Guest Aloysius
You mean Johnny Knox isn't the next Jerry Rice? I'm shocked. In all seriousness, Knox does look good in this clip: In New York, Mangini tended to bring in speedy receivers in the later rounds (Chansi Stuckey) and as waiver wire pickups (David Clowney). Knox, with his 4.34 40 and 4.15 shuttle times, would certainly fit the mold
Pumpkin Eater
I'm pretty sure Jerry Rice didn't have good "measurables" but SF looked past it and got one of the best recievers ever.
heckofajobbrownie
Those Draft Guys sure can interview, huh? I think Knox is interesting. You take a guy like Donnie Avery, who everyone thought was overdrafted because he could run but not run routes, actually had a decent rookie year. Knox looks to have great hands, and there's a real place for these smallish receivers. Short area quickness is what the slot is all about, and he looks to have it. Stuckey is an interesting comparison. He ran a 4.65 in Indy coming off that injury, but anyone who had ever watched him play at Clemson knew he was faster than that. And more than just faster, he's a waterbug. That's what makes the difference in the slot more than straight line speed. I think you're right. I'm sure Mangini has his eyes out for a slot guy like Knox.
DTBH
Some players don't measure well at the combine and perform well in the NFL. Some blow up the combine but don't pan out in the NFL. Some do both, some do neither. That's why I think it's always best to find players with the right mind. You get a guy with the drive and desire to succeed, the mental toughness to persevere, coupled with the intelligence to understand how to make it happen, an inch of height here or 3 lbs there or 1/10th of a second of a 40 there or a bit of hip flexion or extra knee bend there doesn't mean shit.
