THE BROWNS BOARD

Alejandro Villanueva

In Spanish NFL media there have been many news referring to Alejandro Villanueva, LT of the Pittsburgh Steelers, as he is the first Spaniard to be selected for the Pro Bowl in the history, and what is his story and many more stuff.

My natural skeptic mind doesn't allow me to be very cheerful about it, because being a sport with very few followers in Spain, it doesn't surprise me that they praise a fellow Spaniard in such an achievement.

Therefore, I would like to know your opinion about him, mostly about his performance. I don't know how much has influenced the votation what he did during the protests or being an Afghanistan veteran, but I've seen that he has been selected also by players and the media.

Is he a Spaniard....or just Hispanic?

As far as opinion....he is a Steeler, so he is a vile, evil bastard (even if he isn't...which I doubt he is.  Everything I hear about him is that he is a super dude).

He IS helped...football wise, by the fact that he may have the best OL coach in the league coaching him.  (Munchak)

Spaniard. Both parents are from Spain (Andalucía and Basque Country). His father worked in different places as a militar, and Al was born in USA, but was raised in Spain in his childhood.

All I know about the dude is that at the height of the kneeling scandal, he stood at the entrance to the field all by himself with his hand over his heart while the National Anthem played...... Dude is alright in my book, and the NFL needs a lot more like him and a lot less like some of the ones they already have.

Actually Villanueva is in good company surrounded by players just like him. Steeler players are upstanding citizens, principled, and possess high moral standards.

Probably true....it is the fact that they have a Steeler logo on their uniform that sends them to a dark place.

Wasn’t his appearance during the anthem an accident about which he was embarrassed and sorry?

Not as I remember...

While the rest of the team stayed in the tunnel, he was on the field with their blessings. They understood where he was coming from...

As for his play at LT... he's good, but not yet great. He's improved every year he's been in the league which has only been since 2015.

What's interesting as hell is his path to playing OT in the NFL. At Army (Westpoint) he was a 220-ish TE (IIRC) who the coach had bulk up for the OL. He is athletic with good feet. The Steelers have been very patient with his development.

actually, he should be playing for a real football team, and not a WWE fake dirty cheapshot team...filled with players like troy pollywannacheapunu...who was a dirty cheapshot player in college. that is what the squealers generally try to find.

I think he said he had gotten lost or something (remember, the team changed their routine for that game) and thought the team might be on the field. So he went out there. Anthem was playing. So naturally, he stood for it. And IIRC, he said in an interview that he didn't mean to do it and he was embarrassed and he apologized.

The team was in the tunnel, and he wanted to be ahead so he could see the flag, so he was caught by the cameras all alone during the anthem. He wasn't lost but what he didn't want to do is to show any difference with his teammates.

He didn't like the use of his image, either and that's why he was embarrased and apologized.
