Oldcrow1945
I'm on board with this one too. Sometimes it seems Wedge has a thing for utility guys that will hit their weight. This is a guy that was headed to Columbus if not for JC's injury while Barfield had made the team.
Guest Masters
Let's see, Graffanino is a career .266 hitter who has never had more than 5 errors in a season. Barfield is a career .261 hitter (if you throw out his one year in SD back in 2006, he's a sub .240 hitter), who when has seen full time has committed 10 or more errors as well. That's why he ain't see in big league time. He is another Marte and CLE should not be wasting it's time on him in hopes that he suddenly comes back around. We aren't talking about Brandon Philips here.

We aren't talking about Brandon Philips here. There is actually very little difference between Phillips and Barfield. In either their minor league stats or expectations. One spent six years in the minors with just over 60 HR's. The other spent 7 years in the minors with just over 60 HR's. Their Slugging perecentage and BA are basically identical. Phillips Ability with the glove is even worse than Barfield's. 31 errors already in his time with the Reds. So I'm unsure where you get the "We are not talking Brandon Phillips here" reference. In comparng Barfield to Graff....Barfield gives you much more power and a lot better speed. If you want to play Graffino so you won't have any errors then go for it. But if you want a guy that has more power and can steal bases and a larger upside then Barfield should be playing.
coal11794
the only reason i can think of keeping graffanino is that he is a veteran and knows the game a little better than the younger guys. after that i am at a loss

The comparison is in that CLE gave up on Phillips to fast, and he turned into a good player for CIN over the last few years (roughly .280 hitter, 20HR, 80 RBI, and 25 steals). Barfield is not gonna be that guy. Barfield is another Marte. A promising prospect that just won't develop. On the error note, it's 32 errors over 5 years for CIN, which is less than 10 a year. Barfield gives you power that has not shown on the big league level (one good year in the NL West for SD) and speed that does no good when he can't get on base (sub .300OBP at the big league level, and get's caught stealing 25% of the time). You play Graff because he can actually hit at the big league level and is solid defensively. Potential that isn't harnest or seen on the field during games is useless at the big league level. BrownB499
I wondered if it wasn't more for the clubhouse comradery, kind of a Trot Nixon thing keep, things loose ? We lost two big ones in CC & Casey. Pronk & Victor should be the guys filling that role but maybe they thought Graffanino would help loosen things up.JMO

But I still think it has more to do with who can help the team the most right now.
