1. Only 6 current NFL teams are older/were in existence when the Pittsburgh franchise was formed in 1933. Name these 6.

Hint: Eagles came into being the same year. They do not count here.

Bears, Lions, Packers, Giants, Washington, Jacksonville

Highlighted teams are right. Got 5 of 6.

2. Despite being a hotbed of college football and semi-pro football both pre and post creation of the NFL in 1920, Pittsburgh did not get an NFL team until 1933. Why was that?

Didn't he run a casino? Or a horse racing track?

Not a casino, but yes, he ran horses though at the time he did not own a track.

(now....some of his sons both run a track and a casino in Tampa I believe...that was why they had to divest themselves of their interest in the Steelers....and that is when Jimmy Haslam came to own a piece of them)

So, that is one half of the answer.

5. Where did Art Rooney attend college? (note: not certain he actually graduated)

6. Who was the Steelers very first NFL draft pick in the first NFL draft in 1936?

Byron White? NO

Steagles NO

B. Also during the war period, like the Cleveland Browns of the 1996-1998 period, one current NFL franchise suspended it field operations for at least one year, but did come back to play later (and continues to play) What team was this?

Cardinals? There was the Pitt-Cards

NO, not counting that....they still played with a truncated combined team....but they still played.

11. In the period of 1949-1957 the Steelers drafted 3 QBs who ended up making the PFHOF. Name these 3 QBs.

Byron Wizzer White? Bubby Brister? Dick Lane?

NO...of those you name only Brister was a QB....from the early 90s.

12. A. The Steelers 1974 draft is the only time in history that a team has drafted 4 players that went on to the PFHOF. Name these 4 players.

Webster Lambert Swann Stallworth Check

B. Only 2 other teams in history have take 3 players in a single draft that later made the HOF. Name these teams and years.

Chud 1, Pettine 2, Hue 1. That would be 4 if you're including Hue who has not completed a year yet, but its safe to assume he will.

#10 I got right there Gip. It was the Steagles.

NO, it was not. Read the question. I asked what the "official" name of the team was that year. Steagles WAS an unofficial nickname for that team because it combined the Pitt/Phil. teams, but officially, they were never listed as that.

Kind of a trick question, admittedly.

Here is Trivia about the Steelers/Browns. Mostly Steelers See what you can do with this. Steeler fans welcome to try. Remember, honor system. Answer what you can from memory. If you don't know an answer, let it go and let someone else try to get it.

Not impressed by Steeler fans knowledge of their own team's history. Only 1 guy tried anything.

Answers:

1. Only 6 current NFL teams are older/were in existence when the Pittsburgh franchise was formed in 1933. Name these 6.

Hint: Eagles came into being the same year. They do not count here.

Cardinals, Bears, Packers, Giants, Lions, Redskins. As noted, Eagles and Steelers came in together.

2. Despite being a hotbed of college football and semi-pro football both pre and post creation of the NFL in 1920, Pittsburgh did not get an NFL team until 1933. Why was that?

Prohibition to a certain extent. The "Blue Laws" in PA were so stringent as to not allow any sporting events to be held on Sundays (so much as allowing drinking). And Sunday was when the NFL played. When Prohibition went away, so did a lot of Blue Laws...at least of this nature. The Frankford Yellow Jackets team located in Philly played most of their home games on Saturdays.

3. In the Steelers first 39 years, 1933-1971, how many winning seasons did they have?

8 years. (they even made the playoffs once: 1947)

4. Early on in their existence, running the Steelers was, for Art Rooney Sr. merely a sideline activity to his two other main occupations. What were those occupations?

He ran and bet on horses and he promoted boxing matches. (but, no, he never owned a track as far as I know). In one day he won the equivalent of 300K betting on the ponies. He actually was a good boxer himself, having tried out for the 1920 Olympics.

5. Where did Art Rooney attend college? (note: not certain he actually graduated)

Indiana of Pennsylvania. Isn't that the same as Zombo?

6. Who was the Steelers very first NFL draft pick in the first NFL draft in 1936?

William Shakespeare. Yes, that was his name. But, like Jay Berwanger, the #1 overall pick on that draft....he never played pro ball.

7. FYI, it was a head coach of the Pittsburgh Panthers....later to become a Steelers HC that was a mentor to Paul Brown and from whom PB adapted some of his systems into his own. Who was this Pitt/Steelers HC?

Jock Sutherland. He played for the semi pro Massillon Tigers at the same time that Paul Brown was going to high school there, and coached at Pitt. And, as mentioned, he was a mentor to PB. He became Steelers HC in 1946/47, but never met PB on the field....at least not on the professional field as he and PB coached in different leagues. He mostly coached at Pitt, and I don't know if they squared off when PB was at Ohio State.

8. The Pittsburgh team was originally named the Pirates, after the local MLB team. What year did they change it to the Steelers?

1940

9. True or False: At one point Art Rooney actually sold the Steelers to a buyer who intended to move the team to New York or Boston?

True. At the end of the 1940 season Rooney sold the (now named) Steelers to Alexis Thompson who was contemplating a move of the team to Boston or NYC. Rooney took the proceeds of the sale and bought a 1/2 interest in the Philadelphia Eagles, and he and Bert Bell became co-owners of that team. But, Rooney had regrets, and the next year he and Bell agreed to "swap" their Eagles franchise for the Steeler franchise. (Similar to later when Robert Irsay and Carol Rosenbloom swapped franchises, Rams for Colts). While the swapped franchises, oddly, they did not swap corporate names. For the next 5 years, the actual corporate entity that owned the Pittsburgh Steelers was...."The Philadelphia Eagles, Inc. dba The Pittsburgh Steelers". The Eagles actually did business under a different coroporate name. In that 5 years somewhere, Bert Bell agreed to sell his share of "The Steelers" back to Rooney, and he agreed to repurchase The Eagles from Thompson...and did.

10. A. During WWII what official name did the contracted/combined Pittsburgh/Philadelphia team go by?

To follow up on the above, for one year during WWII, the situation got to the point that for a bit anyway Bell and Rooney elected to combine their teams due to lack of players (all of them going to war). They were officially the "Phil-Pitt Eagles". The Steeler name went away for that one year. Yes, unofficially they were nicknamed the "Steagles", appropriately, but officialy, they were The Eagles.

B. Also during the war period, like the Cleveland Browns of the 1996-1998 period, one current NFL franchise suspended it field operations for at least one year, but did come back to play later (and continues to play) What team was this?

The Cleveland Rams. Again, due to the difficulties of the war, the Rams suspended play for the 1943 season.....and get this.....One of the big reasons was because the Cleveland Rams owner, Dan Reeves, was Drafted to serve in the military!!!

So, 1996-98 isn't the first time a Cleveland team suspended operations. But, unlike the Browns who have had suckage ever since their suspension....the Rams won the NFL title their second year back in 1945.

11. In the period of 1949-1957 the Steelers drafted 3 QBs who ended up making the PFHOF. Name these 3 QBs.

Jim Finks...who was a QB, but is in the HOF as an administrator. Plus John Unitas and Len Dawson.

12. A. The Steelers 1974 draft is the only time in history that a team has drafted 4 players that went on to the PFHOF. Name these 4 players.

Lambert, Swann, Stallworth, Webster

B. Only 2 other teams in history have take 3 players in a single draft that later made the HOF. Name these teams and years.

The 1957 Cleveland Browns. Drafted Jim Brown, Gene Hickerson...and Henry Jordan (but was traded to the Packers)

The 1964 Dallas Cowboys. Mel Renfro, Bob Hayes, and Roger Staubach.

Bonus: A. What has been the duration of service for the last 3 Steelers head coaches? in years.

47 years

B. What has been the duration of service for the last 3 Browns head coaches? In years.

3.5 years....hoping to make it to 4 with Hue.
