WebsterSlaughter Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 Drafting Brandon Weeden at #22 was a desperate move, but not necessarily a bad one. The front office is very aware that having McCoy start another year would have cost them their jobs. Now that that H&H have their guy, Brandon Weeden, in place, Randy Lerner is obligated to give them at least 2 more years to see if their plan works. H&H can now show Lerner and the fans of Cleveland that there is a plan in place. Whether that plan works or not remains to be seen.
choco Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 could be. or, they didn't want to watch colt another year, much like most fans.
The Gipper Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 could be. or, they didn't want to watch colt another year, much like most fans. More likely what he said. A possible CYA move. There is no doubt some element to that there...even if they didn't want to continue with Colt.
Hunt Daddy Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 Everyone has a damn conspiracy theory for how H and H are terrible and are getting lucky. Maybe they just know what they're doing and know what they want? First two drafts were focused on fixing the defense. Guess what? Our defense was ranked 5th in the league. It hurt our offense because no high picks had been used to help the O. Now we have two picks for offense with a potential for up to 4 picks geared toward the offense after tonight. Our offense will be leaps and bounds better than it was. We probably won't be a phenomenal team this year, but the foundation is there. We WILL be a contender SOON and for a very long time.

I do think that Heckert knows what he is doing. (not sure yet about Holmgren or Shurmur) It is one of the reasons that I am more or less OK with the BW acquisition.
thenew23 Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 Weeden beat Luck, Griffin, and Tannehill last year. If he wasn't 28, he wouldn't have been there at 22. He's good. At worst, he's only a little better than McCoy.
slowburn Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 The gulf between H&H and Colt was wider that i perceived. The kids gee whiz personality endeared him more to some fans more so than his abyssmal record against division foes. He was given ample opportunity to show whether he had the right stuff and could not pull it off. The Browns will do him a favor by cutting him loose.

We had an inept offensive coaching arrangement which contributed to 90% of this teams woes...and yes, they had some injuries and a dearth of talent....at most offensive positions. No RB, no WR, TEs played so-so. Colt wasn't the greatest....but he was far from being this team's biggest problem. All I can say is that: A. Weeden must produce immediately and B. moreso, Shurmur must produce with Weeden immediately. You took a guy who is old enough to be a 5 year veteran, so he must play like a 5 year veteran. I happen to think that the guy may very well be capable of handling that situation, left to his own devices. Problem is, he is playing with Shurmur's devices. I am far less confident in those.
WebsterSlaughter Posted April 27, 2012 Author Report Posted April 27, 2012 I think it obvious that H&H didn't think Colt had the arm to make any of the throws in the offense. By comparison, I think Weeden has the 2nd best arm in the draft. Ideally you want your franchise QB to be able to play 10 strong years, but H&H will be happy with 5 good years from Weeden. If Weeden works out, they can always draft a young QB later when Weeden is 33 years old, and let tha tQB develop behind Weeden.

I agree partially, they played Cleveland Browns politics for two years drafting slugs to block or rush instead of studs to score points, McCoy was not the major problem, the garbage around him was, Hopefully, those geniuses are understanding you have to score to win I feel sorry for Colt, he was screwed by being forced to play with garbage and now is about to be thrown under the bus
bk74 Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 It is hard to say that Colt had ample time to show what he has in one full season. When you lead the league in dropped passes it has to be more then just the QB. Colt wasn't perfect by no means but considering it was his first full year as a starter and no off season to speak of I thought he handle it pretty well. It seems to me that he is just the scapegoat right now

I agree. Weeden has to come in produce and Shumur has got to start living up to his role as an offensive minded coach. Shumur won't have any excuses if the offense continues to sputter. Actually sputtering would be an upgrade.
USFBrown Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 Yes colt had shit to work with and an enept coach. He wasn't the biggest problem but he had his time to show what he could do. Weeden has a bigger arm and his accuracy is good. He's a better fit for an AFCN team. The browns maybe shouldn't have said as much as they did to Colt but what are they gonna say? We may want to keep you if the draft doesn't work out. Qb is the toughest position and you can't take things personal. Its a business. Best of luck colt.

He was thrown in the fire his rookie year, was handcuffed last year by Shumur, dealt with the most drops in the league, was jerked around all offseason and finally lied to and left for dead. Regardless of what we make think about his abilities he didn't deserve the treatment he got. I'd love to keep him as a backup but if the FO has any respect for the kid they'll trade or release him so he can start his career somewhere else.
