The Gipper
Bah Humbug. So the Browns will be starting another QB for the bazillionth time in recent memory. Speaking of Memory, here we go down Memory Lane of recent Quarterbacks past who have started games for the Browns since 1999: Conner Shaw...third string for the Bears, perhaps injured, Mod edit: Broken Leg Thad Lewis....third string for 49ers. Bruce Gradkowski....third string for Steelers Luke McCown....backup for Saints Brian Hoyer...backup for the Bears Brandon Weeden....backup for the Texans Colt McCoy....backup for the Redskins Derek Anderson...backup for the Panthers Some on the Shelf: John P. Manziel...continually reaching for something that sits on a shelf Jason Campbell...not played since 2014 (another thread says he confirms his retirement) Seneca Wallace....has not played in NFL since 2013...presumably retired Brady Quinn....not played since 2013. Doing a pretty good job actually of analysis on TV for Fox. Charlie Frye....has not played since 2009. Coaching high school on Florida Tim Couch....announcing for SEC Network Kelley Holcomb...announcing games for alma mater at Middle Tenn. St. Trent Dilfer...announcing for NFL Countdown on ESPN Jeff Garcia....last year was an asst. coach for the Rams Doug Pederson...new HC of the Philadelphia Eagles Jake Delhomme....works in banking, owns racehorses and makes commercials for Bojangles restaurants Ken Dorsey.....works a QB coach for the Carolina Panthers Ty Detmer....currently is the Offensive Coordinator for his alma mater BYU Cougars (may be in line for a college HC job) Spergon Wynn...is an energy broker in Houston
Opal312
So does this mean Cody Kessler ends up selling potato peelers in the Mall? Just kidding! I watch tons of college football and I'm going to keep an eye on several QB's this year. Even though I doubt the Browns would ever draft a franchise QB in my lifetime. I'm old and have been a Brownie since Paul Brown and Jim Brown. Even then we never had a franchise guy. Don't say Otto Graham cuz that's before my time. I like Cody Kessler's chances and Hogan too this year. They're the best we have. I'd take both over Jay Cutler but that's another story. The Gipper
Of the retired QBs, only Wynn and Delhomme do not have a current job in football....either coaching or announcing. Though I will have to check on Campbell and Wallace. Campbell, apparently is just "chilling" according to the report I saw. Spending time with his family. ( I suspect he can afford to do so given that he was likely vastly overpaid for his contributions to the game). Seneca Wallace is coaching High School football in Dallas. Opal312
Most of them are too old to play anyway. I like Kevin Hogan from Stanford. He was the winningest QB at that school. It isn't too unlikely that he starts at some point for the Browns this season. I wish him and Kessler well.
mjp28
Amazing how many retired NFL guys like that 17+ week announcing or analyst gig or individual team announcer or the NCAA TV or radio route, not bad work for NFL careers that might not last that long plus it might be fun. The much longer season but less physically demanding MLB career guys also like the TV and radio work but many retire out to coach their kids teams also not a bad gig. Coaching or managing can be unusual many stars don't seem to end up there compared to more average (less career paid?) players.
Tour2ma
DelHomme is 41. Wynn is only 38, but last played in 2001... tempus fugit...
mjp28
Just ran across this thread from 2016 so is Baker Mayfield the answer to this question? Great start in 2018 maybe we will have the answer in 2020.

Great start in 2018 maybe we will have the answer in 2020. Baker is the first QB to start all 16 games for the Browns since Couch did it in 2001. So, give him credit for that. mjp28
You can see the drop off from 2018 to 2019 but hopefully much of that is correctable.
