AP NewsBreak: Palin implicated in ethics probe

I guess stealing money is part of the whole "family values" and "Real American" thang.

By RACHEL D'ORO, Associated Press Writer – 42 mins ago

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – An independent investigator has found evidence that Gov. Sarah Palin may have violated ethics laws by accepting private donations to pay her legal debts, in the latest legal distraction for the former vice presidential candidate as she prepares to leave office this week.

The report obtained by The Associated Press says Palin is securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust, set up by supporters.

An investigator for the state Personnel Board says in his July 14 report that there is probable cause to believe Palin used or attempted to use her official position for personal gain because she authorized the creation of the trust as the "official" legal defense fund.

The practical effect of the ruling on Palin will be more financial than anything else. The report recommends that Palin refuse to accept payment from the defense fund, and that the complaint be resolved without a formal hearing before the Alaska Personnel Board.

The fund aims to help Palin pay off debts stemming from multiple ethics complaints against her, most of which have been dismissed. Palin says she owes more than $500,000 in legal fees, and she cited the mounting toll of the ethics probes as one of the reasons she is leaving office.

A call seeking comment from her lawyer and an e-mail to her spokeswoman were not immediately returned.

Palin's friends and supporters created the Alaska Fund Trust in April, limiting donations to $150 per person. Organizers declined to say how much it has raised, and had hoped to raise about $500,000. A Webathon last month brought in about $130,000 in pledges.

In his report, attorney Thomas Daniel said his interpretation of the ethics act is consistent with common sense.

An ordinary citizen facing legal charges is not likely to be able to generate donations to a legal defense fund, he wrote. "In contrast, Governor Palin is able to generate donations because of the fact that she is a public official and a public figure. Were it not for the fact that she is governor and a national political figure, it is unlikely that many citizens would donate money to her legal defense fund."

The ethics complaint was filed by Eagle River resident Kim Chatman shortly after the fund was created, alleging Palin was misusing her official position and accepting improper gifts.

Palin was given a copy of the investigator's report a week ago, Chatman said Tuesday.

"It's an absolute shame that she would continue to keep the Alaska Fund Trust Web site up and running," Chatman told the AP.

At least 19 ethics complaints have been filed against Palin, most of them after she was named the running mate for GOP presidential candidate John McCain. Most of those have been dismissed, and Palin's office usually sends a news release with the announcement.

"She's not acknowledging the fact that the ethics complaint was credible," Chatman said. "When ethics complaints are dismissed, she's quick to publicly respond but this one, she's sitting on."

Wah wah wah waaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I can't tell if I want her to leave or stay. We've never seen anything like her.

I was on vacation when she gave her press conference and I had multiple people from both sides of the aisle emailing me and saying, "You really have to watch this video." And I resisted and put it off. I finally watched it in its entirety about a week ago and it blew my mind. She has the intellect of an 8th grade girl.

How could you take someone seriously who takes this woman seriously? Who wants this woman in a position of power? One's opinion on Palin is like a litmus test for gravitas.

Personally, I'd like to see a more serious, more policy-oriented Republican Party emerge from all of this, so part of me hopes she simply goes away. Mitt Romney is the biggest phony of my political lifetime and eternally cringeworthy, but at least he's a serious guy behind the scenes who has real-world skills. I wouldn't fear for my country with Romney at the helm.

On the other hand, I have a hard time believing the American people would elect Sarah Palin after all we've seen, she's great comedy, and it would mean another four years of Obama, so the other part of me is all for it. Or maybe she can start her own party and split the nutjobs from the serious Republicans.

So conflicted.

There is zero doubt in my mind that I want her to stick around. The reasons, of course, are completely self-serving, but who cares.

Nobody represents the current state of the GOP better, and more accurately, than she does. Dumb as dirt, uneducated, intensely afraid of the unknown, hypocritical, xenophobic. Plus, she seems to rally the troops we laugh at better than anyone.

You really don't have a clue do you??

I would bet if we compared education levels, republicans are far more educated than democrats...democrats have a far high ratio of people who haven't completed HS.

I urge you to look at this board as a sample.

And yeah...I hate to be the one to break it to you, but "completed high school" hasn't been a relevant gauge of educational achievement since, well, since you graduated high school.

That is nonsense. The education of America's youth is terrible compared to what it was even 20 years ago. Just because you have your cartoon degree from Syracuse doesn't make you a genius num nuts. Most children now adays wouldn't even compare to someone when I grew up in the late 60's early 70's. You have "failed mz the pussy". These kids have a terrible education. Even the so called "College Graduates". It is a joke.

First of all, I never claimed I was a "genius."

Second of all, "intelligence" and "education" are two separate entities. The former has to do with innate potential for learning/reasoning/etc., whereas the latter has to do with following through and actually putting in the necessary work to enhance and reach said potential. Palin has neither the education nor the intelligence, BTW.

Third of all, I got my MBA from Syracuse after deciding not to further pursue my PhD there. I went to undergrad at a much more highly-ranked school.

If I'm reading correctly, she violated ethics laws to pay for legal fees stemming from when the 1st round of ethics charges were dismissed? Ironic.

If that's the case, I kind of (kind of) feel for her. Having to pony up a ton of cash to prove you hadn't done anything wrong is definitely a nuisance especially when that 1st round of crap is politically motivated and (now) unsubstantiated.

Oh....mz the pussy...thanks....when I graduated HS, it actually meant something to graduate from HS...and for the record, I hold 2 degrees past that.

Just a FYI

You really are clueless.

I wasn't trying to be funny.

Actually, it's quite sad. Other than Leg, who is quite Liberal socially, take a gander at the little slice of GOP backers who come around here. Seriously, go ahead.

Whooh there mz the pussy. Some here take a look from both sides. Yes your comments are educated and well put together, but all in all, for the same reasons as the GOP'ers hug Bush's nuts, you do the same and hug Crat nuts. Be honest.

I brought this point up before, is it nature or nurture we lean left or right?

She's too polarizing and too comedic to have any real foot hold in the American political forum.

Yet she was the GOP VP candidate.

If you want to take a look at the education levels of the different voters there's plenty of evidence there that the more educated you are the more likely you are to vote Democratic. People with advanced degrees tend Democrat. And people on the lower end of the education spectrum tend Democrat. The people with high school and some college tend Republican, while college grads are about evenly split.

2008 was different. Obama won all education levels. He only really lost with white protestants/Evangelicals, church-goers, rural voters, and the elderly.

And there's your Republican Party, at least until something changes - rural, white, Christian, and old.

As for Sarah Palin, is there anyone in here who would like to see her run in 2012, or would like to see her be the nominee in 2012?

8 years of liberal arts, is going to fook with your head.

Its a shame that people cannot make decisions for themselves when it comes to politics, they should go back and read a history book or two.

What the hell was this thread about anyways?

I forgot. Personal attacks on each other.

This is almost as bad as listening to a bunch of black comedians telling your mama jokes.

zzzzzzzzzz!!!!

But then again Liberals love to get some Palin, They are so scared of her it is almost comical.

If they think she is going to be the one to unseat their beloved fresh prince of Kenya obama they are looking in all the wrong direction. Romney is at a dead even tie in the polls with obama if the elections were held today.

And lost in a landslide.....your point?

In excess of FORTY-SIX MILLION people went out of their way back in November to vote for Sarah Palin as VP. And that's not counting the folks who supported her who were too stupid to find their polling place or just plain forgot it was Election Day.

If that doesn't frighten the shit out of you then I don't know what else to say...

Almost certainly.

I don't know that I buy that. I don't think many voted for the Obama ticket because Palin was on the ticket, and I don't think many decided not to vote at all because she was on the ticket.

I suppose some may have gone 3rd party, but again, I just don't think it was that many people.

She lost McCain a lot of independents. I don't think he was going to win no matter what, but she certainly didn't help him.
