Connor Shaw is too good to keep off the active roster.

I agree.....

Presumably he doesnt have the tools, but he just keeps playing well.....soooo.....in the words of some long lost coach.....

"I can only go by what I see..."

Love what I'm hearing about Pryor. His growth and personal time spent with Moss, Brown and coaches will pay dividends.

edit: I don't suppose anyone has tickets to a weekend training camp? I looked a little late and they're all gone. If anyone has an extra or two, I'd gladly shell you a few

duckets for them.

alrighty then.....Day #1 of camp is officially in the books.....

todays training camp/Browns Daily notes....highlights....lowlights....

Haden and Tramon Williams were very sharp and made the O's day very difficult....

Pryor looked good and caught the ball well....

Benji also had a very solid day and looks to be giving a lil extra effort....

More raves for Gabriel too.....

Mayle struggled with some drops, but still has some lingering discomfort with the thumb...

Cam Erving working exclusively with 2nd team...Pettine says first team is solid, so he's gotta earn those reps...

Johnny had a rough 1st day and did not throw the ball well...

Shaw and McCown looked pretty good....tho McCown and Crow missed on a handoff.....(Crow had a few of these last year too)

AB spend the whole day on the D line...no LB reps....

Taylor sat out and did not participate in the conditioning test......hmmmm....

Mack is taking full reps and looking fine...... :)

And....so went day #1..... :)

Same as it ever was...

and he finished strong too....actually ended up going 14 outta 15....had a stellar day!

Obviously a stand-in. LOL! :P

Is Pryor a faster version of Mike Evans for JF? How many of those were completed to him? Or was he spreading it around today?

Dwayne Bowe made some bold statements today.....

On Josh McCown......

"He's showing all the potential of being a top-five quarterback in the NFL," Bowe said of McCown. "I see him as one of the best I have [played with]. He's making great throws, smart throws and he's mobile in the pocket, more than people think. I think he's going to surprise a lot of people."

"Oh, my God. We're going to be the sleepers," Bowe said. "Look at my numbers last year and then look at my years four years prior to that. I led the league. It's not about what you did last year. It's about what you're doing now. The way he's performing out here, it's unbelievable, making tight throws, trusting his receivers."

And on Terrell Pryor.....

"I have never seen a quarterback transition from quarterback to receiver in two practices and do as good as he did -- ever," Bowe said. "But he's making it look so easy that he's starting to scare me. He's going to be really, really good. People think he's just going to come in and be a body. But he's actually going to play here and make plays for this team."

....I knew this would put a smile on your face.....

Hoping to see more of the same going forward........build back a little confidence and things could get interesting...:)

Let's get some pads on and play something close to live action football, than things could get interesting in some camp battles. Players talking up other teammates talent, is a good thing. But even better is a positive team media and national media reporting good things also. It sounds like a good start.

It seems like he can do at least one of those things. The good news is the other one can be taught if he can't.

Here are Terry Plutos notes.....always a good assessment.....

BEREA, Ohio -- Scribbles in my Cleveland Browns notebook as training camp opens:

1. The Browns have two very, very big receivers. The first is Terrelle Pryor, the former Ohio State and Oakland Raiders quarterback being converted to receiver. He's listed at 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds and looks bigger. He made a couple of nice catches. There will be plenty of reports about Pryor all during camp. But it was a very good first day for him.

2. The other big receiver is . The other, Dwayne Bowe, is listed at 6-foot-2 and 222 pounds. Like Pryor, he is a very large target. He also has caught 532 NFL passes. I asked Mike Pettine about Bowe, who said: "You look at having some of the other smaller, explosive guys – Hawk (WR Andrew Hawkins) and Gabe (WR Taylor Gabriel) ... (WR Travis) Benjamin is a little bit bigger but not much. You need that big receiver (who) can make a contested catch. Bowe does an excellent job on the back-shoulder throws. He made one today. He does a real nice job getting his feet down. Obviously, he's shown why we brought him here."

3. Benjamin had a very good day catching passes mostly from Josh McCown. The Browns will not be in full pads until Saturday. So this was more like an extension of spring time OTAs. But having Bowe will make a difference because of his size and strength. Their biggest receiver of consequence last season was Miles Austin, listed at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds. Bowe looks much larger.

4. When he comes on the field with the second team defense, it's Justin Gilbert who attracts a lot of attention. Can the first-rounder from 2014 leave his disastrous rookie season behind? But the young defensive back who impressed me in the OTAs and again Thursday was Pierre Desir, the fourth-rounder from 2014. At 6-2 and 206 pounds, he has the size to cover taller receivers. Veteran Tramon Williams (signed from Green Bay) is starting at cornerback along with Joe Haden. Gilbert and Desir are batting for backup spots.

You need that big receiver that can make a contested catch.

5. The Johnny Manziel report: It was the first day of camp and Manziel had at least two passes batted down. He was "sacked" a few times. He missed a few throws to open receivers. His best delivery was a 30-yarder to rookie Vince Mayle, who dropped it. He made good throw to Kevin Cone, who caught it for about 25 yards. Cone has been with Atlanta and is a longshot to make the team. Overall, it was a rough day for Manziel -- and it also was the first of camp.

6. Pettine praised Manziel for knowing the offense, getting the guys lined up right -- things before the ball is snapped. He didn't want to dissect much about how Manziel actually played. But that makes sense. McCown is the starter. Manziel is the backup. And it's refreshing compared to a year ago where everything about Manziel was so over-exposed and over-analyzed.

7. McCown was poised in the pocket and in control of the offense. He threw a nice sideline pass to Bowe -- the play that was later praised by Pettine. McCown looked like a guy who is in his 13th NFL season. At 6-4 and 218 pounds, he also has the size of the typical AFC North quarterback. I wrote about the Browns in the AFC North in an earlier story.

8. Tight end Rob Housler is 6-5, 220 pounds. He had some good catches. Housler had 45 receptions for Arizona in 2012, then 39 in 2013. But he caught only nine last year. The Browns wanted a tight end who can be a viable receiver. Housler has the size and speed to at least look the part. Now we'll see if the 27-year-old can deliver.

9. Rookie Duke Johnson lined up all over the field. The running back not only was in the backfield, but in the slot and even as an extra wide receiver. The ability to catch passes and do it from different formations is something that separates Johnson from backfield mates Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West. I'm excited to see what Johnson can do in this offense.

10. Rookies Danny Shelton and Cameron Erving both started with the second string. Shelton was in the middle of the defensive line. Erving played mostly right guard. The coaches don't want to hand any rookie a starting spot so early in camp.

Thanks for the updates Mud!

Doogie Housler only weighs 220 pounds? That's about what Greg Little weighed as a WR when he gave us - built like Tarzan plays like Danny Ferry in traffic. I learned to understand the lyrics of "Don't Pay the Ferryman!"

TimCouchPullsOut had some good posts about the expects/projects from Doogie Housler. This might kick Housler into competing with Malcolm Johnson for the FB/HB reps - but that's only me speculating/stereotyping him from the body weight thang.

Young linemen usually start off training camp on the 2nd or 3rd string units here. I wouldn't be surprised if either guy isn't starting week 1. Shelton will play as much in the rotation or more than the guy ahead of him so that means even less on the defensive line than it does on the o-line. I've already posted that if Erving doesn't start immediately or they redshirt him to 2nd string all of the rookie year doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing at all. If he's moving to OG where leverage is of the utmost importance - he's going to be facing a lot of stout guys that weigh about 340 pounds. I don't think he'll take as long as Greco took to get where we want him; but in the same token - we liked knowing where Greco currently ranks in the league at RG to the extent there's no hurry. They can pack a lot of power, size and explosion into Erving his first season of NFL strength and conditioning.

Last but not least, you now have the best avatar on the board!

Sounds like the injuries are coming in early.

DL Winn with a knee, RB Duke Johnson a Hamstring, RB West had a Calf issue.

This is and has always been my concern :

Dan Labbe @dan_labbe 2h2 hours ago McCown having a tough day. Not dealing with pressure well. #Browns

On a positive note, it sounds like Manziel is doing better this year, but of course he is playing with the twos.

Haslam spoke today, had some positives :

Channel 3 Sports @WKYCSports 2h2 hours ago Haslam: over the next two years, we've got to see if Johnny Manziel is a good quarterback #3Browns #browns @wkyc

And this is encouraging :

Billy Wynn was just carted off the practice field with a leg injury.

Fingers crossed for my Billy...

Here's the surprise bit from the reporting article:

"Winn, listed at 300 pounds, said he shed 25 pounds in the offseason to regain his "explosiveness" and try to prevent injuries."

Never realized he had gotten all the way up to 325...
