Ryan Day is in the midst of overhauling Ohio State’s defensive coaching staff.

Bucknuts has learned that Greg Schiano will not return as the Buckeyes’ defensive coordinator. No one from within will be promoted to that role, so Day will soon be announcing someone from outside the program who will be in charge of OSU's defense.

Bucknuts has also learned that Greg Mattison will be added to Day’s staff. We have not confirmed in which capacity. Sources say that Mattison informed Michigan's players on Monday morning that he is leaving Ann Arbor. Mattison, 69, has been on the Wolverines' staff for the last eight seasons. From 2011-14, he was the defensive coordinator under Brady Hoke. From 2015-18, Mattison served as UM's defensive line coach. He also has extensive history as a linebackers coach.

Bucknuts has also learned Bill Davis will not return as Ohio State's linebackers coach.

We have confirmed OSU has reached out to Al Washington, but we have not confirmed if Washington is headed to his hometown of Columbus.

At this point, sources at Ohio State say it is still up in the air in terms of what will happen with OSU cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson. We will keep you posted on that.

As for Schiano, 52, he had been at Ohio State for three seasons (2016-18) including the last two as the Buckeyes' sole defensive coordinator. (He was co-DC/safeties coach when Luke Fickell was defensive coordinator in 2016.)  Schiano had a successful 11-year run as Rutgers' head coach from 2001-11, and was the Tampa Bay Buccaneeers' head coach from 2012-13. He took two years off from coaching (2014-15) after being fired by the Bucs, but collected every penny of his 5-year, $15 million contract..........CONTINUED IN LINK.....
