THE BROWNS BOARD

Armonty Bryant is right now our best defensive player and maybe the best player on the team excluding Gordon..

I called Bryant out last week...he's picking up right where he left off last year He's hands down our best pass rusher. He would be in qb's lap every down if we didn't have him lined up as a 3-4 DE where he's got to deal with guard and tackle. When he's one on one he gets in almost every time. Like I said in last weeks thread, to utilize him every down we'd have to use him as a 4-3 DE. So far Sheard and Kruger are picking up exactly where they left off last season which is giving the qb 10 seconds to throw while they dance infront of their OL looking to bat a ball down. Armonty gets in consistently. He's even a good run stopper. He stuck himself inside Jake Longs right shoulder and walked him down the line to make a run stop. Jake Long is one of the best in the league. We have to figure something out with Bryant, we can't put him out there as a 3-4 DL all season long..he's not built to take on double teams all season long.

That is one long ass title

You must be watching a different Kruger than I have because Kruger has looked much better this preseason. He's been in on several plays in the backfield with Bryant and has as many sacks as Bryant does this preseason.

I do agree that I"m not a fan of him lining heads up over a guard. He's best suiting as a gap shooting pass rusher. He gives fits to guards lining up on the inside or outside shoulder because of his speed.

ACL tears typically happen when the foot is planted, and there is an impact to the lateral side of the knee. Didn't see much of an impact, but I think the force applied to Bradford's shoulder was what did it.

I am not really ready to make many comments about the D until the regular season and they start actually playing not the vanilla zone D they have been playing all pre-season. I am encouraged though that we have some athletes... looking forward to see it all come together in the regular season - it is going to be fun!

how has he looked "better"? He looks exactly the same to me. He looks on track to have another season between 4 and 7 sacks. I give the upside as 7 cause last year he was a cunt hair away from a 2 or 3 more sacks over his posted 4.5. That sack he had against Washington RG was flushed right into him by the inside pressure. Props for grabbing RG with one hand and all that...but he didn't do the work in beating an OL. I still see the same upright edge rush too which means this isn't gonna go anywhere. We've seen his upside. He's a serviceable OLB/DE. He's not a starter. Armonty has shown he's a "starter" in the national football league. He showed it when he came in last year during the season. It's amazing how much more difficult the game looks when you watch our current OLB'ers than #95 comes in and makes beating the exact same OL look easy. Even when he doesn't get near the qb cause either the qb threw it away quick or spilled out to the other side...if you rewind the play you are more than likely to see that Armonty still beat his man if he wasn't double teamed. I can't explain why he looks so different. He doesn't look really any bigger or stronger than kruger/sheard so it has to be skill.

he can't be only 265 can he? that's what he's listed at, probably what he came out of college at. But he's playing on a 3-4 line dealing with double teams...hell Kruger is in the 270's and we stand him up. Well fuck, maybe we can just make Armonty an OLB.

Armonty Bryant is a beast, and will lead the team in sacks this year. I'm not disputing that. But Kruger will be better than he was last year. He lost weight and got faster, which means he will get to the QB more. He still led the team in QB pressures last year, too. Being faster, more of those pressures will become sacks. He is in a defense that knows how to get to the passer better than Horton's defense. The fact that Sheard was supposed to be the man and has lost out to both Mingo and Kruger ought to concern you more.

when you start naming DEs LBs that's the problem given these players play most of their pre-nfl careers just coming off the edge and not worrying about the pass.

to call mingo, sheard or even kruger a LB is ridiculous. i know it's basically just vernacular but that's why the 3-4 sucks ass. trying to turn a player into something they're not is ridiculous.

sheard will be fine.

bet he gets more sacks than kruger.

Ab really does look great so far! ......and I think they really botched it with Sheard by moving him to LB....seems too big and too slow....Woulda been a great DE if they had just stayed with the 4-3 and left him there....

1) Kruger lost weight? why does he look bigger to me then? Seriously I thought he put on a couple pounds...figured they told him you're not gonna go out and cover anybody so might as well concentrate on rushing and edge protection.

2) I think Sheards issue is more that Mingo is a pure edge rusher...so it's nice to have that on the weak side. Kruger and Sheard aren't really competing with Mingo's spot. Having Sheard and Kruger in at the same time is basically the exact same player on either side whereas having Mingo blaze around the edge gives the qb something different to think about.

You guys do realize that they have not been using Sheard as they will be in the regular season right? This defense is going to look totally different week 1 - God the regular season cannot get here soon enough

Posted

I'm not sure about totally different. But With the way Kruger is playing (especially against the run) it wouldn't surprise me to see him line up at the 3,4 or 5 tech along with Armonty. Sheard might just stay about the same.

i hate the 3-4.

Especially when you have a 4-3 roster...

Actually think I kinda "got" Pettine's D this past week... The giveaway was listing/ playing Big Phil at "DE". The player to his outside may not have his hand on the ground, but that player acts as if he were a 4-3 DE a high percentage of the time...

The weakside end is the Leo spot. Stand up linebacker that can have his hand in the ground. Aside from that double eagle look we give frequently, you'll find some similarities in this system when looking at Seattle's roster.
