Tampering allegations against the Mangini and the Browns?

Strange that this escaped attention around here, but I thought you guys would all want to know.

I'll be the first to admit that tampering is a stupid rule - mainly because its unenforceable unless a coach or GM are total idiots and publicly admit it and get caught.

Unfortunately for the Browns that may be what has happened here, and Roger Goodell seems fond of taking away draft picks even for violations of unenforceable rules, as he's done so in cases of tampering before.

I think the fact that the Giants aren't going to file a complaint may save the day, but you never know if Goodell will take action on his own. In any event, it's never a good sign when a head coach makes a mistake that can cause a team to lose draft picks.

You must have not read the entire blog post. The only way to trigger any league punishment is for the Giants to complain, and Jerry Reese has already said that they won't. There's a formal process that Goodell can't arbitrarily depart from.

It wasn't a smart thing for Mangini to say, but it's not in any way a big deal.

I think someone quoted the Grossi Article in the comments:

"Mangini though, after responding to a question by Grossi, said, “He’s a guy we’d look at,” with the deflective, “I can tell you there’s a lot of free agents we’re looking at.”"

Sounds to me like A: Grossi blew it out of proportion, and used poor words like "Indicated Strong Interest." AND B: The guy writing that article blew it even farther out of proportion, even when Reese said he saw no issue with it.

Everyone is trying to make a story out of nothing. And they're not doing a good job. Grossi is reaching for stories, which is going to be tough now, since this coaching / Front Office will keep information a little more tight than the last one did.

Sounds just like Browns fans convinced every 70's Steeler was on roids and that not a single player from another team was on roids. They also forget it didn't break any rules and the dangers of it were largly unkown but still try give as an * anyways.

Not sure, but weren't steroids a controlled substance, even then? I kind of doubt that any doctor would LEGALLY prescrive the dosages and frequency (as well as length) needed to actually aid performance.

One must assume then, that even their medical staff is crooked.

Steroids weren't verboten in Baseball explicitly, either. Seems MLB went to great lengths to hide what was actually going on, though.

You are correct in that they were a controlled substance and I agree with your second sentence. But the problem with that is that nothing can be done without more specific information that could serve as proof. Its unclear which 70's players from any team took roids (for the most part) and unclear where players got the roids.

Well, if they'll burn the tapes against your Patriots - maybe we'll get the same cooperation from above. You gotta be consistent. Nobody has been burned worse than the Cleveland Browns since the mid 90s.

WHY was it when the Browns became an expansion team the art of 2 first round picks and 2 second round picks was sliced in half for expansion teams? Meanwhile they assign Rooney's nephews to officiate the Bettis retirement party in Detroitt: Dewey and Howie Cheatem.

After what the league did to us in the 90s - we should have had 3 first round picks and 3 second round picks in 1999. Instead we got our asses paddled like we were pledging a fraternity.
