Cleveland Browns welcome back Josh Cribbs, wait for Phil Dawson

by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter

Wednesday May 27, 2009, 10:52 AM

BEREA -- Josh Cribbs is in, but Phil Dawson remains out from Browns minicamp.

After skipping last week's voluntary minicamp because of a contract dispute, Cribbs has participated in the first two sessions of this week's camp. But Dawson, the only full-time kicker the Browns have had since their expansion rebirth in 1999, is still absent.

Like Cribbs, Dawson is seeking a new contract.

"It's a voluntary minicamp with all these guys," coach Eric Mangini said with a shrug.

Mangini didn't offer any other commentary on Dawson's absence, but he did say that replacement kicker Parker Douglass has taken advantage of his opportunity.

Mangini spoke Wednesday before his team got on the practice field.

On other matters:

• Mangini said that while Brady Quinn "took the first rep of the first practice" last week, Derek Anderson and the other quarterbacks have rotated with the first team. The rotation schedule had Quinn again with the first team today.

• Mangini said that he is looking for the best grouping of players on the right side of the offensive line and it will come from a combination of Floyd Womack, Ryan Tucker and John St. Clair. He said Tucker has worked at both guard and tackle.

• Mangini said Cribbs won't start seeing time on defense until his offensive niche is carved out.

• Mangini said the acquisition of Rod Hood was done to improve depth and competition at the cornerback spot. He said that players could be added at other positions.

"He's played inside, outside, he's started games, been productive," Mangini said. "So that competition will be there."

Mangini also praised Eric Barton's smarts, both in terms of his football intelligence and his natural intelligence. But when Grossi asked him if run defense was Barton's forte, Mangini seemed to reject that notion, instead saying that making sure all eleven guys line up properly is Barton's forte.

So while Barton may not look all that impressive on film, it could be that his field general abilities will make him a key addition to our defense. And if that's the case, he may have that SILB spot locked down, which means Veikune would start out at OLB.

Here's a report from practice:

Observations from the side… - Fred Greetham

On Wednesday, the first group to line up on offense in 11-on-11 was Mike Furrey and Braylon Edwards at wide receiver. Robert Royal at tight end with Joe Thomas and John St. Clair at the tackles and Eric Steinbach and Floyd Womack at the guards. Hank Fraley was the center and Jamal Lewis was the running back with Lawrence Vickers at fullback. Brady Quinn was the quarterback.

Quinn threw a deep touchdown pass to Lance Leggett and Martin Rucker made a nice catch for another score…Rookie sixth-round draft choice Don Carey made a nice leaping interception in team drills.

Inside source says:

That after Mangini witnessed DA in the 2 minute drill he immediatley called his sponsor and went to the nearest AA meeting.

DA had to restart the 2 minute drill 6 times, he threw 4 INT's & Fumbled the ball twice in which he recovered one of them. However he did manage to throw one bomb on 3rd & 42 to BE but Edwards dropped the ball.

There also is a mini video on the Cleveland Browns website that has mini camp footage. J Norwood looks really fast and if he adds 5-10 lbs he could be a really nasty slot guy for us. I wish they had some more footage of MoMass so we can actually see him whooping ass.
