roach
i used to hate the guy, mainly because his kickoffs only reached the 20 yard line. But that was a long time ago. His leg has got stronger over time. His distance is darn good, and his accuracy has always been impressive. i hope they work this out.
Riffer X
Could be that time of year to have a moronic discussion on how the kicker sucks because he missed a couple in his career. Guest mz.
FG% is really the only kicker stat I look at because the team puts him in position to kick FG and PAT, so, on a shity O, the kicker simply gets less looks. That being said, here's what I look at for him, and those numbers look good (thanks for posting them, Riff): Highest Field Goal Percentage – Season (minimum 14 attempts) 93.10 Phil Dawson (2005); 27-29 92.86 Matt Stover (1994); 26-28 88.46 Lou Groza (1953); 23-26 88.00 Phil Dawson (2001); 22-25 87.88 Matt Stover (1995); 29-33 87.50 Matt Bahr (1983); 21-24 87.50 Don Cockroft (1974); 14-16 I believe he's 7th all time in accuracy right now. Browns2405
I like him a lot as a kicker.. I think he's been very beneficial for us. I don't want to say he is the most accurate kicker b/c the last time I heard anyone say that a kicker is the most accurate good ole' Vanderjagt missed a fg against the Steelers and they went on to Detroit if I'm not mistaken... SO with all that said I'll take Phil as he is...
roach
i saw him kick 4 of 5 from 65 yards at a practice. It was in Rochester, NY before a Browns/ Bills combined practice. He had a pretty good tailwind, and he was kicking with one of those ball holder thingies that they use off the ground. There was no rush- he was just kicking before the full team practice like kickers do. Obviously, conditions were good. But it was still fun to watch, and he knew he was putting on a show. The one that he missed was wide. Flugel hosted us. Tom, what year was that?
Riffer X
What are the stats against the NFL? lol. compare him to matt stover now please, not just when he was with the browns, teh lol You've managed to stick out a little cuz of your penchant for Planet Moronville. Did you happen to see where he ranks 7th all time with 100 plus attempts? Phew, let's get the friggen season going already, the brightness some of these boys possess is shear brilliance. Here's a list where he's 9th but 100 minimum attempts is not needed. Mark O
How old is he? 35 or 36? While kickers careers can last quite a bit longer than every other position, how much time does he really have left in the NFL and he's going to piss away one of those seasons over money? Screw him...he's a kicker for god's sake not a football player.

Mark O
Is he holding out for more money when he already has a contract? If the answer is yes...then I just might. Pontbriand at least gets hit when he plays. Kickers can be replaced...

Pointbrand is above reproach. Dawson has been a good kicker for the Browns over the years, he is underrated.
Mark O
Well excuse me Mr. Wizard......great he's 33 years old...again my question is he really going to piss away one of the few NFL seasons he has left on a contract dispute? If he's willing to sit out the year then god bless him...sit on your ass and not play but I would bet a lot of money that he will regret that decision for the rest of his life. Kickers are almost always the highest scoring player on every team so that doesn't impress me...
sisky fringo
Big Head's not some soccer fag prima dona, he was a linebacker back in the day and only started kicking when he quit growing. making those lists as high as he does while kicking in CLE should pay a premium for sure. that list where he's 9th, if you remove guys who kicked for 4 years or less he's 4th overall, with a 40 yr old Stover at #3. Stover is still kicking at 40, 7 years older than Phil who has only gotten better and more seasoned with his age so IMO it's best to keep a guy like that happy for as long as possible. i hope kok/man isn't like that guy who drives across town to get gas 3 cents cheaper per gal, when they're only buying 15 gallons anyway. generally you get what you pay for and unless he's asking for the world that investment is well worth the money. Zombo
This is a no-brainer. When you've got a good kicker you keep him. 33 is not too old for a four year contract. Remember when we let Matt Bahr go too early for Jerry Kauric? Brilliant. Joe Montana would have 5 Super Bowls if it wasn't for Matt Bahr. Vegasdogg
I agree It's one position we never really had to worry about. It was always one less thing. Just sign him. Exactly. People think a guy like Phil can be replaced - until you go looking for a kicker.
PlaygroundLegend
dawson kicked the most amazing field goal ever! Both FG's in this game are great, but the long one is rediculous, with all that wind and snow in the air, and on the ground....
grimmreaper3
I hope this isn't just another instance where Mangini's trying to make a statement. Give Dawson a contract. Kicker is one place where we are among the elite. Don't screw that up.
sisky fringo
i always thought Dawson to be good locker room peeps too. as the longest retained current Brownie he has opinions for sure, and i wonder what turned Phil off from the get-go with this regime. this is consistent with his decision to miss voluntaries this summer and he's one of the few not totally buying in. maybe he just feels undervalued? he's a pro though so i have no doubt he won't be a detriment to the team. off topic, watching that clip i saw DA's oven mitt--had forgotten about it. i bet he's more blue-collar and flannel wearing than we realize. anyone know what he hunts? Riffer X
I swear I am going to have an anuerism ...... seriously. I've compared him to stover, and all the hot sexy current names people want to throw out there now adays as "better kickers with more leg". The stats show there really isn't that huge a difference. and then you look where Dawson get's to kick for half of his games. and the fair weather kickers start to look even worse I challenge all of you. If dawson is here this year which I hope he is. Instead of tailgating so long. Go into the game early....real early....it's then when you will be able to see Phil out there. And he's not just going through a routine of taking practice kicks. He's studying every aspect of the wind, weather, and other conditions that will affect his kicks that game. It's that preparation that allows him to go out there in a game like the buffaloe game, and not even THINK about how the weather is affecting his kick, he already has that figured out. and from there it is execution. I rarely see kickers from other teams doing that kind of prep...and in the buffalo game. they never even considered kicking from the distance dawsom made his from. It's also worth mentioning that despite his command of terrible weather conditions, he is really, really good at onside kicks.
Sez.EJ
Jim Donavan "And the Browns are on the doorstep of making the playoffs" Yea how did that work out for you Jimbo? Maybe you should send that clip to Mangini and note that kick could be the difference of playoffs or not.. or maybe even his job.. Pay the man.(Phil). I agree he is a GREAT bad weather kicker. Check this out... Monday, November 16 vs BALTIMORE RAVENS Sunday, November 22 @ Detroit Lions Sunday, November 29 @ Cincinnati Bengals Sunday, December 6 vs SAN DIEGO CHARGERS Thursday, December 10 vs PITTSBURGH STEELERS Sunday, December 20 @ Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, December 27 vs OAKLAND RAIDERS Sunday, January 3 vs JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS C All but one (detroit) of those games from Nov. 16th on are potentially cold/bad weather games. I love it. That's football weather. How nice ofthem to give us teams from California and Florida at home to end the season.
ballpeen
I have never bought in to the idea that because our guys play in Cleveland they are somehow better cold weather players. I think we are kidding ourselves if we think that is some sort of advantage. That said, Dawson is a very good kicker who is proven at the tough kicks. Toss him a bone and make him happy.
