Thanks to the discovery of a magical genie that one campaign promise will be up to you. You could: (for example) End all abortions at any point you wish 1st 2nd 3rd trimester or never at all. Destroy the nuclear reactors in Iran, North Korea or anywhere whenever you see fit. Extend amnesty to any all aliens or find and deport any or all of them. Secure or open the border. Lower or raise personal or corporate taxes as you see fit. Increase the minimum wage to any number you want or eliminate the minimum wage altogether or anything in between. The power to override the ACLU over any lawsuit they bring. Overturn any decision of the Supreme Court and/or rewrite add or eliminate any of the constitutional amendments. Open up free trade agreements or slap severe tariffs on foreign goods. End or increase support Financial military or humanitarian aid any foreign countries. Legalize or eliminate any drug you choose. End or expedite the death penalty. Install a strict and comprehensive system of cap and trade or carbon or energy tax or is the already in place regulations. Let's say the genie offered you a first second and third choice. Feel free to think of your own issue or issues and insert your own conditions or restrictions. Just curious. Deport those where it's not a genuine case of asylum - they can go through the green card process like me (eventually) and everybody. Lower or raise personal or corporate taxes as you see fit. Not sure what they are now, but incentives for companies to produce things in the US would be a good start as mentioned previously. Increase the minimum wage to any number you want or eliminate the minimum wage altogether or anything in between. Ensure minimum wage is in line with, and slightly above, the tax free allowance (or whatever it's called there) for someone working 35 hours a week. So someone working 35 hours a week gets maybe $2k over the tax free allowance (so they're actually paying tax). That's about $10k + $2k = $12k p/a. 35 hours per week, 47 weeks per year (5 weeks holiday is fairly standard here not sure about there), gives you a minimum wage of about $7.30. The power to override the ACLU over any lawsuit they bring. That seems arbitrarily heavy handed and pointless. Overturn any decision of the Supreme Court and/or rewrite add or eliminate any of the constitutional amendments. I'd probably remove the 2nd, but that won't fly here. don't know enough to talk about them, but there are plenty I know and like. Humanitarian aid is bulletproof imo. Financial aid in foreign countries is often cheaper than not giving any in the long run, in terms of having to clean up the mess with military aid. Legalize or eliminate any drug you choose. Decriminalize lower class drugs and stop putting people in prison for trivial offences. End or expedite the death penalty. End it. Install a strict and comprehensive system of cap and trade or carbon or energy tax or is the already in place regulations. Not the right way to go about it. My concern is the democrats are close to getting their dream of one party control. When all the illegal immigrants become voters they will vote heavily democratic and we will have only democrat presidents no matter how lousy of a candidate the democrats run or how good the republican candidate is. There will no longer be enough independent voters to decide presidential elections. Under Obama entitlements such as foodstamps have gone up dramatically and who will these people vote for? The party that wants to cut entitlement spending? I doubt it. I wouldn't care about the out of control entitlement spending if we were running a surplus but we aren't and everyone knows we cannot afford it and the national debt keeps growing. It gives them the FREEDOM to NOT BE CONTROLLED by a partisan union that can coerce membership in said union, demand union dues from said coerced member, and use union dues any freakin partisan manner the all powerful union sees fit. come on, Bob. You can do better than that. I don't think you will buy what I sell, but I'll try.... Right to Work is a way for the Rs to indirectly block funds the Ds for PACs. The union member has ample opportunity to go to their union hall or union rep, and voice their displeasure with an issue or candidate being funded or endorsed. That's the democratic way, the way it's supposed to go. In a perfect world, these union meetings would have perfect attendance, but of course, they never do. So the Rs want to sell a clever little catch phrase, "right to work," to a contingent of unhappy/disgruntled union members, encouraging them to abandon their union and free load off of the benefits, instead of actually encouraging discussion and participation in their own union meetings. It's "tampering" basically, by an outside party. It's not the way to do business. The weird thing to me is this country was formed on organization in general. Some wish to do away with organization today, it's crazy. And yes, before you chastise, I do understand the radical views by some in unions rub many the wrong way, including me. A bunch of small contributions from union members adds up to quite a lot. The way our political system is set up, unfortunately we have to play the game of PACs to get any voice. It sucks, but I'll be damned if I'm going to sit still and watch the anti-union folks extinguish some PAC contributions via legislation....that's a form of tyranny for goodness sake, and that's why you can see why me, and others like me, are against this RTW. Here's a sample of my union dues, in case you wondered: $56/month....$12 to IAFF, $12 to NOFF, $3 to a coffee kitty, $29 goes into our checking account directly, to pay for condiments, back little league baseball and football teams in town, our FF Scholarship we award every year to a graduating senior, general expenditures such as a Plain Dealer subscription, golf outings, general fund balance. The IAFF and NOFF may spend a portion of those monies on PACs, and yes, we are in communication if we are opposed. FYI, we backed Voinovich for Governor years ago. But sometimes? unions lose their legitimacy, via their own self-perpetuating and greedy maneuvering over the years. And sometimes, they go lefty because the lefties promise them more power in return for their loyal donations and support. Then all the rest of the non-lefties in the union have no way to not support the stupid stuff. Sure, they can communicate that. Talk about looking for trouble with your own union. The older union members see younger kids come in with college degrees, i.e. in education... and they don't have a work ethic worth a damn. The employees who choose to not join the union, have all the freedom in the world to donate as much money to the dems as they want. But the union will have less leverage to force employees to join the union, and be helpless in how the union's flagrant self-interest goes partisan against said coerced employees' will. My Wife is very conservative - joined the union. Just once, a union rep got testy with her, because she wouldn't say she'd vote democratic. And she was about 4 years from retiring. Her co-teachers found out, and clamped down on that fast as hell.... or I would have had serious talks with some people, and they knew that. My Wifie just thought it was amusing, and politely annoyed her to the max. But I would have been really po'd about that garbage. The union rep? Apologized very nicely. All this took place in one day before I could have found out. Now, it's funny to remember that one. And, note, Bob, I think the vast, vast majority of human beings in this country respect firemen. It takes serious dedication, can be very dangerous, requires serious honor and dedication. But how does a firemens' union strike, do a work stoppage, when the fire alarm rings at a families' home? Surely that never happens. But barring the dumb hypothetical above, even firemen, working in a work place environment, need protection from unfair labor practices, etc. But when unions go all in for the dems permanently, those unions have no reason to bitch that they can't get their way with republican legislators all the time.
