Flags, flags, flags and more fucking flags. Not just on us, on every team, and it's making the game so fractured and horrible to watch. This is going to turn a lot of prospective new fans off, and might be the final straw for some of the older fans who have seen the game change an awful lot from what it was 30 years ago.

I seriously hope that we don't see it continue in to the regular season, and that this is just to try to drive the point home.

I really hate to point this out but it was mostly on us and we DO have a long standing problem with the yellow fabric...just sayin...

We had 10 penalties for 54 yards, WSH were 11-100. So no, not mostly on us.

hopefully regular season it all will be ironed out. It messed with the pace of the game big time.

just ridiculous. It makes the games so much less fun to watch.

I mean, sure, it's always fun to get that first down because the other team grabs a face mask or holds but it doesn't make you feel like youve accomplished as much.

Not according to the NFL officials.

It also meant that Manziel got a 60 yard drive, with very little in the way of completed passes.

The infographic towards the end of the game should be the telling point here. These numbers are a little off (I can't recall exact percentages) but from 2009-2013 it was pretty consistent in preseason that there were 12-13 flags thrown per game. This preseason it has been just under 19 per game. Honestly, just think about that for a second and realize how different games are going to be if that holds.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The rules are made to manipulate the outcome of the games period.

I don't believe they are made to manipulate the outcome of games.....but they are there to manipulate the style of games. As has been said for decades ever since the late 70s when rules were put into place to originally to disallow contact 5 yards downfield, they want NFL football to be a game of pinball. Bing bing bing, bling bling bling.

And the problem is further exacerbated when, like last night, one team like the Browns gets like 5 of those tick tacky calls in one series, then they have to yell at the referree to give them the same treatment.

Did you notice that after the Browns had like 6 defensive holding or illegal contact calls on them, that the first time the Redskins got one called on them they went ballistic and got an unsportsmanlike penalty called on them.....probably because they accused the ref of making a makeup call since the Browns had gotten so many.

Regardless of whether you love the Browns or the Steelers, or any other NFL team, Roger Goodell is destroying this game!

1. Constant rule changes to make the game generate more money for the owners!

2. He alone makes decisions on conduct penalties (Ray Rice)

As far as the onslaught of penalties for defensive PI and holding, there are two points which are divided by a fine line and require precision to separate. For many years we have all hated how defensive backs can maul a receiver, that has to stop. But King Roger's rule changes aren't designed to fix that touchy problem, they are designed to put money in the owners pockets by making the game an offensive showdown. Those of us who have grown up watching "defense win championships" are sick to death of new rules every year to make games more offensive and more like the NBA with individual highlight reel material!

Think about this......the NFL pretends to care about head injuries and QB injuries, yet they keep changing rules that defy football logic and keep making the game more of a passing game......what plays tend to create head injuries and QB injuries? It's passing plays! QB's seldom get injured on running plays and head to head contact injuries tend to happen between wide receivers and defensive backs. Running backs lowering their head and enduring or delivering a punishing hit is football!

Last but not least by any means is the blind eye the NFL turns on PED's and HGH use which is creating abnormal strength, speed, and agility......it's only natural that injuries will become more severe when a 240 pound linebacker can move with the agility a 180 pound wide receiver and carry power like a 300 pound lineman! I forget who said that the NFL was treating the players like slave gladiators, be he wasn't far off!

Fans should start a grass roots campaign to oust King Roger!

I think there is some validity to this. Yes, they want the game to be more open, more amenable to passing styles.....which they perceive as being more exciting ...and which they perceive will bring more viewers to the game....thus earning more money.

The only thing is I am not sure at all that just because you open the passing game up like they want that that will earn more viewership...thus more cash.m I don't think the league is hurting at all in terms of viewership such that they need to gimmick the game up like they seem to want to do.

Also, if it is their intent to clean up injuries, then these refs failed miserably last night where there was a play where one of the Browns WRs went out on a pattern and a Washington DC N. A. player (can't use the R word) hit him foresquare with a forearm to the neck. It did not draw a flag (but may get him in deep shit with the league office).

So, they called all the ticky tacky calls, but the one I saw where a defenseless receiver was jacked on the head/neck area ws not called.

Maybe the refs should get fined or suspended for missing those events.

They are going to soften and officiate the game to the point of a competitor to the NFL being viable. Many will say it's impossible but many now defunct businesses thought the same thing.

King Roger has done everything possible to ruin the credibility (what little if any left) of the NFL.... He's bastardized the rules and the way it's played all simply for the sake of greed. In 10 yrs.. The NFL will probably be dead...

Rest assured, King Roger reports to the owners and the owners only!....and the owners are about money, period. There are a lot more facets to the money than viewership, there are tickets sales, jersey sales, memorabilia of all types, expanding to other countries, etc. .....not to mention advertising which is the biggest revenue producer when it comes to "more money".

As far as the shot to a WR, if you watch any game with an open mind, you will see that in every game, by and against every team, not just yours. It's part of the thug element that is the NFL, and the refs are too busy watching for the new rules King Roger installs every year to see everything.

It would not surprise me to see that player get a hefty fine. Our players have had that happen to them as well.

A DB that hits a WR in the neck when that WR is looking back the other way usually gets a fine. Now, maybe they will look at it more closely than I could see it (because they never showed the replay) and perhaps they will say that he was hit on the collarbone or shoulder. But both Gruden and Tirico mentioned that the guy could be getting a call from the league office for that.

(though.....if the refs are trying to enforce these new/old rules.....illegal contact etc. wouldn't they be looking at a forearm to the neck? Wouldn't that be considered illegal contact?

Or, maybe what you are saying is that for a certain few minutes of the game, they institute the "Purge" rule. No violation, no rule that is broken, even murder, will be called during these specific minutes of a game.

Wouldn't that be fresh.

They are making it more pussified every year. Getting more boring all the time for me.

What I meant was that the refs are busy with their own agenda which is calling "certain" penalties for King Roger. Have you ever looked for something and ended up finding in a place you looked at five times but you had a different image in mind so you looked right through it without seeing it?

No, I have never done that. Like I said to you before, you should look into assuring that you do not have early onset of Alzheimers. You didn't even remember a 4-5 day discussion thread that we had a couple of weeks ago that you wanted to reiterate again.
