Did they really call a personal foul on Ward for hitting Newton while he was still up and running?

I had the sound down so i didn't catch who the foul was on, but they said it was a late hit on Newton. I saw no one hit Newton even remotely late. He lowered his pads and the last guy to hit him was ward...but well before his knee was down. Can someone explain this to me? Cause this sport for me is becoming precariously close to becoming unwatcheable for me. I really don't give a shit about this game but if they start this bullshit i'm turning it off.
