From the NY Daily News:

Browns (and maybe others) want to talk to Spags

The bye week is just a few hours old and already teams appear to be lining up to speak with Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

According to an NFL source, the Cleveland Browns plan to contact the Giants and request to interview Spagnuolo this week about their newly created head coaching vacancy. And the Jets and Lions might be in line right behind them.

It’s not clear if the Browns - who fired GM Phil Savage and coach Romeo Crennel today — have already requested permission. A spokesman for the Giants said they would not be confirming or denying any inquiries they receive this week.

According to NFL rules, teams searching for a new coach are allowed to interview assistant coaches on playoff teams during their bye week (or next week for those teams without a bye). So far there are five openings, including the Browns, the Jets (who fired coach Eric Mangini today), and the Lions (who fired coach Rod Marinelli).

There are also currently openings in St. Louis and Oakland, where those teams had interim coaches for the latter half of the NFL season. So far, Spagnuolo has not yet been mentioned as a candidate for either of those two.

Spagnuolo, of course, figures to be one of the hottest names on the coaching carousel this offseason. He nearly became the Washington Redskins head coach last offseason, but turned down the job and re-signed with the Giants at the hefty price of $2 million per season.

The Giants are not expected to block Spagnuolo from interviewing anywhere he chooses to interview this week.

The problem with the Jets is that they've brought in a lot of 3-4 personnel. Bringing Spags in & switching to a 4-3 may actually set their defense back.

Money talks, bullshit walks. If Detroit paid more then we or the Jets were, then he would be the coach.

The Jets are a team built to win now. They have six 30 year old+ starters on offense, and they've rebuilt their defense with 3-4 players. Kris Jenkins has had a Shaun Rogers-like reemergence as a 3-4 NT, and they've spent a lot of $ and picks on 3-4 linebackers, bringing in David Harris, Calvin Pace, and (uber-bust) Vernon Gholston.

If they switch to a 4-3, they'll have to retool their defense, bringing in smaller, more athletic linebackers and drafting the DE's Spagnuolo's rush scheme requires. By the time that's set up, their stars on offense will have moved on or retired.

Long term, I'm sure a Spagnuolo-led D will be pretty sweet. But in the short run, there could be a pretty bumpy adjustment period.
