Guest Aloysius
Here's an interesting discussion of how difficult it is to start a business in the West Bank. I don't get how any of this makes Israel more safe. It deprives Israel of a Palestinian business elite that wouldn't be sympathetic to the more hostile elements in Palestinian society. And it forestalls the development of a middle class that'd be more interested in advancing economically than sticking to maximalist political aims. From what I can tell, the only reason Israel needs checkpoints within the West Bank is to protect the settlers living there. Which is a shame, since many of those settlements won't survive the peace deal most Israelis hope for. And in the meantime, you get a situation in which eighteen year old Israeli soldiers get to decide whether a Palestinian supermarket gets restocked or not. It just doesn't make any sense.
