POPQUIZ: What two Current NFL team names were abandoned by MLB franchises that still exist?

Throwing out some guesses:

If you are talking about the city name: New York Giants.

I think the LA/ Brooklyn Dodgers may have once been the "Lions".

The Indians used to be known as the Bronchos (one letter off from Denver Broncos)

And, of course there used to be the St. Louis Browns...nka Balt. Orioles.

(on another note: Buccaneers used to be the name of an NFL team in LA).

Try this set on for size over the weekend. All about names/locations of teams in the 4 major sports:

Gooodunov.....here are the answers:

1. One major league once had 3 teams playing in the league that were not based in North America. Try to name the league and the teams/locations that the 3 played in.

The WHL, now merged with the NHL had at some point a Finland team, a Czechoslovakia team...and a team called....The Soviet All Stars.

2. Only 1 team in the history of the 4 major sports was not named for a geographic location...city/state/region. It basically had a "corporate name" e.g. The Goodyear Wingfoots (that is not it though.) Name that team.

The OOrang Indians. NFL. Oorang was the name of the company that sponsored the team.....which company ran Dog Kennels.

3. Where did the Tonawanda Kardex play? (give location of team)

Tonawanda NY...yes, a Buffalo Suburb.

4. What current NHL franchise has played in the most different major markets?

(note....something like moving from NJ to Brooklyn is still within the same market)

I originally had the NJ Devils, who played as the Kansas City Scouts and the Colorado Rockies. Three markets.

But...as noted the Dallas Stars may have been an almagamation of teams that formerly played in Oakland, then Cleveland, then Minnesota and finally Dallas.

But.....Hockeyreference.com has the Oakland Seals/Cleveland Barons as a defunct franchise....not as a continuation to the Stars.

So....not sure about the right answer. I know that the Barons merged in with the Minnesota North Stars.....but the league may not see it as a continuation franchise.

5. What current NFL franchises have played in the most different major markets?

The Cardinals.....Chicago/St. Louis/Phoenix

The Rams....Cleveland/LA/St. Louis

Good old St. Louis, about to lose another franchise.

6. What current MLB franchises have played in the most different major markets?

The As: Philly/KC/Oakland

The Braves: Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta

The Orioles: Milwaukee/St. Louis/Baltimore....the difference here is the team changed its name every time it moved, from Milwaukee Brewers to St. Louis Browns to Balt. Orioles.

7. What current NBA franchises have played in the most different major markets?

The Kings: Rochester/Cincinnati Royals....then Kansas City/Sacramento Kings

The Hawks: Tri-City (Moline/Davenport/Rock Island)/Milwaukee Blackhawks, St. Louis/Atlanta Hawks

8. Name all the team nicknames that are currently used by more than one major league team. (duplicate nicknames)

LA/Sacramento Kings

Texas/NY Rangers

NY/San Fran Giants

St. Louis/Arizona Cardinals

NY/Winnipeg Jets

Carolina/Florida Panthers

(no longer: Edm./Houston Oilers)

9. Name all the names of birds that are currently being used as nicknames by major league teams (NFL/MLB/NHL/NBA)

Cardinals, Falcons, Ravens, Eagles, Seahawks, Orioles, Blue Jays, Hawks, Pelicans, Ducks, Blackhawks, Penguins...plus, I would have accepted Raptors...which, while the team is named for extinct Dinosaurs, any current "Bird of Prey" is also considered a Raptor.

NOT named for birds: Detroit Redwings or Nashville Predators.

10. Of the 32 current NFL teams, there are 3 nicknames that a team used to be known as that are no longer in use by an NFL team. Name these 3 names.

(note: differentiate those in question 11)

Actually....we have identified at least 5 of these: Chicago Staley nka Bears. Spartans nka Lions. Braves nka Redskins. Oilers nka Titans. Pirates nka Steelers. Plus, if we count the "Steagles" that may be another.

11.A. There are two nicknnames now in use by an NFL franchise that used to belong to a different current NFL franchise. Name these.

These of course are the Titans who took a name formerly used by the now Jets, and the Texans, formerly used by the Chiefs.

B. There is one nickname now in use by a current MLB franchise that used to belong to a different current MLB franchise. Name it.

The Brewers. Once upon a time the Baltimore Orioles actually began their existance as the Milwaukee Brewers.

C. There is one nickname now in use by an NBA franchise that used to belong to a different current MLB franchise. Name it. (excluding the Hornets/Bobcats change of name/franchises)

The Rockets.....now used by Houston (who actually started as the San Diego Rockets)..... The now Denver Nuggest started their existance as the Denver Rockets. 1968-1974. The San Diego Rockets were an NBA expansion team in 1968....and the Denver Rockets were an original ABA franchise. They both went by the same name at the same time. The Denver team then changed its name, probably to avoid confusion as those San Diego Rockets moved closer by moving to Houston

12. Identify which of the 4 sports used to have teams play that sport that had the following names:

A. Tip Tops/Solons,/Ruby Legs/ Quickstep/ Pepper These were all baseball teams....before the turn of the 20th Century.

B. Triangles, Crimson Giants, Brickley Giants, Tornadoes, Gunners These were all early NFL team names.

C. Rebels, Stags, Olympians, Condors, Sounds, Muskies These were early NBA or ABA team names.

D. Stingers/Blades/Aeros/Wanderers/Scouts/Toros These were all Hockey team names....most WHA

I am not of the belief that any of these names were used by an existing franchise. These are all defunct.
