From ESPN

Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who rejected a chance to become head coach of the Browns last weekend, is not going to interview for the head coaching position of the New York Jets, according to multiple sources.

Cowher, according to a source, has been contacted by the Jets. Although he is interested in the Jets job, he told the team he would not be a candidate because he would like to bring in his own personnel director. Jets owner Woody Johnson plans to keep Mike Tannenbaum as his general manager after firing Eric Mangini as head coach Monday.

With Tannenbaum as the general manager, Cowher is willing to pass on the Jets opportunity, stay in broadcasting for another year and wait to return to coaching in 2010.

Cowher has told friends the Jets job interested him for several reasons. First, Cowher would love to coach in the New York market. Second, two of his daughters are either going to school or working in the New York-New Jersey area.

Cowher does plan to coach in 2010. In 2009, though, he was only willing to return if every situation was right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge.

Last weekend, Cowher met with Browns owner Randy Lerner, who asked him what it would take financially for him to be the Browns head coach. Having a close relationship with the Rooney family in Pittsburgh and still wanting more time with the family, Cowher didn't give Lerner a price, and said no.

Cowher recently extended his contract with CBS for another season.

According to PFT, the deal-breaker was Woody Johnson's refusal to fire their GM & give Cowher full control.

Were it not for that, Cowher may have actually taken the job.

No problem - apparently, Florio's just citing the ESPN report that Stan mentioned.

Could have been a convenient out for Cowher to blame it on the owner not giving him full control. But if the Jets job isn't good enough, which one will be?

I think Cowher is just puttng out feelers just to see what the market would garner to him...I think he really means it when he says he wont coach until next year...I could be wrong because of the jobs availabe the JETS certainly look the most attractive and the Jets.If all was standing in the way was keeping Tannenbaum then theyre stupid,,,

They are going to meet and Tannenbaun said he would have no problem sharing responsibility. It may not work out, but I think Tannenbaun might believe he is gone or moved out of the football operations of the team if Cowher says yes.

Jets will interview Spagnoula this week......................................

Either Cowher is screwing with the media or the media is just trying to dig up a story. Either case, I hope he stays at CBS. His story is getting tired.......................................................

Had an interesting conversation with a friend tonight in Charlotte area. Subject was Cowher and future plans.

Thought process was that Cox might not be back in Charlotte next year if Charlotte had a year like last year. Now that they're doing well, things have settled a bit and Cox is home free for a while. Next year or two, should the Panthers not do well or Cox simply want out, Charlotte becomes Cowhers opportunity. He likes Raleigh and NC area, as stated in reasons to waive Cleveland and NY and stay out of coaching for now. When Cox leaves, Charlotte is the prime for Cowher - JUST LIKE PITTSBURGH WAS - proven team, good opportunity, lots to chase where he wants. Cowher will sit tight another year at least and wait to hear fom Charlotte after Cox and Jake Delhome drop the ball and then make the play to live his style in NC and coach again, in NC, the Panthers.

Makes a heck of lot of sense, so count this guy out for anybody this year.

Cowher issue closed for 2009. Let's ALL move on.

By the way, thanks to forum staff for closing issue and settimng straight the post on 'Cowher to Jets' by Steelers fan.

Did you mean to call "Fox" ... "Cox"?
