Training Camp trivia

Here is some trivia in anticipation of the opening of the season, though this is basically just Browns and other football trivia, having nothing to do with training camp. A good Browns fan should do fairly well on these:

1. What Super Bowl winning quarterbacks have also played for the Browns?

2. Who had the longest pass reception in Super Bowl history?

3. What Quarterback holds the career record for most passing yards in the Super Bowl (career, not single game)?

4. Choosing only from the following list, which of these WRs led the Browns in receptions the most years: Dante Lavelli, Reggie Rucker, Webster Slaughter, Mac Speedie, Paul Warfield.

5. Who led the Browns in rushing yards the most number of years, a Mr. Brown or a Mr. Pruitt?

6. Which of the following never led the Browns in rushing yards: Boyce Green, Ernie Green, William Green.

Part B: Which of the above had the most career rushing yards?

7. Choosing only from the following list, which of the following QBs led the Browns in passing yards the most years: Tim Couch, Bill Nelsen, Milt Plum, Frank Ryan, Vinny Testaverde.

8. Who holds the Browns record for most points scored in a season?

9. Who holds the Browns record for most rushing attempts in a season?

10. Who holds the Browns record for most career punt return yards: Josh Cribbs, Dino Hall, Leroy Kelley, Gerald McNeil, Dennis Northcutt?

11. Choosing only from the following list, which person coached the Browns in the most seasons: Bill Belichick, Butch Davis, Sam Rutigliano, Marty Schottenheimer, Nick Skorich.

12. True or False. Against the following "defunct" franchises, the Browns combined actually "suffered" more ties than losses: the original (AAFC) Baltimore Colts, the Brooklyn Dodgers, the original (AAFC) Buffalo Bills, the Chicago Hornets, the LA Dons, the Miami Seahawks, and the New York Yanks.

13. True or false. Dick LeBeau was born in London, Ontario.

14. True or false. The two top rated academic colleges in the state of Ohio, Kenyon and Oberlin, have each never had an "alumnus" play in the NFL.

15. I am hereafter listing in alphabetical order 11 colleges. Ten of them represent the Top 10 schools that have sent the most "alumni" (though some certainly did not actually graduate) on to play in the NFL. Name the college that does NOT belong in that top ten group:

Alabama, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn St., Pitt, Tennessee, UCLA, USC

Answers:

1. The Super Bowl "winning QBs" that also played for the Browns were: Trent Dilfer, Mark Rypien, and Len Dawson. I do not include Bernie as he was not the starting QB in the Super Bowl. He had only a cup of coffee in the SB, thus I don't really count him as the "winning QB".

2. The longest pass reception in the Super Bowl was make by Muhsin Muhammed of the Carolina Panthers. 85 yards.

3. The QB that has thrown for the most yards in the Super Bowl in a career is Kurt Warner with 1156 yards in 3 games. Montana had 1142 in 4 and Elway had 1128 in 5 games.

4. Who led the Browns in receptions the most years out of the following: It was Speedie with 5 seasons leading the Browns.

Slaughter, Lavelli, Rucker and Warfield each led the Browns 4 times. (Speedie does not have the most seasons leading the Browns in receptions. That is Ozzie Newsome)

5. Who has led the Browns in rushing the most years, a Mr. Brown or a Mr. Pruitt? Indeed it is a trick question of sorts, as the answer is a Mr. Brown has led Browns in rushing 10 times and a Mr. Pruitt has led the Browns 10 times. It is a tie.

Jim Brown led the Browns 9 times, and Ken Brown led the Browns once (1973). Greg Pruitt and Mike Pruitt each led the Browns in rushing 5 times each.

6. Which of the following never led the Browns in rushing, Boyce Green, Ernie Green, or William Green? The answer is Ernie Green. Boyce led the Browns one year, William 2 years. (Ernie was primarily Jim Browns blocking back.)

But despite that, yes....it was Ernie Green who gained the most career yards of these three.

7. Who led the Browns the most years in passing yards amongst the list given: It was Frank Ryan with 6 years. Plum, Nelsen, and Couch led the Browns 4 years, Testaverde 3 years. Of course Otto Graham led the Browns the most years with 10. Also Kosar and Sipe led the Browns more than the group given.

8. Who holds the Browns record for scoring the most points? It is Jim Brown with 126 points on 21 TDs in 1965. Phil Dawson's best year was 120 points which is tied with Cockroft who also had 120 points one year for the second most points scored by a Brown.

9. Who holds the Browns record for most rushing attempts? Yes, it is Reuben Droughns with 309 attempts in 2005. Jim Brown is second with 305 attempts in the 1961 season. Of course, note that in 1961 JB was only playing a 14 game schedule where in 2005 it was 16 games.

10. Who holds the Browns career record for punt return yardage? It is Dennis Northcutt. More than Cribbs, McNeil, Dino Hall or Leroy Kelley who trail him.

11. Who coached the Browns the most years from the list given? It was Sam Rutigliano who coached in 7 seasons with the Browns. Belichick and Schottenheimer coached in 5 seasons, and Skorich and Davis in 4. (Paul Brown, of course, with 17 seasons leads that overall category)

12. True or False: Against the following defunct franchises combined, the Browns "suffered" more ties than losses: original Colts, original Bills, Brooklyn Dodgers, Chicago Hornets, LA Dons, Miami Seahawks, and New York Yanks.

The answer is TRUE. Against these franchises combined the Browns were 42-2-3, the only 2 losses being to the Dons. (some of you appeared to read the question wrong)

13. True or False, Dick LeBeau was born in London, Ontario? FALSE. Yes he was born in London, Ohio.

14. True or False. Kenyon and Oberlin, the top two academic schools in the state of Ohio have each never had an alum play in the NFL. FALSE. Kenyon had 2 alum play in the NFL, and Oberlin 1. These guys go way, way back to the 20s or 30s, but they did play in the league.

15. Which of the schools listed do not belong in the Top 10 of sending players to the NFL? Here is the count on the 11 schools:

Notre Dame 499

USC 421

Ohio St. 368

Michigan 325

Penn St. 312

Nebraska 303

Tennessee 284

Oklahoma 282

Pitt 273

UCLA 267

It is Alabama that does not belong, they have only sent 250 players to the NFL. In fact, on this list, there are several other schools ahead of Alabama including Wisconsin, Texas, and Georgia.

Question 1: Don't forget former Buckeye Mike Tomczak!

Someone elsewhere suggested that Jim McMahon should be included on this list as, apparently, for a part of a preseason he was on the Browns roster...even having been in a team picture. But McMahon's records do not show him ever having played a down in a regular season game with the Browns.

Really? I forget. I thought he was on the field for the Browns at some point. Must have gotten hurt or something.
