The Gipper
For regulars you may know that I have maintained a "Team of the Decade" thread for Pro Football for a few years now. That is based on a scoring system I devised whereby I gave a team 10 points for winning a championship, 6 points for losing a championship game, 3 points for losing a conference title game, and 1 point for making the playoffs in any given year. I am going to apply the same system here. Bear with me as the changes in the playoff system that MLB has used over the years requires some adjustment in terms of applying my formula. From 1903, the year of the first World Series, to 1968 there were ONLY 2 team competing in post season play, an AL champ an an NL champ. To be consistent, I gave the winner of the WS 10 points and the loser 6 points. Its just that no teams were awarded 3 or 1 points for that period. After 1969 there were 4 teams in the playoffs, so 4 teams get points 10/6/3. After the playoffs expanded again in 1995 I then applied the 10/6/3/1 formula. So here are the points.....and the awarding of the mantle of "Team of the Decade" for MLB for every decade from the 1900s to now: 1900s: Cubs 6, 10, 10 ........ 26 points. The Cubs are the Team of the Decade for the 1900-1909 Decade Tigers 6,6,6 .............. 18 pts Pirates 6,10..............16 pts White Sox 10.........10 pts Giants 10.............10 pts Red Sox 10.........10 pts Athletics 6......6 pts 1910s: Red Sox 10,10,10, 10......40 points. The Gipper
1970s Reds 6,6,3,10,10,3.............38 points. The 1970s is the closest Team of the Decade Race in history, with only 2 points separating the first and second place team. (Oddly, the same is true in football, the 70s was the closest race...Steelers/Cowboys only 2 pts apart)
The Gipper
1980s Dodgers 10, 3, 3, 10 ............26 points. The Dodgers are the Team of the Decade from 1980 to 1989 Cardinals 10, 6, 6 ................22 pts. Royals 6, 1, 3, 6..................20 pts A's 3, 6, 10 ........................19 pts Phillies 10, 1, 6..................17 pts Tigers 10, 3 ......................13 pts Mets 10, 3........................13 pts Orioles 10........................10 pts Twins 10..........................10 pts Yankees 3, 6...................9 pts Red Sox 6, 3...................9 pts Giants 3, 6......................9 pts. After that they went back to just division winners playing. Not until 1995 did wildcards come back into play. That is why you see a few teams with 1 pt. The Gipper
Just a note: this was the 4th meeting in the World Series between the Red Sox and Cardinals.
