CROWDER RE-SIGNS WITH DOLPHINS

Posted by Aaron Wilson on February 25, 2009, 6:57 p.m. EST

The Miami Dolphins have re-signed starting linebacker Channing Crowder to a multi-year contract, according to a league source.

It’s a somewhat surprising development considering Crowder, by most accounts, wasn’t expected to return.

However, the Dolphins hammered out a deal with Crowder’s agent two days before the free agent signing period in order to retain him.

According to NFL.com, Crowder registered 113 tackles last season in 13 starts. Listed at 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, the former University of Florida standout is only 25 years old.

UPDATE: “In talking to Channing, he made it very clear he was not interested in leaving the Dolphins,” agent Joel Segal told Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. ”So now he is going to get his wish and stay with the team he wanted to be with.”

Not a huge surprise, as we probably didn't have enough cap room anyway....but one less option.

Very good player with very serious character and durability issues. Probably wouldn't have been a good fit for us, but he's a really fun guy to watch.

And it probably takes ILB off of Miami's list of draft needs. Though they probably could use an upgrade over Akin Ayodele, they'll more likely target an OLB or DB in Round 1. Look for it to be a DB if Yeremiah Bell signs elsewhere.

This probably extends downward that 8-25 range for Maualuga that Heck & I agreed on a few weeks ago. Or, alternatively, Miami could emerge as a trading partner for any team wanting to move up for Maualuga.
