Doubt a team is gonna snag him for more than $3.25 million. Can't believe we used our tag on a kicker but Phil deserves it.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have franchised veteran kicker Phil Dawson, a league source said.

Dawson, who has been seeking a new contract for several years, is expected to make about $3.25 million, the franchise amount for kickers.

Dawson, who made $1 million a year under his previous contract, sold his house in Westlake and didn't expect to be back with the Browns. He can continue to negotiate a long-term deal with the Browns depending on what happens with the new collective bargaining agreement.

A 13-year veteran, Dawson passed Hall of Famer Lou Groza (234) for first place on the team's all-time field goal list in 2010.

Dawson converted all 28 extra points in 2010 and 23 of 28 field goals with a long of 48. He's also third in most points scored by a Browns player with 1,063, trailing Groza and Don Cockroft.

Dawson is the only player on which the Browns have used the franchise tag.

I love Dawson and I have been glad that he has remained on our team but this is a ridiculous move. Sign the man for $2 mil. Last year was not a good year for Dawson and we reward him with this salary? This makes me excited to see what other stupid moves this braintrust will make next. Maybe it will be a right tackle as the first pick in the draft. The sounds about right.

I am really hoping that Holmgren isn't an idiot. Because when an idiot surrounds himself with other idiots who are more like him (SEE RECENT HIRES) idiocy prevails.

only the Browns would franchise a kicker who is over the hill and on the decline. Holmgren is a genius!

Big money for a kicker who will get the average of the top 5 kickers when he is ranked 17th out of 32 with his peers.

Where is this guy ranked??

It must suck that even the Browns have a better kicker than you idiots.

So that gives us the advantage at TE, RB, P, KR, CB, and now K

oh well at least he only missed that fg by about 50 yards to the left...blame the wind right? in the dome? makes sense...

Who else were they going to tag?

I don't know that I'd consider a 13 year veteran kicker to be on the downside of their career. Many kickers last forever.

Lou Groza, greatest kicker of all-time lasted 21 years. To me kicking is not as rough as other positions. Not saying it isn't as important, just that they aren't physically active as much. Keep the leg healthy and stay in shape. They don't need to worry about getting hit like other positions, and the running is a minimum. He doesn't seem to be struggling, and I'd take Phil over a rookie any day...

They would never sign a GOOD kicker...

wide left

Whats gonna be funny is watching Mike Wallace bolt pittspuke for big money when his contract runs up cuz I highly doubt the rooneys will show it to him.

oh great we have an ordinary kicker at the end of his career as our franchise player,,,,,,,,,,why do I think this is not good news

Because you're a Steeler fan?

Ordinary? Buy a CLUE Rich. Dawson has moved into the top 50 all time points scored (#43 to be exact). He's in the TOP 10 career field goal accuracy- ahead of Adam Vinaterri I may add. This is one time I'll say the guy deserves every damn cent.

And as others have said, great kickers can last 20 years or so. Seven of the top ten guys in most games played were kickers (Morten Anderson tops the list) my dear friend. Dawson passes Don Cockroft this year in points scored- and if the Browns finally start playing decent- he has a legit shot at topping Lou Groza down the road.

In fact (regardless of who he plays for) me and Zombo (I hope) will allow you redemption on the Willie Green- Clarett bet. Buck for every point over under career on Dawson vs. Groza. Right now, that's $545 IOU. Seasonal updates will be prominently posted.

He has not been an ordinary kicker, he has been an outstanding kicker. And remember, he is a KICKER. He is "only" 36. That might be old for most other football players, but with a kicker he could have another good 5 years or more. Half the active kickers in the NFL are probably his age.

Dawson might be good and produce but tagging him as untouchable with a $3M price tag seems weird. The Steelers would never make a buffoonish move like that.

Funny stuff from Mike Holmgren.

Giving him 3 million doesn't bother me. The only thing that might be bothersome about it is that it counts against the team's salary cap. In that regard it may seem like a bit much as it could potentially diminish the amount you could spend at other positions.

Look at the ages. Dawson could have probably been higher on this list with a better offensive team around him all these years, but he is by no means over the hill as a kicker.

Gip, is there a way to find out his stats on kicks over 40 yards?

I can't believe I'm saying this but, I agree with you.

He's a kicker! New England even let Vinateri walk. Why? Because he's a kicker.

New england did it in 05 with vinatieri then drafted Gostkowski the following year.

I think that worked out well for them.

Maybe we aren't use to having management that think ahead.

I'm trying not to get carried away this soon into the offseason but I just haven't liked anything they have done since the season ended. Phil is a kicker. Great guy, good kicker, but he's a kicker. There is no need to franchise him unless they are just doing him a personal favor for enduring this crap his entire career. I'm okay with that. But as a football move on it's own, it makes no sense.
