though..pathetic really and now we start over...again and again and again..GROUND HOG DAY..at least Bill Murray is funny...The Browns are not funny..just the laughing stock..depressing

This board is overrun by kids anymore. Christ, Bottlegate to them was like an ancient memory and to you and I it was like yesterday.

Not impressed. Some of these threads look like dialogue from the movie 'Bad Boys' with Sean Penn.

Here is a nice link to the Steelers records over the years. Warning: Please advise the Steeler fans on the board to not look any lower 1971.

Thanks for all of your opinions. It was a depressing night but I am over it.

Firstly, I am 20 and an adult just like the most of you. I was at bottlegate and the spetrum of human brain activity and fuction ranges from age 11 to age 20, so the perception of thought is broader, producing a realm of lost time. Hence why a 20 year old believes that when they were 11, it was ancient history.

Secondly, I need to ask you old timers something. When you rooted for the Browns in the 1960's they were on fire. Then in the 1970's everything went to hell, like it has in the 2000's. Before the Brian Sipe days, did you have this same thought process? Were there different factors? Otherwise, this is the lowest point in Cleveland Browns franchise history.

Thirdly, don't tell me I can't be a fan. I'm gonna bitch if I want to bitch. Thats the beauty of it. So shut the hell up.

Thanks :)

It's when the fans stop bitching, and become apathetic. That's the problem! And I really hope that apathy isn't setting in like it has with the Indians, and soon the Cavs. I feel for ya! I have a 7 year old who has only seen one winning season with the Browns (2007). I at least can hang my hat on the 80s teams, as they were in the mix as a contender, but just couldn't quite take that next step. The only thing I can preach to him right now is loyalty to his hometown, and why it's important to stick with your home teams.

Exactly. I feel like I have it worse than others sometimes because all I have known is failure. At least the elder group has tasted success.

Thank you a ton young man, this totally made my point.

Not that it matters, this board looks like a juvenile detention hall anymore......and I am only 42 and pretty damn cool if I must say :)
