SJ_Browns
I saw this on another board and It's slow so I figured I would just post it. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/...ll-these-years/ Before Bruce Arians found his final job in football with the Steelers, he was the offensive coordinator of the division rival Browns. Arians was on the wrong side of the January, 2003 Browns-Steelers playoff shootout (Tommy Maddox! Kelly Holcomb!) and made it clear Tuesday he’s not a fan of former Browns coach Butch Davis. “Our head coach lost the game,” Arians said. “He called off the dogs on defense. You just don’t let Tommy Maddox sit there and go against a prevent defense. He basically fired [defensive coordinator] Foge Fazio at halftime. Foge was blitzing. We had them beat. They knew we had them beat.” Arians says Davis took over the playcalling at halftime and insisted the team play his prevent defense. “I don’t care what anyone says. I was on that sideline,” Arians said. At this point, you may be wondering why I’m writing about this nine years later. I’m not really sure, other than I thought it was hilarious and MDS thought it was postworthy. Plus, that was an underrated game on a memorable day for football fans back in ’03. (The Trey Junkin botched snap Giants-49ers game was later that day.) The end to the story for Arians, of course, was a happy one. He says he still hears about a key drop Dennis Northcutt had late in the game. “Hines [Ward] brings it up all the time. ‘If [Dennis] Northcutt catches that ball, you might be a head coach right now.’” Arians recalled. “But I wouldn’t have all these Super Bowl rings.”
SJ_Browns
this comes as no suprise to me. butch was a dirty dog for throwing foge under the bus and firing him for something he didn't do. i still can't stand butch for all the crap he did. slowly, but surely he ran this team into the ground. Kinda funny here in NC watching Butch botch up the Tarheels. I turned against Butch that day ............got massacred for wanting him gone after he blew that game and got massacred again when he took unless Winless and passed on Ben and gave up a second round draft choice and massacred until he finally got fired. NOT IN ANY WAY A COMPETENT GAME DAY COACH........great BS and then NOthing

SJ_Browns
edit: butch davis is good at failing in the nfl and he's excellent at spin talk (those aren't good qualities to be known for ). they bust their guts, blah blah blah, if you take back those 3 runs jamal lewis only had 65 yds, blah blah blah, strain your guts, blah blah blah, these guys spilled their guts out today, blah blah blah. butch was a freaking joke of a nfl coach. no one liked butch and his dictator for life way of running his team along with his moronic style of football. plus butch ran away the browns alumni with his messed up ways. nickers
I heard a story about Butch and AL Lerner on Trivisanno one day...Butch was such a control freak...He wanted to dictate how the lettering of the Browns name was placed on the field...AL Lerner basically told him to "STFU and coach the team" I just thought that was hilariouse and summed up Butchie...Lolz...only in Cleveland... DieHardBrownsFan
What's really funny is that he is the only coach to take us to the playoffs (since 1999).
vdogrowz
And believe it or not Bill Belichick was the last Browns coach to win a playoff game
The Gipper
Yes, we all saw that Butch went into the prevent defense in the third quarter, but the real question really was Why? the Browns had a 17 point lead and had Maddox running scared. Why call off the dogs? Was he really just trying to be so conservative? Was he playing not to lose....but yet lost anyway? And I agree that Butch could have been the best coach we had, so why go through all the control freak machinations? Why engage in bizarre behavior like he did. Maybe he really was having panic attacks and it led him to not be able to think clearly.
Mr. T
What's really funny is that he is the only coach to take us to the playoffs (since 1999). Then he blamed all the veteran players for the loss and released them. Who remembers Butchy blowing his whole draft to move up one slot for k2? nickers
Butch was a tard...I guess the power he assumed was just more than he could handle...I could never understand Pete Garcia in all this...when Butch drafted who he wanted anyway...stupid. Squintz
“Hines [Ward] brings it up all the time. ‘If [Dennis] Northcutt catches that ball, you might be a head coach right now.’” Arians recalled. “But I wouldn’t have all these Super Bowl rings.” THIS is what I found to be the funniest and best part of the article. Did anyone else catch this part? I mean, he basically is stating that he would have not been good enough as a HC to win a Super Bowl. He's a piece of crap who landed in a lucky situation. He has to rely on others for his success. A-hole

A-hole exactly. and people are going to down butch davis? GTFO didn't arians come from the coughlin run, run, pass, punt school of offensive football? i don't know who's benefited more from the steeler's front office smarts, arians or tomlin. with that talent daboll would have made arians look like a choir boy in a strip club.
