The Finalists for Induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame have been announced.  Selection will take place...I believe the day before the Super Bowl.  Here they are:

Ray Lewis LB

Terrell Owens WR

Randy Moss WR

Steve Hutchinson OL

Brian Urlacher LB

Tony Boselli OL

Isaac Bruce WR

Brian Dawkins DB

Joe Jacoby OL

Egerrin James RB

Allan Faneca OL

Kevin Mawae Ol

Ty Law DB

John Lynch DB

Everson Walls DB

From the Senior Committee the following were nominated:

Jerry Kramer

Robert Brazie

From the Contributor List:

Bobby Beathard

I believe that the Committee is to select from between 4 and 7 people to be inducted.

Name your choices.

I think my Choices would be:

Lewis....for his play on the field....but I would not be surprised if he would be deferred at least one year for his role in a double homicide.  Honestly...I think that is the way I would vote if I were on the committee.

Moss

Owens

Jacoby

Lynch

Edg. James

Jerry Kramer.    Kramer has been a Finalist more times than anyone ever has without having been inducted. It is an oversight long overdue...in my opinion.

I think Moss was better than TO, but they both deserve to be in. Jerry Kramer is long overdue, and Brazile was indeed a stud.

So that means they'll put yet another Steeler in, Faneca, just to piss me off.

There are a plethora of OL  among this group.   Including Kramer, 6 of the finalists are OL.   It may be there year....as there are no QBs at all....just one RB.

There are also 4 DBs and 3 WRs.  And two worthy MLBs.   If they do give Lewis a "time out"....maybe Urlacher makes it now.

On Faneca....I hear you...but he has rated pretty high up among all OL in history.

In:

  • Ray Lewis LB... my MLB GOAT
  • Randy Moss WR... in the conversation for WR GOAT.
  • Steve Hutchinson OL... simply one of the best interior OL of all-time... and arguably THE GOAT inside.
  • Brian Dawkins DB... one of the best FS of all-time... and played a long, long time.

Honorable mentions...

  • Brian Urlacher LB... toughest omission and first alternate who is hurt by the presence of my MLB GOAT.
  • Tony Boselli OL... great, great LT that would make a stronger GOAT case, but for injury... and the existence of HoF LT Anthony Munoz.

From the Senior Committee the following were nominated: I'd let them both in...

  • Jerry Kramer... may be the only OL legend from the old Pack not in the HoF?
  • Robert Brazile... Good to see Robert get some love. He was a fixture at ROLB in the Oliers' 3-4 for a decade... and a physical specimen.

From the Contributor List:

  • Bobby Beathard... sure... why not...

Oh BTW for a complete MLB HOF balloting results see the TRIBE BOARD, congratulations to Jim Thome.

I never understood the timeline on this thing. So they announce the nominees now. Pick them in a couple weeks. Then don't actually do the ceremony until August?

Interesting that you have at least two of those four who had off the field issues. I thought that according to some here, it is impossible to be a good NFL player with that going on.

I always thought Jerry Kramer was the key to their whole offense in running that OL on pulling guard sweeps. Should have been first in IMO.

And how come the King of Stickum, Lester the Molester Hayes, is not yet in the HOF?

I think the Finalists were actually announced in December.  I just got around to seeing them and posting them.  But, yes, they are announced at the Super Bowl...I think, and yes, the induction takes place in August in conjunction with the Hall of Fame Game.  It has always been that way...as far as the induction....not sure about the timing of the announcement.

FYI....Baseball is just about the same.  Note:   those inducted were announce just yesterday...and those ceremonies don't take place until like the end of July?

Maybe because once he was prohibited from using the stickum.....he wasn't very good.    I don't know if it was the fact that stickum made him good....or if it was a psychological crutch for him  where he lost it when that crutch was taken away.

Moss grew up and Ray Ray got scared straight. Maybe Lewis got away with something... maybe he was guilty of nothing... I've no idea. But in any case he clearly made the most of any second chance he got.

IMO... TO remained an a$$ his entire career.

Who was the 4th?

Purely psychological. He actually was a very good player, but he had that stuff gobbed even on his socks so he could get more during a game. Take away the crutch and he lost confidence. Funny that the gloves they use now are just about as effective as stickum was then, except of course for the Browns.

Gloves only help if you catch with your hands.... whereas stickum helped anywhere it was.

Freddy Bilitnikoff(?) loved him some stickum, too.

Still trying to wrap my head around Lester Hayes... the 2nd best CB in Raider history behind the very great HoFer, Mark Haynes... not being very good....

Nope...

Can't do it...

Ray Lewis MLB GOAT? Sorry young 'un, you probably never saw a bunch of D-ick Butkus' games. That's why the College LB award is named after him...  Urlacher was probably 1\2 as good, and he made it in- so what does that tell you? I might even take another Bear- Mike Singletary ahead of "the Little Criminal". If you think I'm going Cal on you- maybe so. Ray's posse killed a couple guys and Lewis (after he agreed to testify) couldn't remember what happened. Sure.

Nope, they got voted in now. Yes, "official" ceremony is in Canton before the HOF Game. Good thing Modell is never getting in. It's an hour drive from Cleveland, and we got truckloads of rotten tomatoes ready for his induction.

These kids have 0 clue how badass Butkus was..... I remember  the second browns game i went to... It was Cleveland and Chicago.. Poor Mike Phipps was a beat up rag doll by games end...... Butkus was in our backfield on every play... Ray Lewis?.. GTFOH .. Ray Lewis couldnt carry Butkus's Jock!

EDIT: Butkus was even smaller than Ray Lewis... The guy was a pure warrior beast!

Hardest hitter ever? Certainly in the conversation. "Every time he hit you he tried to put you in the cemetery, not the hospital."

Appreciate the delusional underestimation of my age, but I stand by my assessment.

How many Butkis games are in your bunch, h? Three?

Butkus, Nitchke and others were great old(er) stars back in the day but R.Lewis was pretty good....and on a great D, remember that too.

So hard to compare generations but interesting chit-chat.

I would have taken Hutchinson over Urlacher, otherwise good class. Surprised Kramer never made it in as a senior nominee before.

He was the leader of the Houston Oilers defenses that pushed the Steelers back during their dynasty. Outstanding player.

ok Its Robert Brazile now that name I remember well.... I remember the Browns had a Larry Brazile.. Wonder if they were related..

Not sure if they were related. Brazile was a beast in the late 70's and early 80's. Type of outside guy that could play in a 4-3 or 3-4 strongside. He could blitz, cover, and hit like a tank.

The guy that most people mixed him up with was Bobo Brazil.

30? there was never a more devastating force @ MLB than Butkus. Period. End of discussion. Notice the way he destroyed a pretty good Browns offense? If you schemed, you could take Ray out of a game. Couldn't do that with Butkus. Plus the Little Criminal was surrounded by a bunch of HOF talent- like Ed Reed. Not so Mr. Bear. Lewis might be best modern era, but pales in comparison to Butkus.
