Ward is overrated by fans.

He's a solid starter, not a great tackler not a ball hawk, below average in coverage.

He's a hitter and hitters at safety are not near as valuable as they were 20 years ago.

He's not a cornerstone player he's a roleplayer so lower your expectations and hope he doesn't get injured...again.

I'm looking forward to seeing this guy healthy for a full season - especially in our "newish" defensive team. I think Ward is loved beyond his contribution because of his physical style of play - who doesn't like to see a safety put the hit on someone? I know I love it. However I'm not sure he is a very fluid athlete because of his size (bit short) and compensatory bulk. I believe he was tried out at Corner in college but his vert was nowehere near good enough and he had pretty bad hands - so I think he will always be a physical style safety and solid in man to man but maybe plays a little deep to compensate for lack of athleticism. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing him back on the field this year.

I'm not sure I have expressed myself very well here but my humble summary is he's a banger not a hawk. :)

Ward is a good tackler and is good in run support. He isn't great in coverage, but that isn't overly expected when you draft a hard hitting safety..
