A Challenge Left on the Field...

I was noting this in the Mobile Tavern (to no effect). I th-ought I was right then. I am convinced I was  correct now.

Here's the situation. About midway thru the 3rd.... we're down 28-14... Kizer has just been picked deep in Colt territory to end a promising drive.

Brisket soon after passes to Doyle who bobbles the ball before pinning it to the side of his helmet and his right shoulder pad. He is tackled hard by Nassib and Kirk, the ball ends up on the ground and covered by Kirk... IIRC. It was ruled "incomplete."

At the time I thought, "That's a catch because had he gone to the ground with the ball in that position and been touched, then it would have been called a catch."

Later I saw this TD catch by OBJ vs. the Iggles. If it's good enough for control in Philly... obj01.jpg.7d49c69722c37ccff460f73b32d055af.jpg

Was the lack of a challenge determinative? Dunno, but it was potentially a change in momentum back into our favor. Now we'll never know...

I think the issue is the "what is a catch" and "what isn't a catch" is so vague and confusing that its not called consistently across all the games.   As someone who watches all the games every Sunday, it's something that is very noticeable.

I don't think instant replay belongs in the game. It slows the game down, and officials have been looking over their shoulders for years now.

The Dez Bryant "non-catch" in Green Bay several seasons ago in the playoffs should have ended replay for good.

A billion dollar industry, they have refs in peep show booths or a 12" tablet. Not a good look.

When I run for President in 2024, I vow to abolish replay and get the Ratbirds out of the AFC North.

And that's fine... we see different things.

Personally I saw:

  • ball control by virtue of it being juggled, but then pinned to his body, followed by...
  • "a football move" in his beginning to get up off the ground and turning toward the direction he needed to go.

True, but what is different this season is that all reviews are done in the NFL's NYC HQ. So whatever the criteria is for a catch, we should get more consistency out of the review process. So at least in this case the issue I see is that both examples did not enter that process.

Whereas OBJ's TD did, automatically. Ours did not
