THE BROWNS BOARD

First Rounders vs Rest of the World

We've all talked a lot recently about the need to take certain positions in the first round, or to *not* take some in the first round. So I thought it'd be fun to make a couple 'all-star' teams made up of first round picks and 'others'. I doubt everyone will agree with all of the selections, but it's just to give an idea of the caliber of player availble.

So here's what I have - and it's not two 11s, or a 53 man roster, just a few players from each positions.

First Rounders Rest of the World
QB: P Manning, A Luck …… …… …… …… …… …… T Brady, R Wilson
RB: A Peterson M Lynch …… …… …… …… …… L McCoy, J Charles
WR: C Johnson J Jones AJ Green …… …… … ...… J Gordon, A Brown, D Jackson
TE: V Davis G Olsen …… …… …… …… …… …..… A Gates, J Graham
OL: J Thomas Z Martin A Mack K Long T Williams ...… J Peters, J Bitonio, J Kelce, M Yanda, C Glenn
DE: JJ Watt, R Quinn, G McCoy, N Suh …… ……C Wake, G Hardy, G Atkins , K Williams
LB: C Matthews, T Hali, L Kuechly, P Willis .… ... ...L David, J Houston, K Alonso, N Bowman
DB: P Peterson, D Revis, J Haden, E Thomas, E Berry …....R Sherman, B Grimes, B Flowers, E Weddle, K Chanellor

One thing I noticed - running backs & tight ends were easier to find outside the first round. QBs were basically a wash - with Brady and Wilson a the top, along with Brees, Romo, Kaepernick, Dalton among others showing you don't need to be a first round pick to be successful.
Another big thing - I struggled to find elite O-linemen outside the first round.
Any suggestions for players I missed?

Yeah, but the formatting is terrible. If we could put table in I would.

There is a way to do it. I will start it off for you:

First Rounders.............................................Rest of the World

QB Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck..............Tom Brady, Russell Wilson

RB A Peterson, M. Lynch...........................McCoy, J. Charles

etc. etc. and on from there.

Ugh, those are terrible to read and a pain to format. But better to have them side by side still, I guess.

We need to get table functionality on here, BB Codes exist already - who's the webmonkey?

Morton was a first rounder, Dawson was too, by Steelers, then he was traded to the Browns, then released, then picked up by AFL KC.

Nice list. Enjoyed it. Some truly monster players there.

And, as we also know, a lot of high picks wouldn't make that list. Haha. Putting it lightly.

So Ill add my list of players, but all were top 2 picks. And not top 2 rounds. These are top 2 overall. So, every player on my list MUST have been a "sure shot" "slam dunk" "cant miss" kind of player. I remember many of these guys being touted as the best everrrrrrrr to come out. Hahahaha

There were a few positions(TE, CB & S) that have never been selected #1 or #2. So, I picked the highest I could find. Here we gooooo:

Name - overall pick # - # of pro bowls:

QB:

Jamarcus Russell - #1 - 0

Ryan Leaf - #2 - 0

RB:

KiJana Carter - #1 - 0

Blair Thomas - #2 - 0

WR:

Charles Rogers - #2 - 0

Johnny Jones - #2 - 0

Larry Elkins - #1 - 0

TE:

Eric Ebron - #9

OT:

Tony Mandarich - #2 - 0

Robert Gallery - #2 - 0

OG:

D. Steinkuhler - #2 - 0

Leonard Davis - #2 - 0

C:

Bob Johnson - #2 - 0

DE:

Courtney Brown - #1 - 0

Chris Long - #2 - 0

DT:

Dan Wilkinson - #1 - 0

Steve Emtman - #1 - 0

MLB:

Tom Cousineau - #1 - 0

Johnny Cooks - #2 - 0

OLB:

Aundrey Bruce - #1 - 0

Quentin Coryat - #2 - 0

SS/FS:

Michael Huff - #7 - 0

Stanley Richard - #9 - 0

CB:

Morris Claiborne - #6 - 0

Pacman Jones - #6 - 0

Extra fun trivia////At least 3 of these players were picked or traded for by the Browns. One of them(who?) we acquired with a draft pick that was later used to select what HOF quarterback?

Craig Morton

Drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1st round (5th overall) of the 1965 NFL Draft.

Drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the 10th round (75th overall) of the 1965 AFL Draft.

I imagine this happened often...

also interesting...

The Falcons drafted Favre 33rd overall (2nd round) but then Green Bay traded a first-round pick for Favre after the 1991 season.

so a first round pick was investing in Favre. you could lawyer that one.

First thing that jumped out at me... not that the lower round guys are slouches, but...

Also to some extent ditto for the D-line...

My general football knowledge isn't good enough to know all the top class linemen and where they were drafted so I had to lean on things like pre-season top 10 lists, and the mid-season all-pros.

Jim Kelly with the pick traded for Cousineau)

All the players are currently active (I believe). I'm sure you can make an all-time non-first round team, but the point was to compare the depth of talent available in any given draft, so it's time dependent. All-time, you can probably come up with two teams that are inseparable.

One of them(who?) we acquired with a draft pick that was later used to select what HOF quarterback?

Jim Kelly with the pick traded for Cousineau) Correct.
