Sosban Posted May 23, 2012 Report Posted May 23, 2012 Hey guys from Wales which is a country in the UK and im a Browns fan, been following the NFL for some years and love the rivalries and tough football that is played in the AFC North, plus i like to root for the underdog! Anyway planning a short trip in 2013 to watch a game, say a 4-5 day trip, as I have fixed hols (last week of October and 2 weeks over Christmas) I was wondering if there was anybody on here that has been out to cleveland from the UK to watch a game? What was it like? Is a 4-5 day trip ok to do? As in not a wasted journey to come all the way over to the States for that amount of time. Can you fly directly from the UK to Cleveland? Thanks in advance guys. PS any other things a new fan should know about the Browns please let me know.

We have several from the UK who join us....Howie and Gareth are from the Cotswalds area in GB, and Keith is from Scotland. They can fill you in on the details you seek. I am sure when they see this they will chime in. As for air flights, Cleveland in a Int. airport, though I don't know if you can fly direct from Heathrow or wherever, or if you have to make a connection out of JFK in NYC. I assume JFK would be your connector and not somewhere like Atlanta that hubs a ton of pond jumping international traffic. Most of that heads west to California/Vegas, or south to Florida or New Orleans.

Thanks in advance guys. PS any other things a new fan should know about the Browns please let me know. As Ballpeen says, there are a few of us who have ventured over from the UK, I have been over for at least one Game for the last 7 years. Cheapest would be flying from London, Gatwick used to do a Direct Flight but don't believe it is still in operation. If you look for flights Via Newark they will usually get you in late Afternoon. Which gives you time to sort yourself out and not waste an evening when on a short trip, And if you keep in contact with us sociable lot a 4 or 5 day trip will soon be filled with things for you to do if you cant come up with things yourself. But seeing as how it would be over a long weekend, Cleveland is a pretty decent City to have fun in, especially if your coming to watch the Browns. Downtown is better for Hotels bit more expensive but good walking distance to stagger back from the Bars. 5 Day trip will likely cost you around £1000. Problem you will have though with your set dates is if there will be a game on over those periods in Cleveland, Schedule would come out round mid April, so still plenty of to to arrange things. Most important of all the guys from the Browns Board are the most welcoming ppl you will ever meet, so it would be a Trip you would remember for sure
baybrownsfan Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 You should also hit Cedar Point if you are coming in. Best amusement park in the world bar none.
sisky fringo Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 the word is out...THE BROWNIES ARE A COMIN'!!!
hoorta Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 You should also hit Cedar Point if you are coming in. Best amusement park in the world bar none. Read Carefully, my friend- last week October- Christmas. Yes, Howie, G-man, and Keith can give you all the info you need. PM Atenears or Roach when you have an idea you're coming in- we'll roll out the Red Carped for ya. Rock & Roll HOF, or the Pro Football HOF would be options. Artsy- crafty stuff would be the Cleveland Art Museum, or Cleveland Orchestra if they're playing.
HowieDawg Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 hey there Welsh Brown. Now we have England , Scotland and wales represented - pretty much the whole shabang! Welcome to the board - I don't bother with any other browns forums - this place has the best opinion and REAL people on it - you found the right place. Re a trip to Cleveland - nah, I wouldn't bother - it's a dull weekend and you will be ignored by the locals due to your accent and low level football knowledge - i'd save the money. OK then, I lied. It is a blast and worth every penny. keith summed up most key points but I'll chime in too. 1. Hotel & Flights: cheaper the later in the season you leave it, last 5 years hotel and flights cost me and G-Man circa £550 for games in November, this year we are hitting the opener and flight alone is £650. 2. can't fly direct to Cleveland. You would be best off picking gatwick or heathrow and flying to NY and then on to CLE - cheapest route. It's only an hour flight from NY and you will be so excited that it will seem like 5 minutes. me and G-Man sat next to a browns fan on our first flight from NY to CLE and we have been firm friends ever since and met up with him before every game since - that's the quality of OHIO people. 3. Where to stay. I would suggest you pick any downtown hotel. That way you can check out the city: browns stadium & team shop, rock and roll hall of fame, science museum (never been!), bars, bars, bars! There is a new casino in town too if that floats your boat. Hotels are cheap by our standards but may have gone up a bit since the casino opened. expect to pay about $100 per night. We have stayed in 5 different hotels downtown and all were fine. 4. Game tickets are not usually a problem - you can buy them from a variety of sources on the WWW or direct from the browns when single game tickets go on sale - you have plenty of time not to worry about that (although when we win the Superbowl this year it may be more difficult to get seats) As to where to sit in the stadium - it's all good. The stadium is amazing, I still want to cry like a girl with excitement every time I walk towards it on game day. I perefer to see plays from an end zone perspective but any seat is a good seat. AND they let you drink beer during the game AND even bring it to you. 5. if you stay 4 / 5 days and can do december - there is always a chance that you could see a Sunday game and then a Thursday game - quite often the schedule works out like that near Christmas - again you have plenty of time to plan. 6. As keith says - the schedule comes out in april so that's the time next year to do your planning - you never know - we may join you for the same game. 7. if you have 4 / 5 days then a trip South of Cleveland to Canton would be a must - the pro football hall of fame is there, sadly I have not made it there yet because i'm either too hungover to drive or drinking in bars wathcing football sucking on chicken wings. maybe this year I will. 8. You have to make a tailgate - check out the tailgate page on this site. The guys that run and attend the tailgate parties are true legends and the nicest people I know. Go to one and you will come back to CLE every year for the rest of your life. Finally here is a little film I made last year about the highs and lows of going to Cleveland. All of the people we are with in the video are people we met through this board and post regularly - you found an amazing place and let us know if you have any other questions.
kamac19 Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 Sometimes though the entertainment isn't that Entertaining it just adds to the amazing atmosphere created on a trip to Cleveland to hang with the guys from this Board.
kamac19 Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 Or you can join in the traditional sampling of the fine beverages on offer during the Tailgates

Amazing Howie, how much does a trip cost you in total? Cost of flights in total? How many days wpuld you recommend for staying in Cleveland?
HowieDawg Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 Amazing Howie, how much does a trip cost you in total? Cost of flights in total? How many days wpuld you recommend for staying in Cleveland? We always come for a concentrated weekend - my body couldn't take any longer. Fly in Friday - drink and talk football Saturday - drink and talk football - buy more orange and brown gear Sunday - get up really early and go to tailgate - drink talk football, drink, play cornhole, drink chat up the ladies, drink laugh a lot, drink walk to stadium, drink watch the Browns - drink - leave stadium find friends - drink more - eat chicken wings - drink - pass out Monday - get up - nurse hangover - leave cleveland on 3pm flight - back in UK next moening by 7am. It's a tough trip but someone has to do it. Minus the drinking bill (which ran to $250 on just the Friday last year - no shots this year) then i would say you need to budget about £600 for flights and hotel - then the rest is up to you. I'd say a weekend should be your first experience - if you can still talk and see after that, then maybe you can go long the next time!
HowieDawg Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 Or you can join in the traditional sampling of the fine beverages on offer during the Tailgates That's in my top three tailgate memories keith - not the last video - that is not in my memory at all. I hope you can come to the opener this season keith but leave the video recorder at home!

To you have to have connecting flights? Is that in the price? Or do you just pay for a flight to say NY then connect to Cleveland? Is that all in one price? This info is priceless guys
ballpeen Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 Not to sound unfriendly, I am one of the best guys you'll ever know, if you know me, but this stuff isn't all that hard to research. As Howie said, 3-4 days is all you need, but that won't give you enough time to see it all. You'll have to come back, Cleveland has a world renowned Orchestra. Playhouse Square is second only to Broadway is this country. RR was named here, so it is a Rock hub. The Art Museum is world class, one of the best anywhere....really, no joke. No doubt it isn't NYC or Chicago in total, but the things I mentioned are, not to mention it is a diverse city. You can find many communities of one ethnic heritage or another.....all with the wonderful flavors of their food. The West Side Market should be one of the modern 7 wonders of the world....it's great!
Sosban Posted May 29, 2012 Author Report Posted May 29, 2012 Its ok, just easier to talk to people who have actually done it. appreciate it all guys
