Massaquoi is fighting for a starting spot. 2:10:09 pm QB Derek Anderson heated up on his team's third possession of the Brown and White scrimmage, throwing several completions. But he's had problems in the red zone during his career and this was no exception. He was intercepted by LB D'Qwell Jackson near the goal line. 2:09:00 pm LB D'Qwell Jackson, who is one of several certain Browns starters, dove to bat away a pass from QB Derek Anderson midway through the first quarter of today's Brown and White scrimmage. 2:07:29 pm New Browns OL Fred Weary is returning to the NFL after having a run-in with the Houston law. He was tasered and arrested at a traffic stop in November 2006. He sued the city for excessive force, but dropped the lawuit early this year. 2:06:49 pm Another name has been added to the mix at OL. OconRecon
First, huge thanks for the updates. Initial thoughts. 1. Mangini will not be upset with the last drive from Quinn. Ball control ending in a field goal attempt. Safe and threw it away on 3rd down to stay in FG range rather than a sack. 2. I'm starting to think Quinn is rusty as heck. I have never believed in the concept of sit on the side lines and learn. It's use it or lose it, and he hasn't been the guy in the big chair since his days at ND. We'll see how the internet opinion factory cranks up as the day wears on. ------ Addendum, this is weird. As I was typing, I just got a text from the Browns (anyone else sign up for those things?) with a photo of Quinn at family day. Just Quinn. Flugel
TWEETS (& RAPID REPORTS) BELOW: TheOBR DA intercpted by D Jackson at the goal line and returned to the 42 Look on the bright side folks - at least the defender was wearing a Browns' helmet. I'm not sure poor Dumb Ass is smart enough to understand that the srimmage means some Clevelnd Browns weren't his teammates today. Baby steps! It's only his 5th year in this league. Loverboy assures us he's got it all worked out. You CANNOT throw INTs or be careless with the football in the red zone. Two examples of this come to mind when we lost 10-6 to Indy and 10-6 to Pitt. How do you play BETTER defense than limiting a playoff team to 10 points? DA's red zone fumble vrs Indy went for 7 points so our defense really only gave up 3 points to Manning's offense right? We're now embarking upon DA's 4th season in Cleveland - and he's still just as mindless in the red zone. This guy simply isn't smart enough to learn from his experience. That's why he's regressed in 3 straight seasons of starts. If we let this guy do this a 4th straight year - shame on us. - Tom F.

He's careless with the football as evidenced by the Bungles game back in 07. We had three chances to get in the xxxxing endzone! Three, not one! Dumb ass had the chance to clinch the playoff. But alas, he just couldn't do it.

Riffer X
Brown Team rallies for 17-14 win Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 08.09.2009 The Brown Team rallied from a second-half, two-touchdown deficit to win the Brown and White Scrimmage Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium, 17-14. A 29-yard Phil Dawson field goal with 3:50 to go provided the winning margin. In a twist you don't see every day, Dawson missed a 48-yard game-tying attempt off the left upright for the White Team with 22 seconds left. An interception by Mike Adams - who lunged to catch a Brady Quinn pass that had popped in the air when Lance Leggett couldn't handle it - set up the winning points by putting the Brown Team on the White 30-yard line with 7:13 left. But the result wasn't as important as the fact that the Browns and just about every facet of the Browns' organization got a dress rehearsal with the preseason schedule set to kick off in just six days. A team with so many new parts looked comfortable and confident in front of a sun-soaked crowd Sunday afternoon. "It was a really productive day for us," Browns head coach Eric Mangini said. "I liked the amount of situations we got. You don't know whats going to come up over the course of a game and there were lots of shifts of momentum. "I think it was a really good start for us here." The Brown Team pulled to within 14-7 on a 71-yard pass from Brett Ratliff to David Patten in the third quarter. Those two connected again later in the third on a 46-yarder over the middle that made it first and goal at the 6. Ratliff threw two incompletions and gave way to Derek Anderson to start the fourth quarter. On third and goal Anderson tucked the ball in after not finding an open receiver and then dove over the goal line for the tying score. Eric Barton argued that he'd touched Anderson down, and the lead official even conducted a fake replay review. "Of course I was in," Anderson joked afterwards. "I think I would have been in. I might have taken a hit, but I'd be in." The White Team scored on its first play from scrimmage of the day, a 51-yard touchdown pass off a play-action pass from Quinn to Leggett, who got free running a fly route. Quinn rolled to his right and threw a beautiful, high-arching ball to Leggett, who spent last season on the Browns' practice squad. "You always like to start a game that way," Mangini said. The scrimmage was played under game-like conditions with 10-minute quarters and NFL officials calling the action. No official stats were kept. The Brown Team needed a couple drives to get its offense going. It did late in the first quarter as Anderson threw a third-down bullet to Robert Royal, completed back-to-back passes to Mohammed Massaquoi to get past the 50 for the first time, then got inside the 15 on a throw over the middle to Braylon Edwards. On the next play Anderson was picked off at the goal line by D'Qwell Jackson, who returned the interception near midfield. It stayed 7-0 through the middle of the third quarter, when Noah Herron got loose on a run up the middle and turned it into a 39-yard touchdown. Quinn got the final drive going for the White Team with a pair of completions to Joshua Cribbs, but the White Team couldn't get a big play and had to settle for a long field goal try. NOTES: Sitting out the scrimmage were Steve Heiden, Syndric Steptoe, John Madsen, Charles Ali and Rex Hadnot...The White team wore brown pants with its white jerseys...With temperatures hovering around 90 degrees for the first time this camp, Mangini said the heat was "a good reminder" that you never know what the weather will have in store and how it may affect game conditions...Dave Zastudil uncorked a beautiful punt late in the first half that landed just outside the 1-yard line, spun back a yard and was saved from going in the endzone by a hustling Blake Costanzo of the Brown Team...The players signed autographs for nearly 30 minutes after the scrimmage. Dan in Florida
Here's some RAPID REPORTS that came in since I stopped checking (about the Scrimmage): 5:27:04 pm The long TD from QB Brady Quinn to WR Lance Leggett highlighted the day's activities. "Lance is a truly fast guy," Quinn said. "We thought if we ran play-action we could pull up the safey and get behind the coverage. That's what we did." 5:25:43 pm The most encouraging performance in today's Brown and White scrimmage was that of WR Josh Cribbs. Cribbs worked often in the slot and caught everything thrown his way. 5:24:50 pm Browns WR Braylon Edwards led the NFL in drops in 2008. He credits hanging on to the ball so far in camp to a relaxed mindset. "I'm just having fun," he said. "Everything is just coming naturally. That's the way football is supposed to be." 5:23:36 pm Browns QB Derek Anderson said the large number of short and medium-range passes today was the result of yesterday's practice in which the White defense was burned by WR Braylon Edwards. 5:22:26 pm WR Lance Leggett started the scrimmage with a bang, hauling in a 51-yard TD pass from Browns QB Brady Quinn. "It was a good read by Brady and I just ran the route the way I was supposed to," he said. 5:21:16 pm Rookie C Alex Mack had the unenviable task of trying to block Shaun Rogers in today's Brown and White scrimmage. And Rogers wasn't taking it easy on him. "I still have to do my job," Rogers said. "I'm being evaluated and graded and still have to perform to a certain level of expectation." 5:20:10 pm Browns NT Shaun Rogers joked about his "touch sack" of Derek Anderson, after which the QB received a penalty. "Derek was already sacked," Rogers said, smiling. "He tried to say it was an incomplete pass, but that was null and void." 3:16:48 pm Final score of today's scrimmage: Brown 17, White 14. 3:16:23 pm Browns PK Phil Dawson lined up to attempt a game-tying field goal with 27 seconds remaining in today's scrimmage when a timeout was called to freeze him. Anything to duplicate a game situation. Dawson then kicked it wide. 3:15:23 pm The Brown team overcame a 14-0 deficit to take a 17-14 lead on a short field goal by Phil Dawson. Dawson has been the team's starting kicker since it returned to Cleveland in 1999. That should continue in 2009 - he's the only placekicker in camp.
