INDIANAPOLIS -- Mohamed Massaquoi thinks his good friend and former Georgia teammate A.J. Green is the top receiver in the draft, despite a sizzling combine workout on Sunday by Alabama's Julio Jones.

"I'm not up on all the combine numbers yet, but I think A.J. is the best receiver in this draft," said the Browns' third-year receiver. "He's got phenomenal hands, he runs well and he's physical. He's got a tremendous body of work at Georgia. If you put all of that up against anybody, I think A.J. would come out on top."

Green, one of the players the Browns are considering with the sixth pick of the first round, got some competition Sunday from Jones, who produced the combine's workout of the day.

Widely regarded as the second-best wideout, Jones (6-4, 220) recorded a 4.39 in the 40, 11'3" in the broad jump and 38.5 inches in the vertical jump. His broad jump was two inches away from the combine record.

For comparison's sake, Green (6-4, 211) ran 4.48 in the 40, an above-average 10 feet, 6 inches in the broad jump and had a 34.5-inch vertical jump. Teams were hoping to see Green get his 40 time below 4.5 seconds, and his broad jump exceeded last year's average at the combine by more than six inches.

"I feel I had a pretty good day," Green told NFL Network after the workout. "I'm happy with my performance. I feel like I did my best."

During his media interview on Friday, Green credited Massaquoi, his friend and mentor, with helping him get to this point. The two spent one year together at Georgia, when Green was a freshman in 2008.

"My freshman year he took me under his wing and showed me the ropes," said Green, who caught 56 passes for 963 yards and eight TDs in his first year with the Bulldogs. "He's been my mentor since I stepped foot onto Georgia's campus, and I turn to him for advice. When I'm talking to Mo, we don't really talk football. He doesn't like to talk football unless I ask him a question or something."

But they've talked enough shop to know they'd love to be playing in Cleveland. The Browns have made it clear that Green is on their radar, along with the top defensive linemen and cornerback Patrick Peterson.

"It would be nice to play with him," said Green, whose 23 TDs are second in Georgia history.

Massaquoi describes their friendship as a "big brother, little brother relationship. We clicked so well right from the start and we've remained close."

Green was suspended four games at the start of the 2010 season for selling his 2009 Independence Bowl jersey to an agent for $1,000, but Massaquoi said teams should not be concerned.

"Anyone who gets a chance to sit down and talk to A.J. will find out that his character is off the charts," said Massaquoi. "It was an unfortunate mistake, he learned from it, put it behind him and moved on. A.J. will never give a team anything it has to worry about."

Massaquoi said Green's stellar hands are what sets him apart.

"He was on a juggling team when he was younger and I'm sure that's one of the reasons why he's got such good hand-eye coordination," said Massaquoi.

New coach Pat Shurmur, who will also serve as offensive coordinator, said Green could fit the bill for the Browns. Some mock drafts have him going higher. Pro Football Weekly had him being selected fourth by the Bengals.

"Explosive players on offense I think are what you're looking for," Shurmur said Friday here. "Obviously, he fits in that explosive-player category."

While some teams might hesitate to take a receiver that high in the draft, Shurmur said he wouldn't hesitate to pick Green.

"As far as picking guys high at certain positions, I don't think that's an issue at receiver," Shurmur said. "I think if you can find a great player, and he's at the spot where you're willing to pick him, let's do it."

The NFL Network's Mike Mayock said Green would make sense for the Browns despite the fact he doesn't usually favor picking receivers in the top 10.

"You've got a young quarterback [in Colt McCoy] and you don't have a lot of playmaking wide receivers," he said on a conference call. I think A.J. Green becomes very, very legitimate in that slot. But it depends on which one of these defensive players slips through to number six."

INDIANAPOLIS, IN---Former Louisiana State University cornerback Patrick Peterson has dreamed about playing in the National Football League for a very long time, but just how long has football been in his life?

“Since I came out the womb,” Peterson said with a smile Sunday afternoon during the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine. “My dad has always been teaching me all the little things to help me be the best player that I could be. My dad was always my football coach throughout high school and little league, unfortunately, not in college, but my dad, he has his own speed company, which is called World Class Speed.

“He was always a football coach,” he added. “He saw me getting ready to take that next step, so he’s been training me my whole life. He just came up with the idea of training me for this, this moment because my dad knows my body best. He knows what I like to do, what I’m lacking in and need to improve in as well.”

In three years at LSU, Peterson recorded 135 tackles, 22 pass break-ups and seven interceptions. He started 30 of 39 games and scored touchdowns in three different ways, on punt returns, an interception and after a blocked field goal.

Peterson had a final year of eligibility left at LSU, but decided to forgo that for an opportunity to play in the NFL. His reasoning for leaving college early was simple.

“I believe I achieved all of the goals that I went to LSU for, which was to win the Jim Thorpe Award, the Bednarik Award and push a run for the Heisman, but unfortunately, Cam Newton won it,” he said. “I believe I left LSU in good hands with the great secondary guys that they’ve got there and I wanted to take my game to the next level and that’s to pursue an NFL career.”

Peterson was not overconfident in the Sunday afternoon press conference, but did talk about what his strengths are on the field.

“I’d probably say my ball skills, toughness, I can support the run. I’m an all-around cornerback and that’s what I wanted coming out of college,” he said. “I’m definitely going to continue that trend going into the NFL.

“I’m very comfortable playing press-man because that’s pretty much all I was taught coming out of college,” added Peterson. “The aggressive style that we play at LSU, we always want to get after receivers. We don’t want those guys to get the best of us because most receivers don’t like the press. With Coach (Ron) Cooper, if it’s time to make a play or time to get off the field, he’s definitely putting both corners in press.”

RETURNING TO FORM

Peterson was not just a cornerback back at LSU. He returned both kicks and punts. He averaged 29.1 yards on 32 kickoff returns and 16.1 yards-per-punt return with the two touchdowns as a junior in 2010.

“I’m hard to tackle. I won’t come down on one shot, but these guys are definitely bigger and faster in the NFL,” he said. “That’s the main reason why I put on a little bit more weight. My strength and conditioning coach, Coach Tommy Moffitt, wanted me to put more muscle on, more muscle mass and that’s what I did. As you can see, I wasn’t going down on one tackle.”

CHANGING SIDES

Nebraska’s Prince Amukamara is a versatile athlete, but just how versatile is he?

Well, he started his collegiate career as an offensive player, but was moved to defense by Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini. It has worked out thus far for Amukamara, who is projected to be one of the top two cornerbacks in the 2011 NFL Draft class.

“It definitely wasn’t my decision,” Amukamara said. “I went to Nebraska and was told I was going to play running back. You know how it is in college. I ended up playing DB and I was kind of switched, but I trusted Coach Pelini. He said DB would be the best fit for me and I trusted him.”

Wow. Miller may be top five stuff, but Wilson is also a great size, with greater speed.

Very interesting...

***************************

Illinois ILB Martez Wilson ran the fastest forty time among linebackers at the Scouting Combine, registering an official 4.49.

Unofficially, he was clocked as fast as 4.44. "He's just blowing it up athletically," said NFL Network's Mike Mayock. Wilson was a bit of a surprise as an underclassman entrant into the draft, but it appears he's plenty ready. After a monster fourth-year junior season, the 6-foot-4, 250-pound inside linebacker is proving to be a physical freak. He's put his name into the mix for late first-round consideration.

IMHO, the "measurables" at the Combine are over rated. Sure, they can help (or devastate) someone like Quinn, who missed a year or the small school guys. Too often, a player who had fantastic, or so-so "on field" production over a full season (or more) overlooked & too much importance placed on the Combine results, which many of these guys prepped specifically for.

To me, the most important parts of the Combine are the interviews, testing, & how the players react to their failures, shortcomings, & other players. In other words, we should already know what they can do during games with pads on, but what goes on "inside" is important too.

Just my thoughts.

Stephen Paea DT-Orgeon St.

Sets NFL Combine Bench Press Record with 49 Reps

My feeling is that the Bench Press statistic is about as revealing as the "Airplane pull" statistic. If I am not mistaken none of the bench press leaders at the combines over the years have amounted to squat.

Right- teams figured out combine results are just one part of the puzzle. There have been numerous "workout warrior" monumental busts- and guys that didn't test well turning into perennial all-pros. Ray Lewis is exhibit 1A- his 40 time was supposedly "too slow" & remember the concern about Joe Hayden's speed last year? Turns out Joe is plenty fast enough. We're looking for football players, not track stars. Renaldo Nehemiah supposedly ran a sub 4.2, but what good is that if you can't run a route, or catch the ball?

If the guy looks good on film, that's way more important- and again- teams are starting to look at the 10 yard split for defensive & offensive linemen- quickness out of the blocks- those fat guys aren't running 40 yards on every play.

Yeah Von Miller and Patrick Peterson are both gonna be gone by the time we pick at #6, they put up impressive numbers

Now, there are 2 examples of guys with stellar game production...couple that with outstanding Combine #s & their stock will jump, as will their draft position.

It's going to get real interesting.

The top 10 has some great talent. At 6 we are sitting pretty good for getting a d lineman.

I could see Peterson going as high as #2 now. His in-game production + combine numbers were crazy.

Ah, whatta pipedream it would be if he dropped to us now

Yeah i defentily feel there is no way Peterson or Miller will make it to us now, and i believe they are the two best players in this draft along with Green, or at least the safest picks out there...Peterson is this years Suh

i've been seeing reports on espn (yesterday and today) that carson palmer is at it again. he says he has money in the bank and would play for the love of the game, just not in cinci. his status could possibly affect who will be available at #6 and help the browns out.

Means.... Unless Mike Brown is a total idiot somebody's going to take a quarterback before the Browns draft.

No dont worry about that man, seeing as that it would affect the player the bengals would select at #4 i think it belongs in this thread, if Palmer is on his way out...Im praying they dont take Green and decide to go with a QB instead. They still may take there best player on the board which still may be AJ Green, im just really hoping someway he falls to us

Seriously, sounds awful, but i'm kind of over AJ Green in hopes that we get Patrick Peterson. The guy is as sure a thing as i've ever seen a cornerback (thank god those stupid safety switch rumors were put to rest). I've now put him ahead of AJ Green on my list.

My new WR crush (who I actually think is better than AJ Green or Julio) next year is Alshon Jeffrey :D

I'm hoping right now we either get Peterson. But in all honesty, AJ Green is a great consolation prize.
